CO - Three dead in Walmart shooting, Thornton, 1 Nov 2017

Also from the heavy:

Police in Thornton, Colorado had previously released photos of the 47-year-old man, who worked as a sheet metal fabricator and was under great financial stress in recent years, according to 2015 bankruptcy records obtained by Heavy (you can read them below).

If this stemmed from his bankruptcy, I'm guessing he was an injustice collector. He held innocent people responsible for his financial and personal struggles instead of accepting personal responsibility. JMO

"Injustice Collector" is on my list of Websleuths Drinking Game phrases lol.

MOO, of course. This man lost his job in 2015 (at 45 yrs of age), numerous arrests for mostly minor infractions, etc. Did he choose this route to avoid becoming homeless? This route guarantees him a roof over his heard, 3 meals a day, free medical and dental, access to libraries and gymnasiums, never having to lift his finger to do an ounce of work for the rest of his life. In this country, nine times out of ten, it would seem (IMHO), that we don't punish, we incarcerate. To some, that's more viable than being homeless, etc.

All he has to do is confess, there is no trial and he gets a life sentence (no worries anymore, even though he handed out a death sentence to so many). We have thousands upon thousands like him in our prison system who should have gotten the death penalty, but instead, they are living a life they chose, no worries, no cares and the hard working American people pick up the tab.

All this is MOO, but unless we start enforcing death penalty laws, these criminals have absolutely no fear. This coward didn't even attempt to take his own life. These type of criminals, IMHO, have no fear of killing others, but they are petrified of dying themselves. The Fort Hood shooter comes to mind and many others. There are probably many others who will follow in their footsteps because incarceration is not punishment. The death penalty brings them face to face with their own mortality, something they truly fear, IMO. This punishment should come about swiftly as well. They shouldn't linger on death row until they die of old age.

MOO

The death penalty has been shown over and over not to serve as a deterrent to crime. People may support it for other reasons, like revenge, but it's never acted as a deterrent.

I'm not sure how to word this in a way that won't be taken wrong but I'll try. I've had small businesses before and we always had the largest sales on the first of the month. I personally grocery shop once a week but if my normal shopping day falls on the first, I will go earlier to avoid the crowds, long lines and close to empty shelves. I am in no way putting down those who are receiving public assistance but some people who are working and struggling financially resent those on public assistance. IMO if this was motivated by his financial distress then I think the fact that he carried out this shooting on the first of the month could be significant.

The death penalty was not put into place to serve as a deterrent. Its a punishisment handed down for a crime commited.
Just like getting life in prison. Life would not be considered revenge.
Either can serve as a deterrent.
Being for or against the death penalty is a seperate issue.

The poster specifically said s/he wanted it as a deterrent. Hence my response.

Will there be a teleconference? I would like to know motive for this senselessness.

I wonder if this is a hate crime. I notice all the victims' last names are Hispanic/Latinx. One of the men was from my hometown. So senseless. I hope the hate crime/terrorism angle is investigated. I'm not buying the "apparently random" line.

Just came in to check if the "he has to be mentally ill" comment has been made yet... yup.

IDK about mentally ill but he sure dropped a lot of weight since his previous mugshot in this article. BTW I'm not defending his actions or making excuses but I couldn't help but wonder the reason for his weight loss.

I noticed that, too, and wondered the same. But, looking at the victims' pictures, I don't think anyone would look at them and decide they were Hispanic. The statistics at the following website show that in 2012 29% of Thornton's population was Hispanic/Latino, so I'm thinking now that is just a coincidence.

Rest gently, Victor, Carlos, and Pam !!! :(
My condolences to their hurting loved ones... especially the children. What an unbearable loss !!!

I have been into that Walmart at least 10 times in the last 2 years and I would say at least 60 to 80% of the Shoppers there are Hispanic. It does not surprise me if he shot randomly that all three would be Hispanic. Also he was not unemployed his boss said he walked out of work without as much as a single word yesterday morning see attached article. http://www.9news.com/mobile/article...morning-without-a-word-boss-says/73-488579432

Suspected Thornton Walmart shooter ordered held without*bond
http://kdvr.com/2017/11/03/suspected-thornton-walmart-shooter-ordered-held-without-bond/

"BRIGHTON, Colo. -- The man accused of opening*fire inside a Thornton Walmart*that left three people dead made his first court appearance on Friday morning and was ordered to be held without bond.

Scott Ostrem, 47, is facing three counts of first-degree murder for the shooting on Wednesday night. He appeared in front of Adams County District Court Judge Ted Tow at the Adams County Courthouse."

O/T, was the (alive) Asian woman in Thornton who speaks an "unidentified language" ever identified?

"Ostrem's public defender Emily Fleischmann said Walmart has not allowed her into the store and asked that the Thornton Police Department reseize the crime scene so those representing Ostrem can have an "independent evaluation."

Tow denied the request, saying he didn't have the authority to grant such an order.

The store remained closed Friday after the shooting, but police have relinquished their control back to Walmart."
