Here we have day and time differences slowed even further down by ships bringing in the bodies at a rate of 7 hour trips per article below. Reporting on how many have been found is a fruitless attempt, unless it's all 162. Same with MH17's missing & MH370's entire passenger list still missing. smh (I'm linking Yahoo News? oy)

AirAsia QZ8501: Grieving families return to Surabaya hotel to find luggage removed from room

Some families of passengers of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 were surprised on Wednesday when they returned to their rooms at Hotel Halogen and found their luggage outside, reported Indonesia news portal Detik.com.

The hotel, which is near Juanda International Airport, had reportedly removed the luggage because the rooms were booked for the new year.

A Halogen Hotel receptionist said the decision to remove the luggage from the rooms was approved by AirAsia, and that AirAsia staff helped to move some of the items.

Oh, wasn't that kind of them.

Will AirAsia have to pay any wrongful death claims?

Strong waves had shifted bodies further east and they could be drifting towards the Kalimantan shores, of Borneo.

Indonesian Air Vice-Marshall Sunarbowo Sandi, mission co-ordinator of the search and rescue operations said Indonesian police and Armed Forces (TNI) ships had been deployed to wait by the coastline, the Straits Times reports.

AirAsia flight QZ8501: S'pore ship to look for flight recorder on first day of 2015

Published on Dec 31, 2014 7:31 PM

ON BOARD THE MV SWIFT RESCUE - The MV Swift Rescue - a search- and-support ship which has been deployed by Singapore to look for Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ8501's flight recorder - is expected to reach the crash site at 2pm on Thursday, after almost two days of sailing.

Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Chow Khim Chong, who is in charge of the underwater search operation, said: "By finding the black box, we can unravel the mystery behind the plane's crash."

The black box records conversations in the cockpit and preserves data on the aircraft's position and speed. It is fitted with an underwater locator beacon that transmits for 30 days to guide search teams.

The task will be a challenging one as the exact location of the box is not known, though information collated by Indonesian authorities has provided an educated estimate, said Senior Lt-Col Chow.

He added: "The area we are tasked to search has a higher chance of success."

Will AirAsia have to pay any wrongful death claims?

The articles below highlight some issues in depth. I hope the families get more than $8300 which would be an insult.

"Indonesia, unlike its neighbors Malaysia or Singapore, hasn’t signed the Montreal Convention, an international treaty that offers payments from airlines covering total liability of around $170,000 a passenger and covers advance payments for accommodation and transport costs for the families of victims after an air crash. Carriers based in countries that have signed the 2003 treaty are liable for the compensation, which is separate from personal insurance contracts.

Indonesia observes an older aviation agreement—the Warsaw Convention of 1929—which has a substantially lower liability limit per victim of around $8,300 according to one expert’s estimates, and doesn’t require advance payments for passenger’s families."

http://www.wsj.com/articles/airasia-disaster-puts-spotlight-on-insurance-treaty-1419943788

"Like in any plane crash, the tragedy over AirAsia Flight 8501 now leads to the horrific task of determining how to compensate the families of the victims.

International treaties play a role. Families can also pursue potentially larger claims through the courts. And where victims file lawsuits can play a significant role in determining compensation.

AirAsia Flight 8501, which left Indonesia for Singapore with 162 people on board, disappeared Sunday for reasons that have yet to be determined. Debris from the plane was found in the waters off Indonesia on Tuesday, and rescue officials have started recovering bodies.

The compensation process tends to be long. In the case of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which went missing in March, families have received some initial payments but final amounts have yet to be settled."

I hope they get to the wreck soon. It sounds as though many people could still be inside, perhaps still belted into their seats. :(

That's exactly what happened to me when I posted a kazillion 'same' posts yesterday. Then I went out for a few hours, so by the time I got back the thread was closed and I couldn't delete. :sigh:

(and, no, I didn't drive CARIIS. They are really strict here, and there were police random breath-testing stations set up all over the place last night.)

It boils down to someone in 1A could get 12 million, while the passenger in 2A could max out 15747

After main deal all this stuff comes into the receipes. claims can then be made in any one of five places: the primary residence of the plaintiff, the destination of the flight, where the ticket was bought, where the carrier is domiciled or its main place of business.

The nationality of each passenger will make a staggering difference to the compensation

Public liability lawyers say the biggest disparity will be the difference between the payouts offered to the relatives of western passengers, compared to those from Asian countries.

American aviation crash attorney Floyd Wisner said passengers and crew from China, Malaysia and Indonesia would fare worse in their claims due to what they are calling a limited view of damages.

'They could evaluate these cases and say a Chinese life is (of) less value than an American life.

Under the multilateral Montreal Convention, relatives of air crash victims from signatory countries are entitled to about $US176,000 in damages without having to prove fault.

Ms Rolfe estimated an American court would pay compensation of between $8-10 million per passenger, while Chinese relatives would likely receive less than $1 million per passenger.

MAL 370:
The lawyer said the airline could pay between $500-750 million in damages to relatives it was probable it had liability insurance of about $1 billion.

It has been reported that $US110 million has been placed in an escrow account and the insurance company settled to make hardship payments to the families of those lost.
Malaysia Airlines said it will not consider compensation payouts until what happened aboard the flight is determined, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

AN AIr FRance one NOT 447

Within one week of the crash, cash payments ranging from C$1,000 to C$3,700 (all figures in this article in Canadian dollars unless otherwise stated) were given to passengers for interim emergency use. These funds were given to passengers through an emergency centre set up in the Novotel Hotel in Mississauga, near the airport. These payments were independent of the claims process, which has been started for passengers who have not retained counsel. It is expected that the insurers of Air France will pay for all damages as well as extra compensation for having passengers go through the ordeal; however, only amounts of €6,000 to €9,000 have been offered, prompting passengers to turn to the lawsuit to seek legal action. The insurance is handled by the Societé de Gestion & D'Expertises D'Assurances in France. All passengers have also been offered a free round-trip ticket to any Air France destination in the world in the same fare class in which they were originally booked on AF358.
After a lawsuit lasting four and a half years, Air France settled the compensation lawsuit with 184 of the 297 passengers (no crew members included) aboard Flight 358. The compensation is for a total of $12 million. Air France will pay $10 million, and have been released from passengers claim's stemming from the incident, according to the judgement's summary. Airbus and Goodrich, the company that made the emergency evacuation system on the plane will pay $1.65 million and claims against them in a lawsuit have been released.[SUP][35][/SUP]
J.J. Camp, a Vancouver lawyer representing claimants, says passengers seriously harmed with either physical or psychological injuries will be eligible for the maximum payout of $175,000. Passengers who weren't seriously harmed in the crash will receive the minimum payment of between $5,000 and $10,000.[SUP][35]

I found the comments as to paint thickness as an attraction for lightning very interesting--unsure of accuracy of paint vs lightning. So the blackness of the maps just indicates temperature and NOT storm as previously thought. Thank you!

Better weather allows AirAsia search to resume

The break in weather today — blue skies and calm seas despite earlier storm predictions — could aid recovery efforts, and Vice Air Marshal Sunarbowo Sandi, search and rescue coordinator in Pangkalan Bun on Borneo island, the closest town to the targeted area, said he was hopeful divers would be able to explore the wreckage site.

“It’s possible the bodies are in the fuselage,” he said, “so it’s a race now against time and weather.”

Also this...

Two more bodies have been recovered, bringing the total to nine of the 162 people who were on the flight when it vanished Sunday (Dec 28) half way through a two-hour flight from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore.

Sonar images identified what appeared to be large parts of the plane, but strong currents were moving the debris.

Choppy conditions had prevented divers from entering the water yesterday, and helicopters were largely grounded. But 18 ships surveyed the narrowed search area.
