'He's not charged and there's no proof': Jill Scott defends Bill Cosby and accuses the media/society of 'attempting to destroy his magnificent legacy'

The singer has come in for flak from her fans after repeatedly tweeting her support for Bill Cosby over the past week
Earlier this year the Philadelphia-born singer received an honorary doctorate from Temple University and was photographed receiving it from Cosby
'So they've proven the alleged allegations? I didn't know. Will they also be giving him back the millions he's donated?' she tweeted
On Monday she accused the media and society of attempting to destroy the comedian's 'magnificent legacy'

Risky business... I understand the celebrities who'd rather say nothing. Whoever you side with there's a risk you could be wrong and a certainty that some people won't be happy. And if he should turn out to be a serial rapist as alleged, how many of us would like to be remembered as defenders of a serial rapist?

Celebrities, you have the right to remain silent when something happens to another celebrity.

'It’s hearsay in a court of law. Tis all. Trust. If this is true, he’ll face his due just like everyone,' she said in one tweet.

'For a world traveled, educated, woman AND mother to take up for a man who has abused women in his past is disheartening,' hit back one person

Scott then posted another tweet saying, 'I’m respecting a man who has done more for the image of Brown people that almost anyone EVER. From Fat Albert to the Huxtables.'

I'm not a lawyer but I don't think it would be hearsay in a court of law...? Isn't it testimony if the alleged victim says what happened to her? If I say I heard the alleged victim say Bill Cosby raped her that's hearsay and wouldn't be admitted evidence in court (if used as evidence that Bill Cosby raped her and not evidence of something else like state of mind or when the claims first surfaced or something). But the women who were there are witnesses to the events that took place (allegedly) and could provide testimony under oath if this ever goes to court (and it looks like it might now that he's been sued unless it's thrown out because of statute of limitations?).

The problem that Jill, like so many others, is overlooking is that there is proof.

Not physical proof like DNA.

But evidence that would be admitted in court as proof.

ETA: And no, a victim's direct testimony is not hearsay.

So Jill Scott seems to think this is some vast media conspiracy? That all the publishers & editors of all the news outlets in the English speaking world simultaneously woke up one day and said "I'm going to destroy Bill Cosby today"?

riiiiiiiiiiiiiight

Because we all want to preserve the legacy of a serial rapist. (if he is one) :-P

Scott then posted another tweet saying, 'I’m respecting a man who has done more for the image of Brown people that almost anyone EVER. From Fat Albert to the Huxtables.'

Yeah. But perhaps his contributions to the image of Brown people stopped being positive when he got accused of being a serial rapist. Just maybe.

In his resignation statement Monday, Cosby declared, “I have always been proud of my association with Temple University.” But Temple University can no longer be proud of Bill Cosby. In retrospect, it’s deeply unfortunate the college didn’t end its relationship with him back in 2006, that it chose to continue to promote him as its institutional face long after he’d reportedly sexually assaulted one of its own. But now, if Temple needs a new image, let it be proud of Andrea Constand, because her brave choice to come forward nearly a decade ago set in motion the revelations that are continuing today. And from now on when I tell people I went to Temple, I’m going to tell them it’s the place where Bill Cosby’s good guy façade first began to unravel.

Bill Cosby thanks defenders Whoopi Goldberg and Jill Scott on Twitter

“I don’t know if there’s any excuse other than lazy journalism,” rock reporter Jim DeRogatis tells National Review Online. “When something is public record, especially in terms of lawsuits where accusations are laid out, reporters can report on that. They have a responsibility to report on it.” DeRogatis has spent many years reporting on sexual assault charges against R. Kelly, a singer whose career continues to flourish despite multiple accusations of statutory rape and other offenses, some of them backed up by video evidence. DeRogatis contrasts the supine behavior of U.S. media with the recent flap over former CBC personality Jian Ghomeshi, who has been accused by multiple women of violent abuse involving a stuffed animal nicknamed “Big Ears Teddy.”
http://www.nationalreview.com/article/393521/wall-women-tim-cavanaugh

DeRogatis struggles to explain the particular timing of the Cosby blowup. “The thing with the Cosby story is that it’s so at odds with the public image he has projected,” he says. “And the charges against Woody Allen are also at odds with the image Woody Allen projects, unless you watch Manhattan. If you watch Manhattan [in which Allen's character falls in love with a very young Mariel Hemingway] you say ‘Oh, yeah!’ But the charges against R. Kelly are not at all at odds with the image he projected. And then again, look at Michael Jackson: To this day, there are people who just don’t want to believe.”

http://edition.cnn.com/2014/12/02/showbiz/bill-cosby-allegations/

In the video Barbara Bowman, Jewel Allison and Victoria Valentino meet and Jewel Allison says the same thing happened to one of her friends who hasn't come forward yet. Who knows how many are out there.
"For years, I thought that I was the only one," said Allison, who claims Cosby sexually assaulted her in the late 1980s, when she was a model and aspiring actress. "I kept this as a secret ... afraid no one is going to believe you, afraid society is going to victimize you."

Allison said that, because she's African-American, she was especially reluctant to speak out, as Cosby has long been revered in that community. About a decade ago, Allison said, a friend alleged to her that Cosby had done something similar to her, but Allison urged her "to keep quiet."

"And I feel guilty, I feel horrible," Allison said. "You're raised to, 'Shhh, don't talk.'"

Now is different, though. Meeting face-to-face with Bowman and Valentino is part of her "healing process," she said.

"It wasn't about him, it was about what was best for me," added Allison. "...When you tell the truth, it really does set you free. I never understood what that meant until now."

I'm surprised that Whoopi has chosen to defend Cosby. She was roundly criticized for describing the sodomization of a 13 year old girl by Roman Polanski as 'not rape-rape.'

  • #1,010
Goldberg suggested those who feared they would not be believed if they came forward decades ago should have demanded rape tests to prove they had been assaulted by the comedian.

She said, "Perhaps the police might have believed it or the hospital. Don't you do a kit when you say someone has raped you?"

http://www.torontosun.com/2014/11/21/bill-cosby-accuser-fuming-at-whoopi-goldberg

I'm thinking Whoopi doesn't know that rape kits as we know them didn't exist in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s...

I do. The one on the news this morning said, He offered her pills and told her to take them and she did. Also that she continued seeing him after that.
I think that slowly there will be something about each of them that makes this make more sense. Why isn't Gloria Allred all over the news championing them. I am telling you at this point something still does not feel right. Not to me.

Well here she is now as requested:
Attorney Gloria Allred has called a news conference Wednesday with three women who allege they were sexually assaulted by comedian Bill Cosby, including two women Allred said had never spoken to the media about their claims.

Allred did not provide details about the allegations in an announcement of the 12:30 p.m. news conference but said one of the accusers was mentioned anonymously in a 2005 lawsuit filed against the comedian.

The attorney said she would discuss what she believed would be the best way for all the women "to obtain justice in this matter.”

And here's Judy Huth's court document
http://documents.latimes.com/judy-huth-lawsuit-against-bill-cosby/

Elizabeth Kase, a partner at New York's Abrams Fensterman who specializes in criminal law, views the civil suit as a positive for Cosby.

"Now they're in court. Now there's process. Now there are rules of evidence and a Constitution. There's something he can respond with — and to — that has rules and function of law. It takes it out of this crazy world of the Internet, where it is lawless," she says.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/...lawsuit-legal-troubles-sexual-abuse/19822963/

"Forty years (since the alleged molestation) is a pretty long time," Bloom says, though she's prevailed in cases involving 15 or 20 years. But she says this is Huth's only legal option left if she wants to pursue Cosby now.

"He has two defenses: I didn't do it, or even if I did, she knew well before three years ago of the (alleged) injuries," Bloom says. "It's not an appealing legal position to be in (for Cosby). His attorney has said that the people accusing him have not filed legal claims, as if that undermines their credibility. Now somebody has sued. It will be interesting to see his response."
"Unless it's thrown out at an early stage, he'll have to submit to depositions and be sworn in and testify under oath," says Jerry Reisman, a partner at Reisman, Peirez, Reisman and Capobianco law firm in Garden City, N.Y.

Cosby, says Kase, "can testify. And usually civil defendants do testify. If they don't give their side of the story, then it's only her word and that's enough for a preponderance of proof."

Thank you Donjeta. Count me as thankful that there will be legal proceedings, and even better that Gloria Allred is their Counsel. BC has had his "people" for how long? I'm just saying....

It's only in the interest of justice that the victims have a veteran, high powered attorney, because I'm certain this process (just as the allegations themselves) will be not be pretty. :cow: :moo:

TMZ.com is covering the press conference live.

For the record:

I never liked Bill Cosby, my kids did watch his show.

I never, ever bought Jello because Bill Cosby was the spokesman. I needed the Jello, period.

I canot respect a man who hides behind silence and a bunch of high priced lawyers.

http://www.tmz.com/2014/12/03/gloria-allred-bill-cosby-sexual-assault-accusers/

there's Jane Doe 5 (Beth Ferrier?) right now crying talking about how she passed a lie detector test on the request of National Enquirer and they published Cosby interview instead, and the harassment she received afterwards

Now another woman, I didn't catch her name, saying she met Cosby in 1973 in a celebrity tennis tournament and he followed them to restaurants and groped her.

Third woman was another aspiring model and Cosby gave her a pill for a cold and asked her to wet her hair to see its texture and touched her nipple, humped on her leg and then she passed out and woke up to him clapping his hands. He gave her some money.

Allred challenges Bill Cosby to waiver the statute of limitations for six months. She says it's possible because it's an affirmative defense and people have done it for whatever reason.

She says there are many women who have not come forward but contacted her.

http://www.tmz.com/2014/12/03/gloria-allred-bill-cosby-sexual-assault-accusers/
Gloria Allred -- who reps some of the women accusing Bill Cosby of rape -- says she knows the statute of limitations has run out but she issued a challenge ... do "what's right" and fight it out in court, or ante up $100 million for an informal hearing where the women can prove he damaged them.

The famed attorney says what's in it for Cosby is that he can clear his name if he's telling the truth.

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainmen...-cosby-sex-abuse-scheduled-to-speak-at-press/

Three women who claim they were victimized by Bill Cosby appeared alongside attorney Gloria Allred at a Wednesday afternoon press conference. They were just a few of the many who Allred said have contacted her.

“I have literally lost count” of the number of women, Allred said.

http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/thr...-come-forward-at-press-conference-1201370142/

“His behavior was like that of a predator,” said the second accuser, Northern California resident Helen Hayes, describing how Cosby followed her and her friends around in 1973 and grabbed her breast.

The third, Chelan, was 17 years old at the time she met Cosby in 1986. He gave her a blue pill in a hotel room, she said, and she passed out while he was lying on a bed with her, giving her $1,500 after she woke up. Allred said that at this point they would not comment as to whether Chelan, a California resident, has already brought her case to law enforcement or whether she plans to go to law enforcement with the charges.

Cosby concerts in suburban NY cancelled

Associated Press 58 minutes ago

Cosby had two sold-out engagements in Tarrytown on Saturday. Late last week, the promoter said people who didn't want to attend could get refunds, and nearly half of the audience had reportedly requested one.

I apologize if this was already posted, but I don't remember seeing it:

Call for boycotting a Bill Cosby show in Canada
Associated Press By ROB GILLIES December 2, 2014 5:18 PM

TORONTO (AP) — Bill Cosby's three shows in Canada in January are still on the calendar, but there is a call to boycott his performance in London, Ontario.

"To have him appear in public is inconsistent with the values of London," said Megan Walker, executive director of the London Abused Women's Centre, who issued the call following renewed accusations that the comedian drugged and sexually assaulted more than a dozen women over several decades.

I never set up lack of physical response as a "test of rape". I simply gave a plausible explanation for how someone who has been drugged unconscious and raped (thereby presumably lacking an arousal state) could still know a rape took place in the absence of a memory confirming such.

Then that's what you should have written, but it was not. And since some women (and men) experience a lack of lubricant even during arousal, dryness doesn't really prove anything either.

The reason we know some of Cosby's victims were raped is because they woke up with SEMEN between their legs. That is not something that can occur without close contact with a man. So either they are lying or they were raped.

What you say is true, but the fact remains that a women would not wake up the next day and have no clue sex had occurred.

I am not a girl or a woman or even heterosexual, so my knowledge of women on "the morning after" is admittedly limited. But I believe some women have indeed turned up pregnant, say, or infected with VD while claiming they have no awareness of having had intercourse. Perhaps some are lying, but I doubt all are.
