"Indonesian President Joko Widodo has ordered insurance be paid out to the Indonesia AirAsia crash victims' next of kin, regardless of the flight's legal status, The Jakarta Post reported today.

On behalf of Widodo, Indonesian Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan told the daily that the country's regulation stipulates a Rp 1.25 billion (RM349,000) payout for each passenger by the airline.

Indonesia media had earlier reported that Indonesia AirAsia only distributed forms to be filled in by QZ8501 passengers’ next of kin for the initial compensation of Rp 300 million per victim, reported The Jakarta Post."

"The black-box data recorders of AirAsia Flight 8501 probably separated from the plane’s tail upon impact with water, an Indonesian official suggested Friday, as recovery teams worked to prepare that rear section of the wreckage for retrieval from the bottom of the Java Sea.

Based on pings detected Friday morning about a half-mile southwest of the wreckage, the black boxes could be outside remnants of the tail, where they are normally housed, said Suyadi Bambang Supriyadi, director of operations of Indonesia’s search-and-rescue agency. Underwater monitoring equipment detected pings in that area, but divers were unable to locate the black boxes, another official said.

Meanwhile, air-safety experts said the condition of some victims’ bodies suggested the plane didn’t come apart in midair, and may have hit the water at a relatively shallow angle."

warning: slightly difficult for squeamish

re autposies.....they are doing autopsies on foreigners who are less culturally sensitive ... samples will determine whether or not passengers were possibly alive at the time of the crash

http://www.wsj.com/articles/airasia-flight-8501-black-boxes-may-not-be-in-tail-section-1420787692

''Lung samples from the first few autopsies have been sent to an Indonesian laboratory for signs of seawater and plankton following a request from pathologists, said Budiyono, the commander of East Java’s disaster-victims identification service, who goes by only one name.

“If there’s seawater or plankton in their lungs, then we can say that they were still alive when the plane crashed into the sea,” he said.

Pathologists have been able to speed up their investigation after more bodies have been recovered during the past few days.

They are focusing on trying to conduct post mortems on foreigners who don’t have the same cultural sensitivities to the procedures as many Indonesians, Mr. Budiyono said. Indonesian authorities have decided to conduct autopsies on all foreigners recovered from the crash, unless families expressly reject the procedures.''

Hmm .. General Moeldoko is getting very involved. Will this help things to move more quickly and effectively? Are there more than just local faces at the meeting? Anyone recognise any uniforms there?

They don't look like they have a flippin' clue what to do. It's too bad their pride is in the way of seeking outsiders who could actually make progress. Sorry, but that's how I see it. My heart aches for the families whose loved ones are trapped underwater in the plane. I can't imagine their pain.

No the photo doesn't inspire confidence I agree.

This article explains why the Indonesian government maybe reluctant for help from the USA.

"American and Indonesian air-crash investigators share a history of sometimes strained relations stretching back to the late 1990s, which U.S. officials say could impact the current AirAsia probe.

That legacy also may partly explain why the two sides are still discussing potential U.S. participation in the probe of Flight 8501 nearly two weeks after the Airbus A320 with 162 people aboard dropped from radar while flying near storm cells en route to Singapore from Surabaya.

In Washington, a spokeswoman for the National Transportation Safety Board has said officials are waiting for an invitation to join the multinational inquiry, which already includes French industry and government experts. In recent years, the U.S. agency increasingly has been reluctant to commit significant resources, or send investigators to foreign accident scenes, before wreckage or black box recorders are recovered.

By contrast, officials in Jakarta have said the U.S. is welcome to participate, all it has to do is ask, and that they expect the NTSB eventually will join the probe. But they added that is likely to happen only after remnants of the plane, sitting in the silt at the bottom of the Java Sea, are brought to the surface."

I am truly attempting to understand the culture and getting things done.....

While it may seem off topic it's not really. Last night I searched on line to determine if the Indonesian military has a drill team -- that would be evidence of planning, timing, dedication and discipline MOO and oh yeah, leadership and teamwork JMO

btw -- short answer no.....Thailand has amazing drill team

There's nothing wrong with asking for help, for admitting the need for expert resources. Maybe they're stalling, trying to appear as though they're problem solving until April when the currents die down. It's just so darned sad that pride gets in the way of obtaining help. JMO.

Divers fought strong currents and waves as they worked to hoist the tail of the crashed AirAsia plane out of the Java Sea on Saturday, two weeks ago after it went down ....

Inflatable bags were being attached to the rear of the aircraft, and a crane will be used to lift it from a depth of about 30 meters (100 feet).

"Additional lifting bags are needed because the tail part is getting heavier due to strong currents and piles of sand and mud"

Intermittent underwater ping-like sounds were picked up Friday about a kilometer (half mile) from where the tail was located, but it was unclear if they were coming from the cockpit voice and flight data recorders ...... It was possible the signals were coming from another source.

"Last night, our divers had opened the door of the tail cabin, searched around but found nothing," S.B Supriyadi, a director with the National Search and Rescue Agency, told AFP.

"But the boat above detected faint ping sounds believed to be from the black boxes about 1.6km southeast of the tail ....

"So far, our divers still have not been able to determine the coordinates of the black box."

American, Chinese and other foreign naval ships are also involved in the hunt for other parts of the plane's wreckage, as well as for the bodies of the passengers and crew.

RSBM:

Just 48 bodies have been found so far, according to Indonesian authorities. All but seven of those on board were Indonesian.

yes......and I am so hoping that the rest are in the main body of the plane at this point. I have let go of my hope that some made it to shore in a raft....

I really don't think we are going to hear the results of the autopsies either.....moo

I'm really soooooooo disappointed with how the whole thing has been handled - in just about every way, other than the ceremonial stuff. And with the autopsies - great sample that is - possibly 7 foreigners (if permission is given, and why would it be when they are singled out?!), and captain and copilot!!

And reading this (below) just reminds me loud and clear why I never fly Garuda or any other Indonesian airlines. It is not about safety, it is about who you can pay to do what you want. 5 airlines involved, 5 airports involved, 61 flights ...

At a press conference on Friday (09/01), Indonesia’s Transportation Minister Ignatius Jonan announced that flight schedule violations have been rife in Indonesia.

The Minister did not mention any other sanctions besides the suspension of the flights.

…. it does provide another example of unprofessionalism or corrupt behaviour among Indonesia’s civil service. Although Indonesian governments in the post-Suharto era have emphasized their desire to curtail widespread corruption within the nation’s business and government circles, progress has been slow as corruption is more-or-less ‘institutionalized’ in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

By the time they remove their bobbles, braid, buttons from their shirts then re-essemble for their next shift…..I'm guessing it could take hours. Love to know what the shirt furniture stands for!!!! Yep no flippin clue !!

Hoping that the top fin didn't separate from the rest. They won't need a heck of a lot of tail to get the black boxes too, judging by pics. They are supposedly just behind the rear door.

According to our Engineers the tail fin, horizontal stabilisers are part one piece. Whilst I can only go by their opinion they would consider the black box to still be bolted and in place. Let's hope so.

So grateful to you and your colleagues to help us sort out the details -- it's informative and reassuring!
