10.45AM: BREAKTHROUGH?
The main wreckage of QZ8501 has been found, says the chief of Indonesia's search and rescue agency BASARNAS.

Speaking in Jakarta, he said two big parts have been found at the bottom of the sea near Pangkalan Bun.
The wreckage is lying at a depth of 30 metres. Oil spills have also been detected in the area.
Search teams are currently deploying remotely operated vehicles to take a closer look at the wreckage before sending divers.
High waves and strong current are still hampering search efforts.

Prayers for the searchers. It sounds like a very difficult and dangerous task. We sure don't want anymore lives lost.

That would be about 33 metres out of a 37 metre plane, if I remember correctly. :twocents:
I'm wondering if the wings came off and it broke right there. So the tail section they found is from the wings back.

from your quote:

"The larger of the objects was around 10 metres by five metres''

Let's hope this information is 'in addition' to the previous information about the 23 metre length object

No kidding. 75' plus 32' would be approximately the correct length of the plane per wiki. (110', iirc)

30 meters down. Honestly, in the grand scheme of things, that not too deep. It's manageable, and hopefully they can bring all the lost back to their families.

My God (speaking to the CNN special on sole survivors) Young Gal hung on to a piece of the aircraft and floated for 9 hrs. Rescued and alive and well today.

I'm watching it right now, I had no idea there were so many sole survivors! And I'm totally not tearing up, I just have something in my eye...

Meanwhile, the Indonesia search team has detected by sonar what is suspected to be the tail of the plane, MetroTV News reported. The piece was picked up by sonar radar at a depth of 29 metres in the waters of the Karimata Strait at 7.34am on Friday, the Indonesian media outlet said.
Colonel Yayan, Commander of Indonesian navy ship Bung Tomo, said the find has yet to be confirmed visually.

The pilot wife makes it sounds like NTSB blamed the pilots. Its not "blame" - however a prudent question is ecactly who IS repsonsible for making sure an aircraft is taking off from the proper place?

They also reported:

3.1 Findings
1. The captain and the first officer were properly certificated and qualified under Federal
regulations. There was no evidence of any medical or behavioral conditions that might
have adversely affected their performance during the accident flight. Before reporting
for the accident flight, the flight crewmembers had rest periods that were longer than
those required by Federal regulations and company policy.

2. The accident airplane was properly certified, equipped, and maintained in accordance
with Federal regulations. The recovered components showed no evidence of any
structural, engine, or system failures.

3. Weather was not a factor in this accident. No restrictions to visibility occurred during
the airplane’s taxi to the runway and the attempted takeoff. The taxi and the attempted
takeoff occurred about 1 hour before sunrise during night visual meteorological
conditions and with no illumination from the moon.

4. The captain and the first officer believed that the airplane was on runway 22 when
they taxied onto runway 26 and initiated the takeoff roll.

5. The flight crew recognized that something was wrong with the takeoff beyond the
point from which the airplane could be stopped on the remaining available runway.

6. Because the accident airplane had taxied onto and taken off from runway 26 without
a clearance to do so, this accident was a runway incursion.

7. Adequate cues existed on the airport surface and available resources were present in
the cockpit to allow the flight crew to successfully navigate from the air carrier ramp
to the runway 22 threshold.

8. The flight crewmembers’ nonpertinent conversation during the taxi, which was not in
compliance with Federal regulations and company policy, likely contributed to their
loss of positional awareness.

9. The flight crewmembers failed to recognize that they were initiating a takeoff on the
wrong runway because they did not cross-check and confirm the airplane’s position
on the runway before takeoff and they were likely influenced by confirmation bias.

10. Even though the flight crewmembers made some errors during their preflight activities
and the taxi to the runway, there was insufficient evidence to determine whether
fatigue affected their performance.

Me either. It's mind boggling. I get loved one's have hope even when realistically it should have run out. Some of these stories really speak to it being a possibility. Slight. Yet still possible in the early hours.

The one thing that struck me the most was the flight the 12-year-old survived, Yemenia flight 626. 152 people were killed and only 25 were identifiable. It does make you think someone could have survived this flight...

At this point those families have got to be running on empty ..... nerves frayed...little will be of consolation to them at this point. MOO

Of course the families should be notified first and always. Sometimes, reporters or others rush to the news when they shouldn't. In this case, I can't see the authority bypassing the relatives. Could have, but Air Asia and rescue need to know who's more important. Finding the victims, determining how they died, finding the black boxes & fuselage. In that order. I'm pretty tired of pictures of rescuers with cameras snapping shots of the victims or leaked rescues of bodies on youtube! Fake or not and the reporting since yesterday about the darn black boxes before mentioning the people missing. It's probably a language difference. rant over...

"I can confirm that this is the big part of the AirAsia plane we have been looking for all this time,” Mr. Soelistyo said, adding that a remotely operated vehicle would be sent to take pictures of the objects, though rough weather is hampering the deployment.

He added that the larger of the two objects appeared to be more than 9 meters long, and the other was more than 7 meters long. The objects were found close together around 11 p.m.*** Friday night in a priority area of the wider search zone, he said. An oil slick was discovered Friday."

http://www.wsj.com/articles/airasia-recovery-mission-speeds-up-1420201656

Further to the upset vis a vis notification of families first of the most recent discovery it appears that it was late Friday night. Given that there is a difficulty in communication from the SAR vessels to the islands, it seems it is a logistical nightmare for communications.

Way smaller than earlier reports.

I think I am officially "lost in translation". Poor Family's. I suppose the lack of communication from rescue vessels to land isn't helping. I do believe they are doing the best they can.

I finished watching Sole Survivor, turned on the news and saw this:

"Kentucky State Police say four people have been killed in a small plane crash and a 7-year-old girl apparently survived and walked away from the wreckage."

More at:

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/police-girl-survived-ky-plane-crash-27973521

Poor little girl, all by herself. I don't think I could have done what she did at that age.

11.55AM: 7 bodies from QZ8501 have arrived at Pangkalan Bun airport. One more is on its way from a Malaysian ship, flown in by a Super Puma helicopter. Channel NewsAsia's Xabryna Kek who is on the scene says there appears to be debris being shifted from the choppers as well.
