I'm learning Ukraine history during all this. I had no idea what "Euromaidan" represents.

Kyiv - Kyiv in an independent Ukraine

Another wave of protests rocked Kyiv in 2013–14, when Yanukovych, who had succeeded Yushchenko as president, backed out of a planned association agreement with the European Union at the eleventh hour. Pro-EU demonstrators set up a camp in Maidan Nezalezhnosti (“Independence Square”) and occupied city hall. Scores were killed in February 2014 when police and security forces opened fire on crowds of protesters. Downtown Kyiv became a battlefield, and the buildings surrounding the Maidan were scorched by petrol bombs. Abandoned by his political allies and under threat of impeachment, Yanukovych fled to Russia, and the protesters, dubbed the Euromaidan movement, ushered in a pro-Western government.

A captured Russian said there was a direct order to shoot civilians near Kharkiv. He claimed he was injured by his fellows for warning Ukrainian civilians. This should be independently verified, although there were videos of shot civilians in cars - Служба безпеки України https://t.co/M7ndhZWJeU

What sort of war tactics will Syrian soldiers introduce to the Russian invasion of Ukraine?

⚡️Russia will not use conscript soldiers in Ukraine, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin said in a televised address on Mar. 7.

Putin also claimed there will be “no additional call-up reservists” and that “professionals” fulfilling “fixed objectives” were leading the war.

What professionals? Because so far it's been mostly carnage and violence against innocent civilians. What did the family dog ever do to Putin to deserve being blown up :(

Also adding that Trudeaus' involvement is making me nervous as a Canadian. JMO.

Professionals ...

"Russia is recruiting Syrians and other foreign fighters as it ramps up its assault on Ukraine, the Pentagon has said.

Moscow entered the Syrian civil war in 2015 on the side of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, and the country has been mired in a conflict marked by urban combat for more than a decade.

Now, US Department of Defence officials said, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin was “on a recruiting mission” seeking to bring some of those fighters into the fray in Ukraine, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“We do believe that the accounts of them – the Russians – seeking Syrian fighters to augment their forces in Ukraine, we believe there’s truth to that,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told journalists when asked about the reports."

My opinion is the stalled convoy out of Kyiv is a set up and has been for Russian news to creep into the mainstream. Also, surprised that the US had 100,000 servicemen stationed in surrounding countries. Amazing, I've heard 4500 here, 8000 there but wow, 100,000. I'm not sure if I feel better or have fear. Much more security than expected. jmo

Professionals: at taking out civilians, some of whom seem unsure of why they are even in Ukraine
Fixed objectives: Military, Civilians, Nuclear Facilities, Apartment Buildings, etc.
IMO

On a slightly different note.

From earlier:
US State Department: Russian embassy's claim is "a flat out lie"
The tweet, posted Monday, claimed that Russia's military actions aimed "to stop any war that could take place on Ukrainian territory or that could start from there,” quoting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

US State Department Spokesman Ned Price responded on Twitter, saying: “This is a flat out lie. Russia’s special military operation is instigating a war in Ukraine. Ukraine does not want a war. #StopTheLies.”

Be cautious with numbers like that. When Afghanistan was evacuating, the USA took credit for efforts from several countries. There might be 100,000 servicemen, but are they all USA.

"Since January 2019, Canada and the United Kingdom share the role of NATO Contact Point Embassy (CPE) in Kyiv. CPEs support NATO’s partnership and public diplomacy activities in partner countries. Canada also supports the NATO-Ukraine Joint Working Group on Defence Reform through the delivery of language training, staff officer training and peacekeeping training for Ukrainian military and civilian personnel."

I'm not sure. I've just read it several times today on 100k. If it's a combined effort then that might be even better.

from NPR article dated Feb 4th. snipped by me
How many U.S. troops are in Europe, and where in Europe are they stationed?
About 70,000 U.S. troops are permanently stationed in Europe.
Germany hosts about half of them,
In addition to the permanent troops, an additional 7,000 U.S. troops are in Europe on shorter rotational deployments as part of a NATO support mission called Atlantic Resolve. That includes an aviation division with 85 helicopters and an armored division with artillery and tanks. Those troops are headquartered in Poznan, Poland.
The Harry S. Truman carrier strike group has been in the Mediterranean Sea since December. This week, the aircraft carrier was in the Adriatic Sea conducting joint exercises with NATO.

In Ukraine itself, there is minimal U.S. military presence. Permanently deployed troops are limited primarily to the military attaché and Marine guards at the American Embassy in Kyiv. About 150 members of the Florida National Guard are in western Ukraine on a previously scheduled training rotation.

Explaining the U.S. military presence in Europe as 2,000 more troops deploy

I checked and found the following dated Feb 12th about the US troops in Ukraine mentioned in the above article.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/12/pentagon-orders-departure-of-us-troops-in-ukraine.html
The Pentagon ordered all U.S. troops in Ukraine to leave the country and reposition elsewhere in Europe.

IIRC — only 15,000 of those 100,000 have been sent in response to the war. The other troops were already stationed at various US military bases throughout Europe (of which there are MANY) on permanent or temporary assignments. Many US bases are also NATO-led with forces from multiple countries present.

ETA: 500 more U.S. troops deploying to Europe as Russia’s war on Ukraine continues

Deployed troops include:

An unspecified number KC-135 Stratotankers to Souda Bay, Greece, with 150 airmen from Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, WA

Air support operations to Romania and Poland with 40 troops from Fort Stewart, Georgia

300 soldiers from an ordnance company out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and a maintenance company from Fort Stewart, Georgia to support 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, who left for Germany beginning Feb. 27

The 500 troops [reported on today] are part of a commitment of 7,000 that the Defense Department announced on Feb. 25.

The move brings the total of U.S. troops activated to support NATO countries, or specifically as part of the NATO Response Force, since February to 14,500. They are spread out from Estonia at the northern end of NATO’s border down to Romania.

I wonder whether it is NATO that has a lot of servicemen stationed at NATO countries bordering Ukraine. Based on USA numbers that we have, could it be NATO forces rather than USA servicemen?

"The US has placed 8,500 troops on heightened alert to deploy to Europe as Nato reinforced its eastern borders with warships and fighter jets
...

In recent months Russia has massed more than 106,000 troops along Ukraine’s border and it is planning extensive military exercises in neighbouring Belarus and in the Mediterranean.
...

The Kremlin has also dispatched six amphibious landing ships to the Mediterranean as part of the exercises, which will include 140 ships and more than 10,000 Russian troops.

US puts 8,500 troops on heightened alert amid fears over Ukraine

"President Joe Biden has repeatedly insisted U.S. troops will not fight in Ukraine, but he has redoubled defenses in surrounding countries by moving roughly 14,000 troops eastward in Europe during the past three weeks.
