Renee Danielle Welka was 22 years old, a student at Eastern Michigan University about to start her senior year. She was studying Marketing. She pulled her white Ford Escort into the parking lot of the apartment complex where she lived. Her friend was in the passenger seat. A man stepped up to the car and shot her in the back. Renee drove the car away, trying to leave the complex when she passed out. She was rushed to St Joe's Mercy, but did not make it.
Her friend identified a bystander at the apartment complex as the person who shot her. He was arrested and charged, but the judge threw out the case for lack of evidence. Her case remains open and unsolved.
Tragically, after her child's murder, Renee's mother struggled with mental health issues and her home was featured on the TV show "Hoarders" Her father passed away in 2013.
