Queen Mary’s Bangles each consist of “39 brilliants, the gold sides finely engraved.”

The traditional Indian ornaments were a wedding present to the then Princess Mary of Teck from the Bombay Presidency, an administrative subdivision of India.

The bangles were among the wedding presents for the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947.

Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style

In 2026, to mark the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth, The King’s Gallery in London will play host to the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of The late Queen’s fashion ever mounted, Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style.

Shown here is a cream silk evening gown with foliate beaded embroidery, designed by Sir Normal Hartnell, and worn by Queen Elizabeth II in 1956. It is just one of approximately 200 items, many on display for the first time, charting the remarkable story of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch through clothing and accessories worn in all ten decades of her life.

Oh, now I have another visit to London to plan.

First the announcement that the British Museum will be showing the real Bayeux Tapestry in September 2026 and now the news that the late Queen Elizabeth II's style with personal clothing will be on exhibit at the King's Gallery at Buckingham Palace.

Her birthday was in April, so I might expect this will open then. The King's Gallery does not yet have firm dates, but mentions spring until autumn. I wonder if it is even possible the two exhibits might overlap for us overseas Brits to see efficiently.

There, huge crowds gathered to witness the newly-married Princess arrive with her grandmother, Queen Mary. The Princess was photographed studying the stone as Queen Mary and Chopra looked on.

However, Queen Mary was not happy. “She was visibly upset because she was not the one being given the diamond,” according to Chopra. “She turned to my grandfather and asked: ‘Where’s mine?’

~

Many contemporary accounts, including an essay about the Cartier exhibition on the V&A’s website, have wrongly declared that the Williamson brooch belongs to the Royal Collection.

In fact, the brooch remained throughout the Queen’s life in her own private collection and was inherited on her death by the King.

Wow!
This is so exciting.
I was just looking at some of their magnificent jewels and also found the Met's "Body Transformed".
Looking forward to reading about your family and admiring their creations.
Thank you!

For anyone in NYC who is interested, the authors of “Marcus & Co” will be doing a book signing at Mackclowe Gallery, PLUS the gallery will be showing its collection of Marcus & Co jewelry. We were fortunate to get to visit the “family jewels” there with another jewelry historian about 20 years ago. There were no pieces with teeth. 😄
