NATO exercises in Norway began February 28th . Since this is a training exercise I do not think the troop numbers would not be included in troop deployment or permanently stationed numbers.

Cold Response 2022: 35,000 Soldiers from 26 Countries in Northern Military Exercise
Facts about Cold Response 2022
  • Cold Response is a Norwegian-led series of military exercises organized every other year with NATO allied and partner countries. The 2022 edition will take place in March and April under the command of the Joint Operation Headquarters in Bodø.
  • 35,000 soldiers from 26 countries (including Norway) will participate. This will thus be the largest Norwegian-led exercise on Norwegian territory since the 1980s. Trident Juncture 2018 was nevertheless the largest exercise in Norwegian territory since the 1980s, though under joint NATO command.
  • The 23 NATO countries sending forces to the exercise are the USA, Canada, Denmark, Great Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Germany, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia. In addition, the partner countries Finland and Sweden will participate.
  • Allied forces have arrived in Norway ever since the fall of 2021 to train and prepare before the exercise.
  • The exercise will take place in Northern, Central and Southeasten Norway, with emphasis in the North. In the North, the exercise will play out from Bodø to Porsangermoen.

Be cautious with numbers like that. When Afghanistan was evacuating, the USA took credit for efforts from several countries. There might be 100,000 servicemen, but are they all USA.

"Since January 2019, Canada and the United Kingdom share the role of NATO Contact Point Embassy (CPE) in Kyiv. CPEs support NATO’s partnership and public diplomacy activities in partner countries. Canada also supports the NATO-Ukraine Joint Working Group on Defence Reform through the delivery of language training, staff officer training and peacekeeping training for Ukrainian military and civilian personnel."
Canada’s engagement in Ukraine

Yes, the UK has a leading role with NATO's efforts in Europe. If you add in the 70-100,000 US service people, the Canadian and other presence, and local presence, there are a significant amount of armed services in Europe.

"The UK is Europe’s largest contributor to NATO. We have deployed more troops to NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence than any other Ally, and HMS Prince of Wales leads the Alliance’s Maritime High Readiness Force."

From Reuters July 31, 2020

Poland currently hosts a rotating contingent of over 4,000 U.S. troops. A permanent presence, which the statement says will now number at least 5,500 troops, is likely to cost Poland more.

U.S. to have permanent troop presence in Poland as defence pact agreed

Interesting. From your link ... in July 2020, Poland requested an additional 1000 NATO or USA troops, bringing the number to 5000 or 5500, and fees were the issue, but they got the troops - probably transferred from Germany.

"The U.S. military on Wednesday expanded on plans to withdraw about 12,000 troops from Germany and indicated that some of them could be moved to Poland or the Baltic states."

‘No better than North Korea’: Russian aviation faces wipeout | Russia-Ukraine war News | Al Jazeera
''Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has resulted in its airlines being banned from European, American and Canadian airspace, left the country with leased aircraft it cannot use, and scuttled aerospace industry partnerships with the West.

Russian citizens won’t be flying to Europe or North America anytime soon, with even flights to friendly countries such as China in doubt due to the international community’s ostracisation of the country’s aviation sector, according to aviation analysts.''

“Russia will be the world’s largest country with a developed economy and an aviation industry no better than North Korea’s,” Richard Aboulafia, managing director of Michigan-based AeroDynamic Advisory, told Al Jazeera.

Aviation sanctions are easy to enforce,” said Aboulafia, who has more than 30 years of experience in the aviation industry. “Airlines can’t fly. They will have to completely redo their aircraft plans, which at the moment, are built on Western technology.”

Interim summary

Here’s where things stand:
  • Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the United Nations, just slammed Russia and accused Vladimir Putin of having a plan “to brutalize Ukraine”, as the UN tries to negotiate evacuation corridors.
  • But Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, was in the UN Security Council chamber in New York, with a different message, claiming Ukrainians are shelling themselves.
  • The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine is deepening as Russian forces intensify their shelling and food, water, heat and medicine grow increasingly scarce, with Ukraine accusing Moscow of ‘medieval’ tactics.
  • A third round of conflict talks between Ukraine and Russia ended with “small positive developments” relating to potential humanitarian corridors, according to reports, but there were no details and the veracity of anything offered by Russia is in doubt.

Sounds like the Russians targeted a joint USA/Ukraine portion of the nuclear facility that they attacked.

"IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi on Monday told a press conference that Russia's military assault on Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station led to the destruction of a neutron generator in one of the facilities on the campus.
...

However, he then tried to assure those present that the situation would not be a new Chernobyl-style disaster, saying, "the neutron generator facility had a very small inventory. It was a subcritical facility to use neutrons for scientific experiments."

"It was a relatively new one [facility], part of an operation between the US and Ukraine from the Obama administration. It was a scientific institute," he said."

Disgusting. Putin has created more refugees in Europe than any other leader since Hiitler, WW II. And Germany just ignores the crisis?

And I agree, Putin has pushed the EU and US/UN before with Crimea, since no one said a word, it was like a bully realizing he can continue to do what he wants with no consequences. We created the monster, by our previous inaction.

And China is Putin's buddy. We should stop all imports from China as well.

I found a few sources about the problem of Germany's reliance on Russian oil and natural gas (when the term 'gas' is used in reference to most countries in the world, it refers to natural gas, rather than gasoline or petroleum. Natural gas is widely used in Europe for heating, cooking, industry, and electricity generation.)

Crisis deepens, Ukraine accuses Moscow of 'medieval' tactics | AP News
The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine deepened Monday ...

A third round of talks between the two sides ended with a top Ukrainian official saying there had been minor, unspecified progress toward establishing safe corridors ...

[...]

Well into the second week of the invasion, with Russian troops making significant advances in southern Ukraine but stalled in some other regions, a top U.S. official said multiple countries were discussing whether to provide the warplanes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been pleading for.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces continued to pummel cities with rockets, and fierce fighting raged in places. In the face of the bombardments, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces were showing unprecedented courage.

“The problem is that for one soldier of Ukraine, we have 10 Russian soldiers, and for one Ukrainian tank, we have 50 Russian tanks,” Zelenskyy told ABC News in an interview that aired Monday night. He noted that the gap in forces was diminishing and that even if Russian forces “come into all our cities,” they will be met with an insurgency.

[...]

Hospitals in Mariupol are facing severe shortages of antibiotics and painkillers, and doctors performed some emergency procedures without them.

[...]

In the capital, Kyiv, soldiers and volunteers have built hundreds of checkpoints to protect the city of nearly 4 million, often using sandbags, stacked tires and spiked cables. Some barricades looked significant, with heavy concrete slabs and sandbags piled more than two stories high, while others appeared more haphazard, with hundreds of books used to weigh down stacks of tires.

[...]

“I think it struck the fourth floor under us,” Dmitry Sedorenko said from his Kharkiv hospital bed. “Immediately, everything started burning and falling apart.” When the floor collapsed beneath him, he crawled out through the third story, past the bodies of some of his neighbors.

[...]

In the Irpin area, which has been cut off from electricity, water and heat for three days, witnesses saw at least three tanks and said Russian soldiers were seizing houses and cars.

[...]

At The Hague, Netherlands, Ukraine pleaded with the International Court of Justice to order a halt to Russia’s invasion, saying Moscow is committing widespread war crimes.

Russia “is resorting to tactics reminiscent of medieval siege warfare, encircling cities, cutting off escape routes and pounding the civilian population with heavy ordnance,” said Jonathan Gimblett, a member of Ukraine’s legal team.

Russia snubbed the court proceedings, leaving its seats in the Great Hall of Justice empty.

[...]

Zelenskyy has called for more punitive measures against Russia, including a global boycott of its oil exports, which are key to its economy.

“If (Russia) doesn’t want to abide by civilized rules, then they shouldn’t receive goods and services from civilization,” he said in a video address.

[...]

While the West has been rushing weapons to Ukraine such as anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, some officials fear that sending warplanes could be seen by Moscow as direct involvement in the war.

One possible scenario under discussion: Former Soviet bloc nations that are now NATO members could send Ukraine their own Soviet-era MiGs, which Ukrainian pilots are trained to fly, and the U.S. would then replace those countries’ aircraft with American-made F-16s.

That's Russia's narrative - Russians must rescue Ukrainians from the tyrannical Nazi government that is bombing its own people.

So the EU says it might ban Russian oil and Russia says it might cut off the oil? Same difference. The EU should make a deal with Canada - where oil is abundant without the environmental risk of fracking.

Thank you! I finally understand the F16 trade-offs. Soviet fighter jets were left in former Soviet countries. Ukraine pilots know how to fly Russian jets. Former soviet countries will give their fighter jets to Ukraine. NATO will replace those planes with F16s.
