Retrieving wreckage from AirAsia Flight To Singapore- no survivors recovered #3

  • #501
Indonesian rescuers have managed to lift the fuselage of the crashed AirAsia jetliner near the surface before it sank to the ocean floor again when the lifting balloons deflated.

:gaah:

Maybe third time lucky. Hopefully they can quickly get a lot more balloons to the site and the weather will be good tomorrow. :crossfingers:

Though I wonder if the wreckage punctured the balloons? This story just broke, so we may hear more detail later.

(I get visions of nuk nuk and 3 stooges.....running around frantically JMO)

in this article it indicates ''belt'' broke -- maybe this is an article describing attempt #1...
hoping that they catch a break soon.

"They made several descents to the fuselage but the operation hit a snag when a belt attaching a lifting bag, or balloon, to the fuselage broke.
Divers successfully carried out the same procedure with the tail section of the aircraft earlier this month."

I really hope that this gets better soon for the sake of the families.

Well shoot, sorry about that. When I found the article directly I didn't need a subscription, but when you go to the article through my link it's subscription only. How strange... :scared:

That's was my first thought about the shark as well, but the diver said there were no bodies found where the shark was seen. If you want to read the article google "AirAsia divers face down fear" and you should be able to read it directly without a problem, watcher9.

Thanks!
I googled and found a link which I assume contains most of what you had posted. It does give a very vivid description of what divers go through trying to get down to the sea floor. In case anyone else had a problem, here is the new link.

“We were not successful today. The sling snapped off so the main body fell back to the sea floor,” S.B. Supriyadi, a rescue agency official, told AFP, adding several bodies fell from the fuselage when the piece of wreckage sunk once again. :(

The operation to lift the main body will resume tomorrow.

The rescue agency official also said a sonar scan had detected an object “suspected to be the cockpit” of the plane about 500 metres away from the fuselage.

But the search teams will prioritise floating the main body before verifying the object suspected to be the cockpit, Supriyadi added.

Four bodies believed to have come from inside the fuselage were retrieved as the team tried to lift the main section, bringing the total number of bodies recovered to 69, officials said.

Indonesian rescuers lifted the fuselage of the crashed AirAsia jetliner almost to the water's surface before it sank to the ocean floor again when the lifting balloons deflated.

Four bodies were discovered though around the area where dozens of divers were struggling with strong current and poor visibility to prepare to retrieve the 30-metre-long wreckage, said Suryadi Bambang Supriyadi, the operations chief at the National Search and Rescue Agency.

Authorities believe many of the other bodies are still inside the fuselage.

"We now need additional balloons," Supriyadi said after today's setback.

Media reports said the fuselage was lifted to about 7 metres (23 feet) from the surface before some of the balloons failed.

Some passengers' belongings such as biscuits, milk boxes, hair rollers and even an iPhone with an attached earphone, as well as aircraft parts such as seat cushions and tables, floated out as the fuselage was being lifted, the Detik.com website reported.

It sounds as if it was maybe actually only one attempt made today. Perhaps the sling snapped and the balloons deflated as the fuselage hit the bottom again.
I can see it taking them the best part of a day to prepare the fuselage for lifting, in those currents.

Let's hope they learn from their mistakes today.

 Starting to think the WSers should take over this operation...

And this is exactly why I cannot fault the divers or those who are attempting to retrieve the wreckage. Thankfully more remains have been recovered in the process, however.

:(

MOO

I can't fault the divers either, they are doing what they are told to do to the best of their ability. They are not engineers, they are divers. I do however look at Bambang, who is issuing these instructions, and wonder why he is not accessing the assistance that was offered, why he sent everyone else home.

I hope that's from Indonesia's day today!

Hard to tell if it is from today. When I followed Mark Hanrahan's link to this You Tube video, it looks like it could be yesterday's attempt, with the fuselage sinking again. Very disappointingly, it looks like they are trying to bring the fuselage up in the exact same way that they brought the tail up.

It is only a 40sec video .. worth watching. The video title translates to ... "Aircraft Agency Air Asia Had Elevated Surfaces Into Rope Puller But Disconnect"

Oh, I just looked at your CNN link, Dr Know. It looks like it is today. 2nd time rope has snapped. How much more stress can that fuselage take??!

If something does not work, change it.

A new attempt to lift the submerged fuselage of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 failed Sunday when a wire rope snapped after the wreckage reached the surface of the water, Indonesian officials said.

The Indonesian military, whose divers are working on the recovery effort, said the team was evaluating the next step. Supriyadi, who goes by only one name, said he expected them to try again.

As the fuselage neared the surface on Sunday, one body appeared in the water and was retrieved, the military said. It's the 70th recovered so far during weeks of searching.
