⚡️ Putin signs decree restricting export, import of goods.

Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin has signed a decree prohibiting the import and export of products and raw materials to certain countries. The list of countries will be published within 48 hours.

Do you think he may withhold oil and natural gas for Europe? It would hurt him financially, but he is already down. I am wondering where his mind is, and if he may be looking for ways to bring others to their knees with him.

I'm thinking he may ban the US. Try to make it look like it was his idea. JMO

Unsure on the timeline in this. I think the number of children who have perished is cumulative, while the houses in Malyn is new. Not sure. JMO

Russian invaders killed 52 Ukrainian kids, mostly by air bombing and shelling of residential areas, president Zelenskyy said. Today Russian bombs destroyed 7 houses in Malyn, a condominium in Zhytomyr, several houses in Dinets, killing dozens of people. Rescuers continue working. https://t.co/gq0C0RbsLK

It's one very large and populated country though.
Things may change in the near future. My son, his husband and my daughter now drive electric cars. They purchase solar panels for their homes so they are now all electric (one has a natural gas cooktop) and no longer purchase an gas for vehicles. They charge their vehicles with the power that the solar generates. We live in the desert so sunshine is plentiful!
My son drives about 60 miles to work and 60 miles back daily. His husband drives a bit farther back and forth. Their savings are huge with the solar. My daughter works from home but still wanted to do the environmentally right thing.

That’s amazing! Wish we had the sunshine for solar (some houses have panels but it’s not that prevalent round here, don’t know if that’s weather related though).

Bring on summer! We all need it so badly, not least in Ukraine where, right now, it’s well below freezing at night.

Someone I listened to on the radio (I believe ex-US intelligence who spoke to Russian intelligence) stated that the policy of Russia is governed by the idea that if your neighbor’s house is better than yours, instead of building up your own, burn the neighbor’s down.

This mindset is how I understand it, too. Russia can’t stand the fact Ukraine has flourished since they split up 30 years ago. Jealous and vengeful.

McDonald's is temporarily closing Russian restaurants - CNN

"McDonald's has decided to temporarily close all our restaurants in Russia and pause all operations in the market," CEO Chris Kempczinski said in a statement Tuesday.
There were 847 locations of McDonald's in Russia at the close of last year, according to an investor document.

There is a pic here of people lining up (in Russia) for their last McDonalds meal before they close their outlets.

- Pentagon response to Poland's proposal on jets: "We will continue to consult with Poland and our other NATO allies about this issue and the difficult logistical challenges it presents, but we do not believe Poland’s proposal is a tenable one.”

“departing from a U.S./NATO base in Germany to fly into airspace that is contested with Russia over Ukraine raises serious concerns for the entire NATO alliance…simply not clear there is substantive rationale.”

This is interesting to me as that’s how it started - there were still long queues outside McD’s a year after it opened in Moscow. We were desperate to go (hotel food was pretty bleak - things like a tiny fish in a block of aspic, and lots of borscht) but there wasn’t time to wait around.

When it opened the previous year, in January 1990, they expected 1,000 customers but around 30,000 Muscovites got their first taste of the west that day. More details and photos here: The First McDonald’s In Moscow Opened In 1990, And These 27 Pics Show How Insane It All Was

I’m sure many of us wake up worried about Ukraine every morning. Wondering what horror happened over night.

Every morning, one of the first things I've been doing is checking the news to see if Putin has killed Zelenskyy yet.

I'm actually amazed that he and his cabinet are still alive.

Now that Zelenskyy has returned to his office and revealed his whereabouts to the world, I'm just holding my breath. Putin always tries to exterminate his enemies, especially when they make him look bad in public.

And I peek through my fingers watching the news to see what new group of civilians this butcher has massacred, and which innocuous town has been destroyed.

Wonder what reason has been given for this, along with Starbucks, Coke, Ikea. Also the suspension of MasterCard, Visa and American Express, limited airlines servicing Russia, no money in the ATM's...no social media, no independent news. I'm sure the Russian people are being fed a line of bull over it all, but surely, hopefully, they don't all believe most of the world is simply picking on them.

NATO chief warns Russia away from attacking supply lines supporting Ukraine | CBC News
''NATO's secretary general has warned that a Russian attack on the supply lines of allied nations supporting Ukraine with arms and munitions would be a dangerous escalation of the war raging in eastern Europe.

Jens Stoltenberg made the remarks Tuesday in an interview with CBC News as he, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the leaders of Spain and Latvia visited NATO's base and training range at Adazi, outside Latvia's capital Riga.

"The allies are helping Ukraine uphold their right for self defence, which is enshrined in the UN charter," Stoltenberg said after a meeting with Trudeau, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Latvian Prime Minister Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš at the Adazi base.

"Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine is defending itself. If there is any attack against any NATO country, NATO territory, that will trigger Article 5."

''Article 5 is the self-defence clause in NATO's founding treaty which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all 30 member nations.

"I'm absolutely convinced President Putin knows this
and we are removing any room for miscalculation, misunderstanding about our commitment to defend every inch of NATO territory," Stoltenberg said''

The World Health Organization today warned that attacks on Ukrainian hospitals, ambulances and other health care facilities have increased “rapidly” in recent days and vital medical supplies are running low.

The UN agency on Monday confirmed at least nine people had died in 16 attacks on health care facilities since the start of a Russian invasion, reports Reuters, but it did not say who was responsible.

Among the supplies running low are oxygen, insulin, PPE, surgical supplies and blood products.

Probably just as many of us who are sitting here ruing the fact that NATO is sitting back and talking the talk vice walking the walk. We are a "defensive organization", so as a non-NATO country, Ukraine gets to suffer. The fact that we troops are sitting on our hinies watching a genocide occurring and allowing such to happen, while wringing our collective hands in despair, is offensive to a fair number of us.

Obviously, Russia is NOT deterred - that's a NATO FAIL.

NATO is an alliance of 30 countries to protect each other. Each country pays fees, commits to joint training, troops, aircraft., to protect each member.

Its not an organization to protect all.

NATO is walking a fine line and any aggression towards Russian troops that are NOT occupying NATO countries, will be consider an act of war.

I believe Putin would pull the trigger on a nuclear warheads, in a heartbeat.

Additionally from WHO:

Donors making a difference: In Ukraine emergency
8 March 2022

“WHO has issued an appeal for funding to support Ukraine’s health services and care for the country’s refugees”

[...]

“Supported by donors, WHO takes prompt action to bolster health services in Ukraine
WHO has sent large shipments of medical supplies to Ukraine and released US$ 5.2 million from its Contingency Fund for Emergencies to respond to the country’s urgent health needs.

WHO shipments have arrived in Poland bearing 76 metric tonnes of emergency health supplies bound for Ukraine. The shipments included supplies for surgery, trauma and health care, along with freezers, refrigerators, ice packs and cool boxes.

“WHO is on the ground, working with our partners to respond, to assess the impact of the conflict on the health of Ukraine’s people and its health system and to deliver essential medical supplies from our hub in Dubai,” WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said last week as the crisis unfolded.

WHO is also exploring solutions to maintain the country’s supply of medical oxygen and other life-saving treatments, amid disrupted supply lines.

The money in WHO’s Contingency Fund for Emergencies comes from 24 donor countries whose pooled contributions allow WHO to respond quickly to disease outbreaks and emergencies – often within the first 24 hours, a critical time in a crisis. Created in 2015, the Fund is one of WHO’s most powerful tools for responding in acute health emergencies.

[...]

“Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (WHO Director General) and Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge (Director of the WHO Regional European Office) have called for critical medical supplies to safely reach those who need them and are working with partners to establish safe transit for shipments through Poland.

“The oxygen supply situation is nearing a very dangerous point in Ukraine,” the two leaders said in a joint statement on 27 February. “Trucks are unable to transport oxygen supplies from plants to hospitals across the country, including the capital Kyiv. The majority of hospitals could exhaust their oxygen reserves within the next 24 hours. Some have already run out. This puts thousands of lives at risk.”

The joint statement notes that medical oxygen is crucial for patients with COVID-19, injuries, trauma, sepsis, complications of childbirth and numerous other conditions.”

I understand your points fully. I just don't agree with them. It is the west's failure to utilize clean oil in the first place (ie: using a dictator's oil in the first place) that causes this current conundrum. Those places chose to use a dictatorial regime's oil because it is cheap.

Those decisions will cost the free world in the long run, and are costing Ukraine now. Cut off their funding ... or sit back, fund them via those oil & gas sales and watch this war expand in scale - because it will (if it hasn't already - see Lukashenko's map posted by me earlier with Moldova, yet another sovereign nation, clearly targeted for invasion on it).

My .02 cents worth.

The West buys less than 8% of our oil from Russian.

I think the European countries are very dependant on Russian oil and gas.

US imports from Canada with the Atlantic pipeline. We also produce and have a very rich oil supply in Alaska, via pipeline, and Texas. We have increased our solar and wind energy supply.

It would be interesting to know what the Russian people think, the things they cannot say.

Most opinions that have been quoted reflect disappointment, and then switch to saying that maybe people will start buying Russian items now and it will be good for their economy. They don't mention the conflict.

Shopping in a Moscow pharmacy, interior designer Pyotr Loznitsa says he has lost many clients over the past several days. 'Everything closing down'
"In Iran, they too adapted" to sanctions, Loznitsa says.

"Russian brands can be a replacement. Maybe the sanctions will be good for the Russian market," Filippova says.

Russians brace for sanctions as their favourite shops close

..... with growing numbers of foreign firms distancing themselves from the giant Russian market due to the war in Ukraine – homegrown jobs look safer and more stable.

"Right now, I mean last week, I feel that it’s necessary to cut expenses and save at least some money, to build up a financial cushion,” said one Moscow resident, referring to the 11-day-old war without mentioning it outright.

“Businesses could be closed for some time,” she explained, as supply links with companies abroad are unstable or currently cut off. “So we need to hedge our risks for now.”

One of her friends, however, pointed to a possible silver lining, saying the situation could open up opportunities for Russian producers and that some interesting Russian brands could emerge.
