A telling moment from Starmer on Trump and Nato

Chris Mason
Political editor

Speaking at Prime Minister's Questions, Keir Starmer has again pointed to President Trump’s public backing for Nato’s Article 5 – the commitment of each member to come to the assistance of another in the event of an attack.

But it is telling in itself that such reassurances have to be sought – as Nato's capacity for deterrence relies on Article 5 being sancosanct and so beyond even the subject of discussion.

It would be a little bit like having to be reassured that your front door keys will actually open your front door.

The prospect that they won’t isn’t normal.

Yes, the Euro's need the U.S. for their common defense. This is a well known fact. A little thank you to the the U.S. taxpayer would be nice :)

"A spokesperson for Keir Starmer has declined to comment on Wednesday on a Financial Times report that the US had cut off intelligence-sharing with Ukraine.

“It remains a long standing position not to comment on intelligence, but what I would say is we have been clear previously that we would do everything to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position, particularly around defence and security,” the spokesperson said."

"But Russia has opposed European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine. “Russia’s overall war aims will not have changed,” Giles said. “So any force in Ukraine intended to preserve peace is an obstacle to them, and we can expect Russia to oppose it with all of the dire threats that it can muster.”

So far, Trump and his team appear to be supportive of a US peacekeeping operation in Ukraine once a deal with Russia is struck. But if Russia remains firmly opposed to it, “based on past performance, we can expect the Trump administration to back Moscow‘s demands”, Giles said."

Seems to be exactly what is happening. No shipments of the weaponry already ordered, no receiving intelligence ... with the official language of "oh, we are happy to talk to Ukraine if they can give us some confidence building measures".

There is no low that is too low.

Ukraine deal needs security guarantees to avoid breaches by Putin's Russia, UK's Starmer says

Speaking in the House of Commons in the last few minutes, UK prime minister Keir Starmer insisted on a need to secure “a lasting peace” in Ukraine, saying that:

The whole point of ensuring that there’s a lasting peace – and that any deal, if there’s a deal, is defended – is to avoid conflict, to ensure that we do have peace.

The way to ensure we have peace is to ensure there are guarantees for any deal that is in place, because the surest risk that there will be conflict is if Putin thinks that he can breach any deal that may be arrived at.

Starmer also subtly hit back at US vice-president JD Vance for his comments on European troops from yesterday, opening the Q&A session in parliament by paying tribute to UK soldiers killed in Afghanistan, stressing “these men fought and died for their country, ... fighting for Britain alongside our allies.”

In Iraq and Afghanistan 643 individuals died, and many more were injured, he says.

He later gets pointedly asked about Vance’s comments, and says:

We do remember the role that we’ve played historically with our allies, and we particularly remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice in that duty for their country and for our allies and that’s why it’s so important that we make that point today.

"A British man has been jailed for 19 years after a Russian court found him guilty of fighting for Ukraine in the country's Kursk region.

James Scott Rhys Anderson, 22, had been charged with terrorist and mercenary offences and was found guilty after a closed trial.

The court said he was to serve the first five years of his sentence in prison and the remainder in a penal colony."

That's a point. One way to end the war is if some secret mission could capture Putin - he is a wanted war criminal with an arrest out for him. Has no one considered that? A secret mission? :-) JMO MOO

The problem is that no one can get near him. The man is very serious about his security, understandable considering he is a prime target. Imo if it was possible, someone would've despatched of him by now.

Japanese experts say he also uses body doubles. They say that two other "Putins" in 2023 public appearances had a 53% resemblance and a 40% resemblance to Putin.

National Security Adviser Mike Waltz says the US has "taken a step back" on sharing intelligence with Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters, Waltz adds that the US is "pausing and reviewing all aspects of this relationship".

He says he spoke on the phone with his Ukrainian counterpart.

Waltz says they had “good talks” about the location and substance of the next round of negotiations.

He says there will be movement in “very short order.”

I spoke with @Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz to have an honest conversation about various issues and our vision for the future security architecture.

We rely on Europe’s unity around Ukraine and are working toward it. We all want a safe future for our people. Not a temporary ceasefire, but an end to the war once and for all. With our coordinated efforts and U.S. leadership, this is entirely achievable.

We will always remember Germany’s contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s air shield and, most importantly, to protecting thousands of lives. We see opportunities to expand our cooperation in this area. We will continue working on it.

Thank you for your support.

Lukashenko invites Trump, Zelensky, Putin to hold talks in Minsk. "We'll come to an agreement quietly, without noise, without shouting. So tell Trump: I'm waiting for him here, along with Putin and Zelensky."

Ukraine natural resources deal not ready as Trump seeks better terms, CBS News reports.

An agreement between Kyiv and Washington on Ukraine's natural resources is not finalized as U.S. President Donald Trump seeks a "bigger, better deal," CBS News reported on March 4, citing undisclosed sources.

No DC visit planned with Starmer and Zelensky, French presidency says

We reported earlier on remarks from a French government spokesperson, who said Marcon was considering returning to Washington DC with Starmer and Zelensky for talks.

But the French presidency appears to now be playing down the prospect.

The Élysée Palace says no new visit by Macron is being considered "at this stage", AFP reports.

The UK prime minister's official spokesperson also says the French government has clarified that there are no plans for a joint trip to Washington.

Most French support assistance to Ukraine, sending peacekeepers, poll shows. Some 64% of respondents want France to continue to provide assistance to Ukraine. Meanwhile, 20% of respondents believe that the amount of aid must be increased.

Zelensky has said numerous times that he would wear a suit only after Ukraine wins the war. In the documentary by Ukrainian journalist and TV host Dmytro Komarov called "A Year," Zelensky even showed the blazer he plans to wear on Ukraine's victory day.

"It's a symbol. It means that the war will be over soon, we will win soon, and we all will wear suits again," Zelensky said.

China is READY for “any type of WAR” with the US — This is how the Chinese Foreign Ministry responded to Trump’s new tariffs on Chinese imports.

The whole point of the NATO international alliance is to provide for "the collective defence" of each member state should it be attacked. It was formed to deter Russian (then Soviet) aggression away from it's member states. That NATO Article 5 is exactly what gives it the strength to be the deterance that it is. It is why NATO exists.

That is exactly why Putin hates it so much and wants to see it's collapse. "You can't just walk in and attack one of us, else you'll have to deal with all of us".

Role of NATO

Because of the great deterrent force that NATO is, it's only ever had to invoke that Article 5 one time. That was by the US after 9/11. Every single nation nation and 33 others (amongst them Ukraine who had 14 KIA) showed up to fight and die alongside them. Every. Single. One. None asked for "thanks" and none asked for a single dime back for honouring the agreement that they had signed and committed to uphold.

NATO spending

Member Nations' military budget spending is considered their contribution to the NATO funding. There is no minimum required by the signed agreement, but in 2014 directly as a result of Russia's invasion into Ukraine, nations have committed to try to attain 2% of their GDP (not enough IMO) towards their nations' military spending. That would be 2% of taxes per each and every taxpaying citizen in each member nation. There are nations that actually contribute more than the US per citizen taxes to annual military spending (Poland amongst them). Aiming for 4%. Trump has called for 5% GDP contributions from all members per citizen (that would mean the US would have to contribute another 500 billion BTW - see last link in this response).

Canada certainly lags but we are now considering counting "non-hard military" spending towards our % too as we currently only report our actual defence budget spending towards it. Things that we don't currently include as "NATO" defence spending are our coast guard, border agency, the costs of our national policing. The portion of costs of running the plants and wages producing military munitions and equipment that we sell to others (non-NATO). The US does include many of those costs (coast guard etc).

Suffice to say, that NATO funding is not, never has been, about "equally spending of total dollars by country"; it's about spending an equal share per citizen towards NATO. NATO (as per link above) is currently working to futher define what can/cannot be included as costs for contribuition "to NATO" spending by a nation.

% are also a very fickle thing: a high populous, yet small geographic land mass NATO nation is going to see it's % go a lot further to "defence" (Poland) than a geographicly large land mass, low population nation (Canada at 40 million population for example). Frankly Canada could spend 10% of our taxes per citizen towards the military and still not be abe to fully cover the land mass we have. NATO is looking at ways (see above link again) on how exactly to see the big pop/low land mass nations actually be able to spend their entire allocation without doing things like ... nuking up. These anomolies are exactly why "collective defence" from attack by and for NATO nations was brought into force.

The US also has higher military expenditures that count towards defence spending because it does project to so many parts and places in the world (not necessarily NATO nations) such as South Korea, Japan etc.

Just commenting on the Twitter videos supposedly showing young Ukrainian men being grabbed off the street and forcibly drafted to fight Ukraine’s “unwinnable” war. These are not from an approved source on Websleuths and could be from a Russian source. They claim there are thousands of these videos. Does it seem likely that so many of these random incidents would just happen to be recorded, complete with blood curdling screams?

JD Vance referred to Zelensky forcibly drafting men into his army. It occurs to me that he may have seen these videos. He and Trump also fell for the false story about Haitian immigrants…”They’re eating the dogs. They’re eating the cats.” So I wouldn’t trust either one of them with this story about Zelensky forcibly drafting men. They are both shockingly gullible.

JMO
Eughhh that's such Bs those videos. They are not grabbing men off the streets I know my family signed up willingly including family/friends from canada a few have died in this war but they died with pride fighting for their homes and family. Ukraini has been fighting this war for many years Jmoo

Child Deportation

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, a top Kremlin children’s official, for allegedly illegally deporting Ukrainian children.

Civilian Killings in Bucha

After Russian troops withdrew from areas near Kyiv, Ukrainian forces discovered hundreds of civilian bodies in Bucha. Many victims were found with bound hands, lying in streets and basements.

Infrastructure Destruction

Russian forces conducted nine waves of comprehensive attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure between March and August 2024. The Hague Court issued arrest warrants for General Sergei Kobylas and Admiral Viktor Sokolov for directing operations targeting power stations and substations.

Execution of Prisoners

The UN reports at least 71 Ukrainian prisoners of war were executed by Russian forces, with an additional 21 dying in Russian custody. A notable case involves soldier Oleksandr Matsiyevsky, who was filmed being killed after shouting “Glory to Ukraine” while in Russian captivity.

Civilian Targeting

On 8 April 2022, a missile strike on Kramatorsk railway station killed at least 58 people and wounded over 100. The attack, using a Tochka-U ballistic missile with cluster munitions, was one of the most deadly attacks on Ukrainian civilians.

Prosecutor Yurii Belousov told Radio Free Europe that investigators face additional risks, including “double-tap” strikes where rescuers are targeted after initial attacks.
