The police chief says it was "good old-fashioned police work" which led to the suspect.

"It was actually a video which provided us with a description of a vehicle," he says.

"That was corroborated with a tip that was received through the tip center."

They were able to trace the car to a rental company, which led them to the suspect's real name.

But he abandoned his rental car (that he used for two horrendous crimes that was captured in multiple cameras) outside a storage facility rented under his own name?
well-planned in some ways, sloppy as hell in others

NBC News: Claudio Manuel Neeves Valente age 48 has been identified by Providence Police as the Brown University suspect.
RI AG says it was the man they were seeking to question yesterday — a homeless man — who “blew the case wide open” and gave police the description of the car.

Yes you have a point. Further suffering for the victims' families. I just wanted this murderer to rot in prison.
However I hope that his death brings a little bit of solace to the families and loved ones, which is the foremost sentiment.
Yeah. One of the reasons we have spree killers is that they LOVE the attention their crimes gives them. I personally am kind of glad he’s seen his last sunset, but cannot speak for victim families, so I just wonder if anyone has data on whether it’s better for victim families to experience trial or to process the suicide of the murderer.

Suspect named as Claudio Nevez Valente; confirmed dead

Their investigations, based on public tips, led them to a car-rental location in Massachusetts, where they found the suspect's name and matched him to their person of interest, Perez says.

Perez identified him as Claudio Nevez Valente, 48, a Brown University student from Portugal whose last known address was in Miami.

Perez says Valente took his own life this evening.

As a reminder, the MIT professor who was shot dead was also from Portugal.

Second person in photo came forward and 'blew up the case'

Police received a vital tip from another individual who came forward to police with "information that blew up the case".

That person was spotted on CCTV footage and felt compelled to come speak to the police.

That person's tip "that led to a car, which led us to a name, which led us to the photograph" of the suspect.

FBI: 'We got him'

"We got him," says FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Ted Docks.

"Even though the suspect was found dead tonight our work is not done. There are many questions that need to be answered," he says.

The FBI deployed around 500 agents to assist local authorities in the investigation, he says.

He says that officials are still looking into the suspect's motive.

I wonder if he knew Professor Loureiro either from Portugal, or through some sort of Portuguese expat or Portuguese-American community?

<snipped>

They are close in age, 47 and 48, might be both.

Admitted as a Brown Ph.D. student in physics department in 2000-2001, and took leave of absence and never returned. He knew the building and likely spent a lot of time there, where the shooting happened. --today's presser.

wait a second...

person 2 = redditor = homeless guy???

edit: no, the redditor is not person 2. .... so i guess both the redditor and the person 2 gave descriptions of the car?

It sounds like Loureiro and Valenti attended the same university in Portugal, at the same time. Crazy.. I wonder if it was some sort of long standing grudge or just jealousy at Prof. Loureiro's success.

Not sure where the photo came from, I referenced it from the Brian Crandell twitter post above.

The comments below this photo are worth reading.

The photo came from Page 17 of the Affidavit.

FBI executed search warrants at New Hampshire storage facility

From CNN's Taylor Romine

The FBI executed authorized search warrants at the Salem, New Hampshire, facility today, where they found the suspect, FBI Special Agent in Charge Ted Docks said.

Person who came to police with information ”blew this case right open,” attorney general says

From CNN's Tori B. Powell

The investigation into the Brown University shooting from the weekend relied on “threads” of information to get officials answers on the shooter’s wherabouts, according to Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha.

A person who came to local police officers with information, Neronha said, “blew this case right open.”

“That person led us to the car, which led us to the name, which led us to the photographs of that individual renting the car, which matched the clothing of our shooter here in Providence that matched the satchel that we see here in Providence,” Neronha said.
