As we are democratic countries...shouldn't there be a referendum so that the "people" can have a say in the choice of intervention by Nato or not.

Of course this would take ages to organize....

'This is genocide of Ukrainian people' - Mariupol city council
Mariupol city council said Russia was constantly and deliberately shelling critical civilian infrastructure in the southern Ukrainian port, leaving it without water, heating or power and preventing bringing supplies or evacuating people.

“They are breaking food supplies, setting us up in a blockade, as in the old Leningrad,” the council said in a statement, reported by the Reuters news agency.

“Deliberately, for seven days, they have been destroying the city’s critical life-support infrastructure. We have no light, water or heat again.”

The council said it was seeking to create a humanitarian corridor for the city, as well as trying to restore infrastructure.

“We are being destroyed as a nation. This is genocide of Ukrainian people,” it said.

⚡️Volkswagen, Ikea suspend business in Russia.
The largest furniture retailer Ikea closes all of its stores in Russia, pauses sourcing from both Belarus and Russia. German vehicle manufacturer Volkswagen shuts production at two Russian factories and halts exports to Russia.

This must be helping to "get the word out" to the Russians....
When so many are losing their jobs, what is the government telling them????

Hackers changed the call sign of a Putin-linked superyacht to 'FCKPTN' and set the ship's destination as 'hell'

The Anonymous "hactivist" collective has messed with the call sign of a superyacht said to be owned by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The group claimed credit on Tuesday for the hack, which involved changing the call sign of the vessel — named Graceful — to "FCKPTN" and altering the craft's destination to "hell."

The Anonymous group claimed credit for the hack with a tweet reading: "Now Putin's yacht is on the right track! ;) #FckPutin."

I'm surprised about South Africa. The others, not so much.

I’m a bit surprised about India, too. No idea what their relations are like with Russia though.

Laos, most heavily bombed/mined country in the world (and the only place I’ve had a gun pointed at me, by a small child no less - just playing with his AK47, as you do!) you’d think they’d get it.

It’s a risk isn’t it, sitting on the fence? Some of those countries are politically unstable and might need UN help in the future.

This was quite a big story here in Ireland in January. The government got nowhere trying to get the Russians to move their naval exercises outside the Irish EEZ but a group of fishermen announced they would sail out and confront them and the Russians agreed to move their exercises.

How a group of Irish fishermen forced the Russian Navy into a U-turn - CNN

How Irish Fishermen Took on the Russian Fleet and Won

(...)

Murphy said the fishermen would be making a coordinated effort to head off the Russian fleet. “Our boats will be going out to that area on the first of February to go fishing,” he told Politico on Jan. 25. “When one boat needs to return to port, another will head out so there is a continuous presence on the water. If that is in proximity to where the [military] exercise is going, we are expecting that the Russian naval services abide by the anti-collision regulations.” By constantly having their boats in the exercise waters, the fishermen would—peacefully—prevent the Russians from conducting the exercise.

Their action worked. On Jan. 29, Filatov issued a statement announcing that Russia’s defense minister, Sergey Shoigu, had decided, “as a gesture of goodwill, to relocate the exercises by the Russian Navy, planned for February 3-8, outside the Irish exclusive economic zone (EEZ), with the aim not to hinder fishing activities by the Irish vessels in the traditional fishing areas.”

The Irish fishermen didn’t just humiliate Moscow: they also put Western capitals’ deterrence efforts to shame. And they did so by announcing asymmetric deterrence.

(...)

I saw this on one of my whale watching pages on fb. We were worried about the deep diving cetaceans (aswell as anything to do with Russian military in the water which is a given).

EU leaders are expected to discuss and seek to find a common position on Ukraine’s membership application when they gather in Paris next Thursday for an informal summit, officials have said.

Leaders will discuss “timing or the conditions”, with positions currently widely diverging among the 27 capitals.

Georgia and Moldova are also expected to make formal applications “by the end of the week”, EU officials said.

Roman Lytwyniw, 25, who travelled to the Polish town of Przemyśl, near the border with Ukraine, to bring his 80-year-old grandmother back to the UK, said the family had been in limbo for two days, with embassy and Home Official officials unable to help with her visa application.

Lytwyniw, a violinist from London, told the Guardian: “I’m not seeing anything yet from that [announcement]. Yesterday, they told me that I’m going to have to reapply for a visa because we didn’t meet the eligibility requirements.

“I’ve just been to the British embassy here and they’ve told me that the best thing to do would be to travel to either Rzeszow or Warsaw. Because that’s where the nearest visa application centres are.”

A petition calling on the UK government to waive visa requirements for Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion has now been signed by more than 100,000 people.

Maybe India will change her mind when all the students from India stuck in Ukraine are evacuated from the Ukraine....They are very busy with it.

Moldova - very interesting and clearly in self-defense. Their constitution is said to maintain strict neutrality and I read that it prohibited them from joining NATO.

I though Georgia was a Russian possession.

I really want Sweden and especially Finland to get on board, too.

I know this is a bit off-topic... but sometimes a little "delight" is helpful when we are thinking and reading pain all day.

One of my favorite movies of all time .... "Everything Is Illuminated".... Takes place in Ukraine and is pure delight....
Directed by Liev Schreiber, and stars Elijah Wood.... On Amazon for $2.99 right now.

After India became a republic following the end of British rule in 1947, the country had a neutral position — although its founding prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, had a soft spot for Communist Russia.

But India tilted toward the Soviet Union in the 1970s, when it saw the United States providing military and financial support to its archenemy, Pakistan. The Soviets came to India’s aid.

India now relies on Russia for more than 60 percent of its military equipment. And Russia has often voted to support India in international forums, including refraining from criticism of its nuclear weapons tests in the 1990s.

India’s bonds with the United States are the tightest they’ve ever been, increasingly connected by the shared threat in the rise of an aggressive China. India’s spending on military equipment from the United States has gone from nearly zero to about $20 billion in just a little over a decade.

India has been heavily supplied with weaponry from Russia for their constant battle with Pakistan over Kashmir.

They walk a careful line between Russia and the US, far more tenuous than we appreciate.

Germany is planning to deliver a further 2,700 anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine following a volte-face on its previously restrictive stance on exporting lethal weapons, German media reported on Thursday morning.

The shoulder-fired “Strela” surface-to-air rockets, which once belonged to the old arsenal of the National People’s Army of Soviet-controlled East Germany, have been approved for export by Germany’s economic ministry but still await formal approval by the federal security council.

The anti-aircraft missiles follow 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger missiles that the German government announced over the weekend would be dispatched to Ukraine.

In addition, the government of Germany’s chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has green-lighted the delivery of weapons from Netherlands and Estonia that once belonged to East Germany.
