'Most Probable Area' of QZ8501 wreckage established, says Malaysia Chief of Navy

Area covering 1,575 square nautical miles will be scoured by three vessels equipped with underwater detection equipment, said Admiral Abdul Aziz Jaafar.

KUALA LUMPUR: In Day 6 of the search for the missing AirAsia flight QZ8501, the search zone has moved 30 nautical miles east from the previous day, while an area covering 1,575 square nautical miles has been established as the “Most Probable Area” where the wreckage will be found, according to the Malaysian Chief of Navy.


“This is the most likely area of the missing plane,” said Admiral Abdul Aziz Jaafar on Twitter on Friday morning (Jan 2).

Soelistyo explains how the tanker filled with fuel will be used to refill SAR’s vessels/ships in the areas where search operation is being conducted. Thus, those vessels don’t have to waste their time and energy by coming back to the coast to refill their fuel.

I'll second that, I can talk about aviation until the cows come home and that's where it stops. I feel like I have learnt sooo much about the law. Court rooms, defence, prosecution sociopaths and the list goes on. I guess we are all here together for justice, regardless of what genre it falls into.

Couldn't agree more. I remember one of the Aircraft Engineers working for Emirates based in Dubai did a short stint at the Melbourne Airport Office when Emirates started up their 777 operation. After several months away from his family he decided to meet up with his family at Comoros Island. I will never forget his recount of the accident. His wife and 3 children were relaxing on the beach when he looked up to see an Ethiopian jet hitting the ocean. This aircraft had been hijacked by 3 Ethiopians and demanded the Capt fly to Australia. This aircraft landed close to the beach, he said his immediate reaction was to wade in over a rocky foreshore to assist survivors. Sorry to be graphic…the water was just bloody and he had gashes over his feet and legs from the rocks. Passengers did survive however he was unable to retrieve anyone. Due to cuts he endured and the high rate of AIDS/HIV in Ethopia he was required to have HIV screening for several months thereafter. Fortunately he was in the clear.

AirAsia flight QZ8501: six more bodies recovered

Surabaya: Six more bodies of victims from AirAsia flight QZ8501 were pulled from the ocean overnight as a team of 50-plus divers hoped that on Friday, finally, they could descend to the crash site.

The newly found bodies bring the total recovered to 14 and, like the eight already recovered and flown to Surabaya for identification, were found in a search site away from the main fuselage of the plane, having floated there on ocean currents.

That's exactly what happened to me when I posted a kazillion 'same' posts yesterday. Then I went out for a few hours, so by the time I got back the thread was closed and I couldn't delete. :sigh:



(and, no, I didn't drive CARIIS. They are really strict here, and there were police random breath-testing stations set up all over the place last night.)

9.37AM: US navy ship USS Sampson is said to have searched in the area where AirAsia QZ8501 lost contact.

9.27AM: Families of passengers on QZ8501 have been asked to leave their hotels due to a "miscommunication", reports Sumisha Naidu. The hotels involved did not inform staff that they had bookings after a certain date and checked out all the families staying there. The families have been booked till Jan 14.

9.13AM: Search equipment sent from Singapore on Thursday is now on board an Indonesian survey ship, which is now out at sea.

9.12AM: The USS Sampson has reportedly found six bodies, and is expected to dock at Pangkalan Bun at 11am. A Malaysian navy ship is also said to have found one body, which will be transferred to an Indonesian navy ship before being flown back to Pangkalan Bun.

10.16AM: A total of 10 bodies have been evacuated, says search agency BASARNAS. Eight of them are already in Surabaya, and two of them are in Pangkalan Bun. More bodies are expected today, says BASARNAS.

10.06AM: AirAsia staff have said that families who have lost multiple loved ones on the flight want to try and bury them together, reports Sumisha Naidu.

Great blog Dr Know ... thanks for the link! They've updated the 10:16 AM report to say 16 people have now been found. And I see that the USS Samspon found 6 of them. A Malaysian ship also found 1 person. Things seem to be moving a little better today, thankfully.

My aviation knowledge amounts to my Dad showing me how aerodynamic lift works by holding the convex side of a tablespoon next to running water from a kitchen tap. The spoon gets sucked into the water. I still can't comprehend why there aren't planes falling out of the sky everywhere. It's like an elephant trying to fly to me.

I can completely understand that. When I'm in the office and an A380 full of fuel and pax labours down the runway and eventually becomes airborne - still doesn't make sense.

11.49AM: Search and rescue officials have taken out the debris from earlier on Friday for re-inspection. They say they are close to finding the wreckage, reports Devianti Faridz.

11.43AM: The two bodies that arrived this morning have been described: 009 is a male adult about 164cm wearing a short sleeve red T-shirt with the words "vintage radio" written on it, while coffin 010 is a female of about 155cm with a ring on her middle finger, wearing blue trousers and a sleeveless white blouse.

10.40AM: Debris found "is a part from the inside of a plane - there is a handle that can be moved", says LTC Jhonson Henrico Simatupang, Commander of the Iskandar Airbase in Pangkalan Bun.

10.29AM: Forensics say they are having trouble identifying one of the victims because fingerprints are inconclusive, as the body had been exposed to sea water for too long, reports John Leong.

I don't think they should describe the victims as they find them. Horrible way to learn about your loved one. Earlier in report I read they height of two that were found. One was female and the other was very small so must have been a child.
