Reports of multiple people stabbed in a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan. July 26th 2025

Watching many YouTubers reporting on the event, trying to pronounce Petoskey, Cheboygan and even Traverse City. Michigan has some unusual city names.

"Bradford James Gille is in custody and awaiting arraignment on one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder following the shocking stabbing spree in Traverse City, cops said....

Gille is from Afton, Mich, and was last listed as living in Cheboygan, about 80 miles northeast of Traverse City.

He has multiple past arrests for criminal mischief and drug offenses and previously served 49 days in jail in Florida in 2014 for vandalism."

Sheriff wants to charge the perp with terrorism, which IIRC, requires the element of ideology?

"The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office is requesting Bradford Gille, 42 of Afton Michigan, be charged with terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder after a stabbing at the Traverse City Walmart Saturday.

Sheriff Mike Shea at a Sunday press conference said Gille has a history of assaultive incidents and controlled substance violations. Shea described the weapon as a 3.5 inch folding knife."

ETA: Looks like in Michigan, ideology is not required for terrorism. I posted the legal definition for Michigan below.

Might as well look up the LEGAL definition of "terrorism" in the state of Michigan, bbm

THE MICHIGAN PENAL CODE (EXCERPT)
Act 328 of 1931

750.543b Definitions.

Sec. 543b.

As used in this chapter:
(a) "Act of terrorism" means a willful and deliberate act that is all of the following:
(i) An act that would be a violent felony under the laws of this state, whether or not committed in this state.
(ii) An act that the person knows or has reason to know is dangerous to human life.
(iii) An act that is intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population or influence or affect the conduct of government or a unit of government through intimidation or coercion.'

edited to focus just on the definition of act of terrorism. There is more at the link.

Anyone good at looking up court records? The perp served time in Florida in 2014 for vandalism. I'm wondering what he vandalized.

Thanks for the link. (But minor correction - the dates aren't "mine." I claim no connection, lol!)

Great find! as per the listing description…
The perp is a self-published author. He uses his full name, and in the description of one of his books, he provides his birthdate, which matches the perp. The books seem to be about his religious life.

Book overview

The Book of I Jesus Christ is Bradford James Gille’s account as he unveils a life shaped by enigmatic encounters, spiritual revelations, and startling connections to historical figures. From the depths of ancient history to the heart of modern-day America, follow Bradford's odyssey as he discovers haunting echoes of his past lives, intertwined with the essence of biblical narratives and the crucible of World War Two.

A chance encounter in a church sets the stage for an inexplicable bond with a spirit believed to be Jesus Christ, leading Bradford through a mesmerizing labyrinth of dreams and visions that traverse millennia. As he grapples with the astonishing revelation of his own identity as Jesus Christ and the spirit as Judas Iscariot, Bradford's journey unfolds with awe-inspiring clarity, blurring the lines between the earthly realm and the spiritual dimension.

The Book of I Jesus is a compelling exploration that transcends time, offering glimpses into past lives, unveiling mystical truths, and raising poignant questions about the nature of faith, destiny, and the infinite connections that bind us across the ages.

There was "citizen involvement."

I think that means someone in the store got the suspect? idk.

from presser
Most likely, multiple people tackled him.

I wonder if the knife was acquired at the store, or purchased elsewhere.

Prayers for all involved. My elderly parent lives there and is thankfully home safe. I love that town. Nowhere is immune. 😢
I have a Facebook friend (she used to live here, and I knew her through her business) and Chasten and Pete Buttigieg live there with their kids.

UpNorth Live News- Grand Traverse County Update
Update this morning description of event
It looks like citizens stopped him and kept him in the parking lot for law enforcement
Someone had a gun

IMO

I’ve seen the video of the guy being confronted in the parking lot.
He appears very unkempt and his clothes look filthy and he seems kinda out of it.
Just from those observations and the initial statements saying police “thought” he was from Michigan makes me think he’s a homeless man with mental health issues.
Just my thoughts. Could be entirely wrong.
That could explain why he (thankfully!) didn't have a gun

Sheriff’s deputies in Emmet County, Michigan, were searching for Gille on Friday evening and Saturday morning after receiving a court order instructing deputies to take him into custody. The details of the court order are unclear.

Deputies could not locate Gille, who is homeless with no known physical address in Emmet County, according to the order.

"Regrettably, less than 24 hours after receiving this order, a tragic series of events occurred in Traverse City," the sheriff’s office said in a Monday Facebook post.

A northern Michigan man accused of stabbing 11 people Saturday at a Walmart near Traverse City was previously accused of digging up a grave in a Petoskey cemetery and trying to remove the casket, court records show.

The criminal case against Bradford Gille offers a fuller picture of the mental health issues ― including a history of talking about killing people ― and legal problems of a man accused of going on a rampage at Walmart and stabbing random people.

Gille also had run-ins with Mackinaw City police at least twice this year, including a call earlier this month about him with a knife outside a local grocery store. Police said they didn't arrest him because he didn't pose a threat to anyone...

I suspect mental health issues are at play in this case. BG's attorney will likely request psych eval.

Very interesting about the cemetery. He did believe in past lives, as evidenced in his self-published book descriptions on amazon (linked upthread), so perhaps he was on a mission in his muddled mind regarding that?

I agree he sounds very delusional and needs to be off the streets. Thankful no one was killed at his hands.
