China started making aggressive moves well before then. They started in 2005 when they passed their anti-secession law 'stating China's right to use "non-peaceful means" against Taiwan if it tried to "secede" from China.'

The threat was put there very clearly.

(We watch China very closely here, for obvious reasons.)

Thank you for adding that! China's made some iffy moves in the past few years. I know you guys have been keeping a close eye on them. Hopefully, all nations can start treating their people--and neighbors--better in the coming years.

I think China is watching very closely to see how the world reacts to Russia. I think their decision on Taiwan could hinge on this war. JMO/MOO

The United States has ordered twelve members of Russia’s mission to the United Nations to leave America for engaging in non-diplomatic activities.

“Those diplomats that have been asked to leave the United States were engaged in activities that were not in accordance with their responsibilities and obligations as diplomats,” Deputy US Ambassador Richard Mills told the UN Security Council, without elaborating further.

Great, great interview with Fiona Hill.

‘Yes, He Would’: Fiona Hill on Putin and Nukes

Hill said. “Every country in the world should be paying close attention to this.”

We’ve seen pressure being put on Kazakhstan to reorient itself back toward Russia, instead of balancing between Russia and China, and the West. And just a couple of days before the invasion of Ukraine in a little-noticed act, Azerbaijan signed a bilateral military agreement with Russia. This is significant because Azerbaijan’s leader has been resisting this for decades. And we can also see that Russia has made itself the final arbiter of the future relationship between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Georgia has also been marginalized after being a thorn in Russia’s side for decades. And Belarus is now completely subjugated by Moscow.

But amid all this, Ukraine was the country that got away. And what Putin is saying now is that Ukraine doesn’t belong to Ukrainians. It belongs to him and the past.
Basically, if Vladimir Putin has his way, Ukraine is not going to exist as the modern-day Ukraine of the last 30 years.

Not sure if The Kyiv Independent is a good source either.

I really appreciate Al-Jazeera's objective reporting in "real time". Sometimes I find myself reading their total coverage for huge chunks of time.

This was further down in the page you posted....

The European Union agreed FOR THE FIRST TIME, to jointly finance weapons deliveries to a third country to help Ukraine fend off the Russian invasion, EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell said.

A number of European countries including Norway, Italy and Finland have announced they will provide arms to Ukraine.

Russia’s foreign ministry has said those supplying lethal weapons to Ukraine will bear responsibility should they be used during Russia’s military campaign there.

The ministry added that the steps the European Union has taken against Russia will not be left without a harsh response.

I like them because they exclude any opinions or slant. They just state the facts.

Eg (both sides of the story/propaganda):

"On the fifth day of fighting, Ukrainian forces claim Russian troops have slowed their advance but are still aiming for Kyiv, while Russia reported progress in the south.

Naval battles were raging around the Black Sea port of Odessa as well as near Ochakiv and Chornomorsk. Russia was still trying to organise a naval landing at Mariupol on the shores of the southern Sea of Azov.

Ukraine said it was still is holding Kharkiv, 500 kilometres east of Kyiv, despite Russian bombardments. The Ukrainian army said three Russian missiles targeted Kyiv. One was intercepted.

Russia said it was besieging the cities of Kherson and Berdyansk close to Crimea. Ukraine confirmed Berdyansk has been occupied by Russian soldiers.

It's fine. It was established in part with an emergency grant from the European Endowment for Democracy.

The European Endowment for Democracy is a European non-governmental organisation for the promotion of democracy, particularly in the European Neighbourhood, Turkey and the Western Balkans.[1][2] It was started in 2013 following a proposal by the Polish Presidency of the European Council,[3][4][5] and receives funding from the European Commission and twenty-three European countries

Well big surprise. Just looking at the title to your link. "Putin willing to consider halting attacks on civilians". That is an admission of war crimes. JMO
Oh it certainly is! I sure hope The Hague is taking note of that.

Who is sending weaponry to Ukraine and has any arrived yet?

United States (has committed)
United Kingdom (will supply)
France (already sent)
The Netherlands (will supply)
Germany (will supply)
Canada (is sending)
Sweden (has sent)
Belgium (will supply)
Portugal (is giving)
Greece (is sending)
Romania (is sending)
Spain (has promised)
Czech Republic (is sending)

Australia (sending via NATO)
Finland (will send)

I think there are others, because some - like Australia - are supplying via NATO.
It is not clear what has arrived in Ukraine.

Which countries are sending military aid to Ukraine?
Australia to help send weapons to Ukraine via NATO
Finland sends weapons and ammunition to Ukraine in policy shift

We are all going to have to be watching China.... They are spinning great tales in China right now..... This is from the NYT..so behind a pay wall for some... but here is just a bit of the indoctrination...

""If President Vladimir V. Putin is looking for international support and approval for his invasion of Ukraine, he can turn to the Chinese internet.

Its users have called him “Putin the Great,” “the best legacy of the former Soviet Union” and “the greatest strategist of this century.” They have chastised Russians who protested against the war, saying they had been brainwashed by the United States.

Mr. Putin’s speech on Thursday, which essentially portrayed the conflict as one waged against the West, won loud cheers on Chinese social media. Many people said they were moved to tears. “If I were Russian, Putin would be my faith, my light,” wrote @jinyujiyiliangxiaokou, a user of the Twitter-like platform Weibo.

the world overwhelmingly condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Chinese internet, for the most part, is pro-Russia, pro-war and pro-Putin.""

Why the Chinese Internet Is Cheering Russia’s Invasion
China sounded pretty darn tepid today at the UN General Assembly. I don't know why but I was expecting a bit more.

This article offers some sense of hope, if Putin can be persuaded not to vaporize Kyiv. This is a very interesting discussion

Russia-Ukraine war: What is Putin’s endgame?

"Accordingly, placing a Russian-friendly government in Kyiv is most likely the main objective of the Kremlin’s military intervention, said Nitoiu.

However, given the low likelihood of this being widely accepted among the Ukrainian population, Putin would have more success if the current government, perhaps stripped of some members but continuing to be led by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was retained in office and able to negotiate with the Russians, Gill added.

“I think Putin’s options are quite limited. Russia is now trapped in achieving some sort of victory in Ukraine. Countries like China, India or Iran are watching closely, and not being able to declare victory will definitely undermine its image of a strong military power,” Nitoiu said.
I've got an ominous pit in my stomach. I think Putin is going to try and go gangbusters now. I think Belarus soldiers are going to be asked to play a bigger role too. I sure do pray I'm wrong and that the Russian people military and civilians will make a difference <3
