I really hope President Zelenskyy doesn't sign anything with USA . No one can trust the USA anymore. Their words mean nothing. .Trump wants the minerals and will give Ukraine nothing. theres no benefit for Ukraine when dealing with the USA .

To confirm that the flow of Western chips to Russia is not a fiction, we carried out an undercover experiment.

The Kyiv Independent took on the role of an employee of a real Ruselectronics’ subsidiary, the Almaz research and production enterprise, which produces electronic systems for military equipment.

Surprisingly, the most difficult aspect of the experiment was to create an email account with a Russian email service, as they are blocked in Ukraine. When that was done, trying to buy banned Western chips in Russia was easy.

This is almost comically ridiculous. Good to know they spared no expense reinforcing those restrictions. 🙄😆😩

Why would Putin stick to any deal anyway?

"Vladimir Putin told Bill Clinton three years before his 2014 attack on Ukraine that he was not bound by the Budapest Memorandum guaranteeing the country’s territorial integrity, according to the former US president."

“Putin said to me: ‘… I know Boris agreed to go along with you and John Major and Nato, but he never got it through the Duma [Russian parliament]. We have our extreme nationalists too. I don’t agree with it and I do not support it and I’m not bound by it.’

“I knew from that day forward, it was just a matter of time,” the former president said of Putin launching an attack."

This strikes me as emblematic of the familiar saying, “when someone shows you who they are, believe them.”

Though, rather than a backstabbing friend or a cheating spouse, this long ago declaration by Putin has global ramifications for life, death, conquest, and war.
A rearrangement of nations and allies and enemies affecting the entirety of the world.

Putin meant it then, he means it now, and he must be chuckling somewhere as to how simple it was to turn a very gullible yet powerful man to his side.

IMO

I was thinking about this line of reasoning and my opinion is this. I just don't think Russia is going to point blank turn around, leave Ukraine and lay down their arms. It's simply an unrealistic hope. So what are the alternatives? Fight! Well, that avenue of thought means war. And with the U.S. pulling back from that pathway, and with the desire to defeat Russia so strong, then there are a few things that will need to be sourced elsewhere. Billions of dollars, likely tens of billions, or even hundreds of billions, will be required. Armaments of all sorts, from drones, missiles, tanks, artillery, ammo, missiles, and a whole litany of supporting supplies and equipment, intelligence, and most tragic....men and women to commit to battle. All this for an extended period, likely years. In the event it would touch off a world war, then other factors, many very dire, arise.

The other avenue of thought is to come to the table and hammer out a deal for peace.
What’s unrealistic is thinking Putin wouldn’t violate any agreement made, he has done that more than once with agreements. What security is Putin offering Ukraine?

Which country will he invade next if he is given free rein to walk all over Ukraine? It’s unrealistic to think he wouldn’t invade elsewhere, again he’s don’t that before.

I’ve said it before - if we don’t learn from history we are doomed to repeat it.

Maybe another Cold War is starting?

Russia said it was expelling two British “diplomats” ..... the embassy’s second secretary and the husband of the first secretary, the FSB said “counterintelligence work had revealed an undeclared British intelligence presence under the cover of the national embassy.”

As a side note, in 2023 Australia's security force (ASIO) uncovered a Russian spy ring here of Russian embassy and consular staff and operatives. Just so people understand that Russia is VERY familiar with installing spies in their own embassies.

Fake Russian diplomats revealed as heart of ‘hive’ spy ring in Australia
I don't think the cold war ever ended for Putin JMO. He probably didn't accept Glasnost, just as he didn't accept the Budapest Memorandum JMO.

The US has also just allowed a Russian embassy hasn't it? So the US is opening up a Russian embassy and allowing diplomats and Russia is expelling British Diplomats. Suggests even more strongly the US/Russia "alliance" JMO

Half of global population descended from ancient group in what is now Ukraine, DNA research shows.

Around 4 billion people can trace their ancestry to the Yamnaya, a community of cattle herders who lived in what is today Ukraine and spread across Europe and Asia, according to new DNA research led by David Reich, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School.

As of February, 485 Ukrainian cultural sites have been confirmed as damaged during the war, including two archeological sites. Russia has also consistently looted Ukrainian artifacts from Crimea, Donbas, and elsewhere since 2014, transporting many to Russian museums.
I think this is one of the reasons Putin thinks Ukraine should be part of Russia - it is the "heart" or history of Russia JMO

"In a long-winded 2021 essay he even suggested "Russians and Ukrainians were one people" dating back to the late 9th Century."

To me that is a silly, pathetic argument anyway. That's like saying British people should be part of France or Germany because our culture evolved from Norman and Anglo Saxon JMO

"Perhaps Mr Putin's most inflammatory claim was regarding Poland. Mr Putin claimed that Poland - which was invaded by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939 - "collaborated with Hitler".

This is just the sort of comment Trump is making IMO. That Ukraine started the war and Zelensky is a Dictator. JMO

The optics of an oligarch who injected himself into politics suggesting they put sanctions on foreign oligarchs to force them to politically intervene in a war is really something.

I'd imagine he's trying to normalize the idea of oligarchs deciding political fates.

This is head twisting IMO. Weapons ban could be lifted "if talks go well tomorrow". Presumably meaning if Zelensky agrees to a truce (all on his own without Russia). And if he stops fighting he won't need weapons will he?! JMO

Sounds like Starmer has persuaded the US to re-start Intelligence sharing - along with "discussions about tarrifs" Or maybe, as someone mentioned earlier, the US realise others are considering not sharing intelligence with the US now. MOO

"He" is Rubio

"Trump envoy makes disputed intel claim as crunch peace talks to begin"

"He says the minerals deal - abandoned after Donald Trump's Oval Office row with Volodomyr Zelenskyy - is still on table but not part of this conversation or the main topic on this agenda

On the vexed topic of intelligence sharing (see 14.11 post), he adds: "The Ukrainians are already receiving all defensive intelligence information as we speak.

"I think all the notion of the pause in aid broadly is something I hope we can resolve… what happens tomorrow will be key to that."

Pressed further on the subject, he says: "Yeah, they [Ukraine] have the ability to defend themselves. But I don't want to get too deep into the intelligence piece."

Starmer and Trump speak ahead of Ukraine peace talks

...." Ahead of this summit, Downing Street has confirmed Sir Keir Starmer and Trump spoke today for around 20 minutes.

Reuters

Reuters
The prime minister's spokesperson said UK officials had spoken to Ukrainian counterparts as well, with several deadly attacks on Ukraine launched from Russia.

The spokesperson said Starmer wants to see intelligence sharing resume as quickly as possible.

They added: "The prime minister said he hoped there would be a positive outcome to the talks that would enable US aid and intelligence sharing to be restarted.

"The two leaders also spoke about the economic deal they had discussed at the White House and the prime minister welcomed the detailed conversations that had already happened to move this forward. Both leaders agreed to stay in touch."

It is understood Starmer and Trump also discussed trade and tariffs."

No risk of encirclement for Ukrainian troops in Russia, Kyiv's top general says

Ukrainian troops fighting in Russia's Kursk region are not at risk of encirclement, Kyiv's top general has said.

Russian forces have launched a counteroffensive alongside North Korean troops in an attempt to encircle the Ukrainian soldiers.

Oleksandr Syrskyi said in a post on social media that the situation was under control
