ok I will be the sacrificial lamb -- aside from horrid turbulence over the Bering Sea in December to Japan, and aborted takeoff in Europe in the 70's in a 747 .... worst for me was first non smoking flight lasting 6 hours!!!! (I know I am weak)===now I just nod off and go to sleep LOL

I still have my American Airlines wings. Metal with a clasp. 15 and flew by myself from FL to OH. First flight was awful. Two old men hungover from a sales convention hitting on me & the worst storm you could imagine. Nothing as bad as one from Chicago to OH years ago. Food trays flying & bodies flying everywhere. Bad bad storm. I have about 10 scary experiences flying in my lifetime. Small planes too. The Chicago flight was very scary.

O/T, my apologies.

also OT: I didn't want to admit that my airline wings were metal too! I guess I'm not alone :-)

12.04PM: BODY RECOVERED - The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said a body was spotted by personnel onboard the RSS Persistence at 7.58am, and was recovered on board the ship at 8.46am. The body will be handed over to Indonesian authorities, who have been notified.

Reporter Lam Shushan, who is embedded on the RSS Persistence, said the body had been wrapped up by the time reporters were allowed access, and is unclear if the body was male or female.

12.40AM: In a press conference on Sunday, BASARNAS confirmed that another body was recovered and is now on RSS Persistence, This brings the total body count to 31. A fifth big object was also discovered, measuring 9.8 x 1.1 x 0.4 metres, said the BASARNAS chief.

Bad weather is impeding divers though, with dives suspended temporarily. The Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROV) has been despatched to the area. There are 17 Russian divers at search area with unmanned submersibles, the search and rescue agency added.

In terms of assets deployed today, BASARNAS said there were 20 aircraft, 27 ships, including the KRI Usman Harun, deployed. Singapore had contributed two helicopters and four ships to the day's operations.

Remotely operated cameras were being used to try to photograph the objects ....

Dozens of divers from Indonesia and Russia have been deployed to the search area, which has been enlarged to allow for tides sweeping bodies and debris further afield.

Rukman Soleh, the weather bureau chief at the search headquarters in Pangkalan Bun, had earlier said the weather on Sunday and Monday "should provide the search effort with a window of opportunity".

"We'll be concentrating on the underwater search, hopefully we'll be able to evacuate more bodies," he told AFP news agency. "We want to speed up the evacuation of bodies which might be stuck inside the plane's body."

Families of victims have been holding funerals as bodies that have been recovered are flown back to Surabaya.

From what I have been reading -- the poor visibility is really hampering the efforts of the divers.

AirAsia QZ8501: Scant progress, shifting search areas and ill-advised reports cloud recovery

January 4, 2015 by John Walton —Leave a Comment

One week since Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ8501 disappeared from radar over the Java Sea, the recovery and investigation are proceeding slowly. Seasonally high seas and winds up to 56 km/h are continuing to complicate remote submersible and diver operations, while the search areas have been expanded slightly eastward and the Most Probable Area focus for the recovery effort has been enlarged significantly and moved eastwards by over 185km.

Decisions on the search area are made by Indonesian SAR agency BASARNAS, reports Malaysian Chief of Navy Admiral Abdul Aziz Jaafar, whose vessels are involved in the recovery.

Compared with the search map for January 3 (above), the January 4 search area (below) appears to have been extended approximately 50km to the east in sectors II and III, which are also the location of the Most Probable Area search, which has increased by roughly 200 per cent...

This wasn't really a bad flight. Once I was flying from Darwin to Melbourne and before we boarded we were informed we'd be diverting to Brisbane where we would change planes. We were told it had something to with ice. I didn't know anything about planes and icing. I just thought, that's weird. There's no ice in Melbourne in October. For the whole flight to Brisbane we flew at a lower than usual altitude and faster than normal. It was only speaking to my Dad later that he explained they must have meant that the plane had a problem with its de-icing equipment. Glad I didn't know about that while we were actually flying!!

Excellent article thank you! Dr Know!

http://australianaviation.com.au/201...loud-recovery/

"For the DGCA and the wider government of a country where all but four airlines are banned from serving the EU and other states for safety oversight reasons, questions over the competence of its oversight – of airlines, of DGCA, of BMKG, and of the QZ8501 investigation – deserve answers.''

Many excellent points in that article highlighting 'oddities' in this investigation.

excellent commentary regarding ''weather to blame'' from the meteorological service - who ultimately is responsible for supplying accurate information prior to flight for all carriers in that area -- less than confidence inspiring!

such an excellent article and from your link:

"Indonesia and Singapore’s civil aviation authorities are also in disagreement over whether Indonesia AirAsia was authorised to operate a seven-day service between Surabaya and Singapore: Singapore says yes, Indonesia says no.

Whatever the answer, it won’t engender trust in Indonesian aviation governance and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA): if the airline did not have permission, DGCA’s oversight has been incompetent; if the airline did, then DGCA’s actions following its announcement have been both incompetent and unreasonable."

I liked the days in the past when the Captain would do a walk thru and greet the passengers with a nod. You could ask if your child could go up to the cockpit for a minute and it would be granted. I get those days are done and why. I liked the days when you were told look to your right and you will see this. Or we are presently flying over such and such. I just like to hear a human voice who holds my life in his hands. Not that I am afraid but there is just something reassuring, comforting. Best flight I can speak to. West Jet. The Gals dress in Western wear and you get a little song at the end of the flight. They were an absolute hoot.

During the years I have worked in a Duty Airport Manager role, and then F/A. Before 9/11 frequently would ask if we could sit a pax in the jumpseat for taking or landing. Or you might have a budding teenager who dreamt of being a pilot. XMAS time we would seat young children in the J/S and the Capt would tell them that he could see them on his radar. The travelling public would get such a kick out of this. Sadly this all changed. I also remember a pilot who actually made a PA to the cabin instead of to the F/A…pressed the wrong button !!! Hey brownie "can you send the swedish chick with the big 🤬🤬🤬🤬 up to the F/D for take-off !!!! Went through the entire cabin !!!!!

Sudden big drop in altitude about an hour out of Hawaii ... things flew around the cabin, people screamed, the lady next to me left fingernail marks in my arm, flight attendants dropped to brace .. then after a while the capt came on and said "Sorry about that folks". (??!!)

That still scares the ""rap out of me. I don' think it is something you get used to. While you know it's okay it's that immediate adrenalin rush that something could be wrong. Might have been clear air turbulence which comes out of complete nowhere and does not appear on radar.

How intimidating being hit on and also being scared. The general public never cease to amaze me. These days we are not allowed to seat a "young passenger travelling alone YPTA", or minor next to a male.

I'm skerrd of flying so I always have to chat up the pilots in the cockpit before we take off. I ask them to show me pictures of their families (because if they have families they'll be more careful and won't fly the plane all willy nilly!) while surreptitiously sniffing their breath for booze. Oh I'm a sly one!

And they have always been so gracious and kind to me, every last one of them!

Oh newone I could write a book on some of the funnies. Yeah they did laugh - nobody lost their job. Our flights are very quick - you would be surprised as to how many boyfriend/girlfriends would go to the toilet TOGETHER !!!!! I'll contact the F/D ask them to put on the seat belt sign on….they will announce that there is some turbulence in the area … put the nose down for a few seconds…..they can't leave the toilet quicker enough…..the funnies always out weights the nasties. Sorry a bit off topic.

more on the 5th!

''Bambang Soelistyo, the head of Indonesia’s search-and-rescue agency, said on Sunday that sonar imaging revealed a fifth large object in the search area. He said it measured nearly 10 meters"

http://www.wsj.com/articles/search-for-airasia-flight-8501-finds-fifth-large-object-1420355148

divers have not made contact with the ''found pieces of the plane'' diving had to be suspended today

since this is a big piece 10 meters ((33 feet)) sounds like that really have found most of the plane to me at least
