They haven't even found the other parts yet, have they? They're still looking at the tail. Maybe they should try telekinesis! Geez...I wonder what the US Navy would do. I know currents are dangerous. But they're tethered, right? I'm trying to remember how the Koreans got the ferry up. They had horrible conditions...

I don't know what the hell they are doing Boodles. During the Korean search this happened ...

Naval and coastguard vessels have been using floodlights and flares as darkness falls to maintain a search now involving more than 500 divers, 171 vessels and 29 aircraft.

"We carried out underwater searches five times from midnight until early in the morning .... "

The ship sank in about 30m (100ft) of water. (Same depth.)

Cranes are expected to reach the scene on Friday. (The following day.)

Then they used airbags and cranes to lift the ferry.

If there was an American on that flight the USA would have already pushed Indonesia over and done this search themselves.

As mentioned before if this happened in Singapore, we would have a completely different story. Maybe search and rescue have been on WS and decided that making cotton mittens might be easier. I'm sure I could speak for each and every one of us regarding value we place on human and animal life, somewhat different in Indonesia.

bbm: very polite way of putting it......I have other adjectives which I am reluctant to express in case I offend

Another thing that got to me was the way a ship went back to shore on the first Friday so everyone could attend Friday prayers. I understand that their religion is important to them, but what the ..... ? This was in the first week, while there still could have been survivors.

12.23PM: One Indonesian vessel has docked at Kumai Habour to allow the crew to go for Friday prayers. The search will continue later.

I agree and have been thinking this for several days- this is like a baby search compared to others in the past decade or so. It cant be like that is the only part of the planet that has currents in the ocean, there is something messed up.

video of their plan

I did not realize how deep in the sand the tail is - that looks like a major hassle

and then you see ONE dingy, with like 6 guys out on the entire ocean ---we need more manpwoer I think

bbm: yes the flat car ferry/rescue vessel unsuitable for ''choppy'' waters made it back to port for religious observance....when I saw Friday as being arrival time for the offshore tugs was hopeful that perhaps it was a crew who didn't need Friday off MOO

It's dark here so I'm thinking it's daylight over there now. Is it Friday and have the cranes arrived yet?
There doesn't seem to be much news about the crash any more. I liked it much better when CNN bombarded us while continuing to give updates on the search for the plane and rescue of survivors. I do realize there are other important news going on but haven't found another site that is monitoring the situation on the Java Sea.

Indonesian search teams loaded lifting balloons on to helicopters on Friday ahead of an operation to raise the tail section of an AirAsia jet off the sea bed, raising hopes the black boxes can be found to reveal the cause of the disaster.

"For today's operations, we will use helicopters to carry the balloons that will assist in lifting the tail," Lt Col Penerbang Jhonson Hendrico Simatupang told Reuters.

He said the weather was fine on Friday morning.

"But we are expecting sudden changes later in the day," he said. "So we're taking advantage now and moving the balloons as fast as we can."

So, it sounds as though today's plan is to get the balloons to the ship. :sigh:

One offshore tug ...... ((there are many in region -- lots of offshore drilling rigs etc )) would make quick work ((MOO))

am all thumbs trying to embed a photo of some of capabilities of monster tugs and barges but this one is impressive

heavy lifting no problem and semi submersible too -- unafraid of ''choppy seas''

http://www.boa.no/Default.aspx?ID=68 lots of links to tugs

Relatives of the victims have urged authorities to make finding the remains of their loved ones the priority.

Ships with acoustic "pinger locators" designed to pick up signals from the black boxes were at the location but were no longer being used, in a possible sign of confidence among Indonesian officials that the recorders will be found soon.

Forty-four bodies and debris from the plane have been plucked from the surface of the waters off Borneo ...

Sounds as though the other nations are tasked with finding people .. and perhaps debris. I wonder who is tasked with locating the fuselage?

9.56AM: The Royal Malaysian Navy said on Friday that it had handed over the two bodies recovered by its ships to Indonesia's search and rescue agency BASARNAS.

9.55AM: Japanese helicopter crew flew in an additional two bodies to Pangkalan Bun, bringing the total body count to 44, according to reporter Jack Board.

9.50AM: Malaysia's Navy chief Abdul Aziz Jaafar said in a tweet that there were 33 ships deployed in today's search operations.

pings detected: reuters

http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/01/09/us-indonesia-airplane-idUSKBN0KG09L20150109

" Indonesia search and rescue teams hunting for the wreck of an AirAsia passenger jet have detected pings in their efforts to find the black box recorders, Santoso Sayogo, an investigator at the National Transportation Safety Committee, told Reuters on Friday."

editing to add: new bbc too

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-30738613

Thanks so much for the update. Just seen the breaking news on Sky News UK I have had CNN on the last few hours to get info on the situation in France. Thank goodness they have the pings and are closer to finding the black boxes. Hopefully we will find out what happened and see if any appropriate action can be taken for future flights.

Off topic - Hi Tssiemer I hope you don't mind me asking how you got on with the surgeon on Tuesday. Do you need more spinal surgery? I send my best wishes to you in managing the back pain.

"Teams loaded lifting balloons onto helicopters on Friday before an operation to raise the tail section of the jet, although Mr. Sayogo (of the National Transportation Safety Committee) said that the black box was no longer in the tail and divers were confirming its position."

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/09/w...t-pings-at-airasia-flight-8501-site.html?_r=0

Just highlighting this part.

Oh really? Box not in tail anymore. That is first I heard that and wondering how he got that news. It seems the only way to know that would be to know it is somewhere else. So where was it spotted or heard.

Im sorry but I dont have faith in announcements like that without more details on what supported that statement from him. Maybe what he meant to say was the black box pinger was not heard anymore as they listened around the tail. Or something like that.

As we have mentioned before, just hoist the tail up out of the water at this point. They have been spotting the tail and talking about it for many days now. Just get the thing hoisted on board a ship. 2 ways it can be done. 1 with cable wrap and hoist motorized pully system OR 2-with those baloons.

JMO but I think a simple hoist with a cable would do here. Its not like they are trying to hoist up the whole plane where the baloon wraps would be needed. There may be bodies in that tail also and I think it is very important to get that tail up and out of the water even moreso than the box at this point. But I am betting the black box is still in the tail anyway.

yeah....bbc is saying the same thing too regarding actual location of the pings....that pings are not coming from the tail

"We received an update from the field that the pinger locator already detected pings," said Santoso Sayogo, an investigator at the National Transportation Safety Committee.

"We have our fingers crossed it is the black box. Divers need to confirm. Unfortunately it seems it's off from the tail. But the divers need to confirm the position."

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-30738613

but I agree -- let's just haul up the tail asap!

The live blog is saying this.

1.05PM: Chief of Indonesia's search and rescue agency BASARNAS has refuted reports of pings being detected from the black box of QZ8501. He says the agency's pinger locater beacon has not detected any signal.

It also says ... not sure if it means 48 people found now. A lot more floating than originally perceived.

1.12PM: Another two bodies have been recovered, but have yet to be retrieved from vessels at sea, Channel NewsAsia's Jack Board reports.

11.55AM: Five more bodies were flown to Pangkalan Bun from the search site, bringing the total number of bodies recovered to 46.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/live-blog-airasia-flight/1578316.html

ETA: Daily Mail (from Reuters wire) says it is 48 people recovered.

Forty-eight bodies, including at least two still strapped to their seats, have been found in waters off Borneo
