I think I'm fairly read up on war crimes. I was just thinking it's probably been helpful to take all the firepower from Russian equipment and dead Russian soldiers. That IS acceptable, right?

Ukraine cannot negotiate with a gun to its head, Joly says | CBC News

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly says Ukraine cannot negotiate a peace agreement with Russia while under intense military threat.

"We understand the importance of diplomacy, but at the same time, Ukraine cannot negotiate with a gun [to] their head," Joly said in an interview Sunday on Rosemary Barton Live.

[...]

"I'm very concerned about the irrationality of President Putin. But I think that the question of using nuclear weapons in this situation is unconscionable, it's unjustifiable. This madness has to stop."

[...]

Joly said Sunday "many, many more options are on the table" when it comes to additional sanctions, but did not specifically answer a question on whether that included actions against Russia's important oil and gas industry.

[...]

"What we need to do right now is continue to have an ambassador in Russia, because the glimpse of hope is definitely that we're seeing Russians themselves ... speaking out and taking a lot of risk against the Russian regime."

[...]

Bob Rae, Canada's representative to the United Nations, said Putin's actions were a sign of "deeper irrationality" and appeared to other Russians in positions of power to chart a more reasonable course.

[...]

"This campaign has proven to be a significant disaster for President Putin, and I think the Russian people are increasingly coming to understand that."

We’ve cleared our cellar out today, been on the to do list forever and it was a nice enough day to sort stuff out in the garden. Told my friend and she said “oh good, we were just saying your cellar is the nearest bunker”.

We discussed this the other day, and have zero desire to survive in a post nuclear world. FWIW.

Hopefully, this won't be an issue. Could the world get any crazier? Wait, hold my beer!?

Current state of the skies on Flight Radar. Lots of smaller private jets heading back to Moscow, and a big gap over Ukraine and Belarus. Looks like the commercial / passenger airlines (the blue ones) are steering well clear of the region.

If Russian soldiers start raping women, I would hope that the civilized world won't put up with that outrage.

I found this diagram on Wikipedia: Countries that have nuclear weapons.

1920px-Nuclear_weapons_states.svg.png

Map of nuclear-armed states of the world NPT-designated nuclear weapon states (China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States) Other states with nuclear weapons (India, North Korea, Pakistan) Other states presumed to have nuclear weapons (Israel) NATO member nuclear weapons sharing states (Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey) States formerly possessing nuclear weapons (Belarus, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Ukraine)

I did not know that Belarus and Ukraine formerly had nuclear weapons. What faith do we have that Belarus or Khasastan have no current nuclear weapon capacity?

Belarus and it's foaming-at-the-mouth-rabid President Lukashenko worry me very much as Russian proxies in this war.

US company tracking power outages in Ukraine in first-of-its-kind war zone effort

The newest venture to provide the world updates on Ukraine’s power outages has not been without its challenges.

Robinson said it has been difficult to access some of the publicly available data because electric providers have been hardening their systems to protect their infrastructure from cyber warfare.

Before the heart of the conflict, about 70% of the eastern European nation was available to be viewed on PowerOutage.com/ua.

Fortunately for residents in Ukraine, power outages have mostly lower end of the impact scale, with only around 70,000 outages reported country-wide as of Friday evening.

Robison said it appears the conflict has only had a limited impact on the electric grid and most infrastructure remains intact.

These images are heartbreaking. How do these little ones process this? :(

I wondered if he's taking steroids. When he spoke on camera recently his face looked bloated to me.
I wondered the very same thing about steroids (or some other medication). Putin's face is completely round now. It wasn't like that before.

Definite war crime. But heck, I've lost track of Russia's war crimes in less than a week.

I have a flood basement, pretty well sealed off with no windows - I wouldn't want to survive my children or grandchildren who don't have such a space. A 4 minute warning would mean just a group family phone call.
God forbid it won't happen.

The civilized world has been useless in preventing sexual violence as a weapon in current conflicts in Ethiopia, Sudan, Congo, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, etc, etc, etc

The Kyiv Independent on Twitter
⚡️Klitschko's spokesperson denies that Kyiv is 'encircled.'

In an interview with AP, Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that ‘Kyiv was encircled’ but ready to fight.

His spokesperson said that he misspoke, and that such information is “a lie and a manipulation.”

Russian POWs Say They Were Tricked, Threatened During Invasion (rferl.org)
The Ukrainian Interior Ministry has set up a Telegram channel with videos that it says show captured, injured, and dead Russian soldiers. This video shows Russian soldiers being interrogated. The prisoners are being questioned by their Ukrainian captors. It is impossible to independently confirm whether the information they give is accurate. The date and location of the video has not been verified.

'Mama, I Didn't Want To Come': Ukraine Asks Russians To ID Their Killed, Captured Relatives (rferl.org)
As the Russian government remains silent about the number of losses it has incurred in its invasion of Ukraine, Kyiv is appealing directly to families of Russian soldiers to identify their relatives captured or killed in the four-day-old war.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry issued the appeal on February 27, directing relatives of Russian soldiers to online platforms where they can search through photos and videos of Russian soldiers captured or killed by Ukrainian forces.

The initiative, called Ishchi Svoikh (Look For Your Own), appears aimed in part at undermining morale and support for the war in Russia, where officials and state media have refrained from disclosing details of Russian casualties and military assaults against Ukrainian cities, including the capital, Kyiv.

I would worry about Chechnya too

Does this also track military flights?

I clicked on a helicopter flying into Poland and it was RAF, so yes… but surely they can’t track all of them? There must be stealth planes up there? I’m not sure.
