After India became a republic following the end of British rule in 1947, the country had a neutral position — although its founding prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, had a soft spot for Communist Russia.

But India tilted toward the Soviet Union in the 1970s, when it saw the United States providing military and financial support to its archenemy, Pakistan. The Soviets came to India’s aid.

India now relies on Russia for more than 60 percent of its military equipment. And Russia has often voted to support India in international forums, including refraining from criticism of its nuclear weapons tests in the 1990s.

India’s bonds with the United States are the tightest they’ve ever been, increasingly connected by the shared threat in the rise of an aggressive China. India’s spending on military equipment from the United States has gone from nearly zero to about $20 billion in just a little over a decade.

As World Rebukes Russia, India Tries to Stay Above the Fray

Again, humbled by the clarity of history lessons we are all experiencing right now. Thank you.

An advance team left the international criminal court (ICC) in The Hague on Thursday to start investigating possible war crimes in Ukraine, its top prosecutor told Reuters in an interview.

Their departure came hours after the prosecutor Karim Khan said he would start collecting evidence as part of a formal investigation launched after Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began on 24 February.

“Yesterday I formulated a team and today they are moving to the region,” Khan said. “It’s an advanced team, comprised of investigators, lawyers, but also those with particular experience in operational planning.”

Khan said his office would be examining possible war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide – the offences under the court’s jurisdiction – by all parties in the conflict.

Ukraine’s parliament has approved a bill to allow the seizure of assets or property in Ukraine owned by Russia or Russian citizens due to the invasion of Ukraine.

Under the law, the government can suggest which assets to confiscate to the security council, which must then give its approval for their transfer to state ownership, Reuters reported.

A Canadian-Israeli ice hockey player has described his harrowing escape from Ukraine, as foreign athletes in both Ukraine and Russia face life-threatening decisions over whether to stay or go.

Eliezer Sherbatov was with his team, HC Mariupol of the Ukrainian Hockey League, in the Donetsk region last week preparing for a game against Kramatorsk when a bomb exploded outside their hotel.

NATO
‘Cold Response 22 is the largest planned exercise conducted within NATO in 2022.’

This really made me think of Arjen Kamphuis,a famous Dutch hacker, who went missing near Bodø.
Norway - Norway - Arjen Kamphuis, 47, Dutch citizen, Bodø, 20 Aug 2018 - #2

“A significant part of exercise Cold Response 22 will take place in international waters adjacent to Norwegian territory with a large maritime and air presence. The Field Training Exercise will take place between 23 March‐ 30 March. A total force of 35 000 personnel from 25 nations are taking part in the exercise. Due to the pandemic, there are ongoing changes, so this number might change until the start of the exercise.”

Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

This should always be foremost in our thoughts when dealing with Putin

As we are democratic countries...shouldn't there be a referendum so that the "people" can have a say in the choice of intervention by Nato or not.

That's what NATO is for. We rely on them to make well reasoned decisions. While I understand this is an extremely emotional time, we cannot decide the fate of potentially millions of people based on emotions. JMO

Do you think a referendum would be based on emotions....nahhh you are probably right. And people as they are....not digging deep into where this is about and the consequences.

Well-said.

We have to rely on our elected officials. We do have voices to get to them. Use this priviledge given to us by the wise architects of the US Constitution.

And remember that Russia has already been involved in manipulating our elections, and probably always will, unless a massive political upheaveall occurs there.

This must be helping to "get the word out" to the Russians....
When so many are losing their jobs, what is the government telling them????
They'll probably just tell the workers, over state tv, to stay home, that the Russian homeland is being attacked/invaded by the Ukraine and they have to shut down the factories. Yeah that sounds about as logical and believable as all the other stuff Putin and his Foreign Minister Lap Dog Lavrov are spouting.

Also praying for peace. May this be a table at which an opening is found.

That would be the best outcome for all the world. Even better if Putin truly has a brain tumor and just passes on to the netherworld. JMHO

Me, being from Europe, have my own thoughts about the American elections...totally different perspective. Not very much apart from what you writing...but a different feel.

Italian Air Force, Royal ( UK) Air Force, USAF all have big planes up in the border areas of Poland & Romania. French Air Force plane was up there closer to Hungary too, but I don't see it now.

Helicopter drones over the Baltic Sea just south of Moldovan border.

Also noting that Moldova appears to be included in the "no-fly" zone, in observance of their stated neutrality, since the beginning of this conflict

I’m a bit surprised about India, too. No idea what their relations are like with Russia though.

Laos, most heavily bombed/mined country in the world (and the only place I’ve had a gun pointed at me, by a small child no less - just playing with his AK47, as you do!) you’d think they’d get it.

It’s a risk isn’t it, sitting on the fence? Some of those countries are politically unstable and might need UN help in the future.
It seemed odd to me that India abstained from the UN's vote to tell Russia to stop and leave Ukraine. All the Indian online news sites I'm seeing are all pro-Ukraine.
