Some of my colleagues at the hospital and I were discussing this possibility/probability on Tuesday. This article is from Friday, but presumably confirms the sad truth. These beautiful, resilient souls have managed to flee...some, unfortunately into the arms of simply another breed of evil.

“As millions of women and children flee across Ukraine's borders in the face of Russian aggression, concerns are growing over how to protect the most vulnerable refugees from becoming victims of human traffickers or other forms of exploitation.

(...)

Police in Wrocław, Poland, said on Thursday they detained a 49-year-old suspect on rape charges after he allegedly assaulted a 19-year-old Ukrainian refugee he lured with offers of help over the internet.

(...)

Police in Berlin warned women and children in a post on social media in Russian and Ukrainian against accepting offers of overnight stays, and urged them to report anything suspicious.”

Can't read this Telegraph article in full as it's paywalled but the headline and intro alone are chilling...

The symbol of pride in Vladimir Putin's invasion in Ukraine is being used as a warning to anti-war protesters

U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, who is due to meet with China's top diplomat Yang Jiechi in Rome on Monday, warned Beijing that it would "absolutely" face consequences if it helped Moscow evade sweeping sanctions over the war in Ukraine.

The spokesperson for China's embassy in Washington responded to media reports on Sunday that Moscow had asked Beijing for military equipment since launching its invasion of Ukraine by saying, "I've never heard of that."

HA! If there were truth on every diplomat's tongue.....

I put this in the same category as Russia's spokesperson saying they're not targeting civilians. Just "liberating" Ukraine.

I would love to hear how everyone feels about what, if anything, should be done. I just don’t know. I want to know what each person here thinks.
Hi @gitana1 In response to your ask... I doubt Putin imagined the Ukrainian resistance. But, because of his fervor, I think Putin has passed the proverbial Rubicon in his war against Ukraine. I think the U.S. needs to do whatever is necessary to protect Ukraine and Europe. If sanctions fail, (and I believe Putin can't be deterred by sanctions) then what else is left but military action.

The Zaporozhye regional administration says a new mayor has been installed in the Ukrainian city of Melitopol, which is under Russian military control, after the elected mayor was detained on Friday.

The newly installed mayor is Galina Danilchenko, a former member of the city council,Danilchenko, who was not elected by the people, was introduced as the acting mayor on local TV, the statement said.

In her televised statement, which was posted by the administration on Telegram, Danilchenko said her "main task is to take all necessary steps to get the city back to normal."

She claimed there were people still in Melitopol who would try to destabilize "the situation and provoke a reaction of bad behavior."

"I ask you to keep your wits about you and not to give in to these provocations," Danilchenko said. "I appeal to the deputies, elected by the people, on all levels. Since you were elected by the people, it is your duty to care about the well-being of your citizens."

Danilchenko proposed the creation of a "People's Choice Committee" to "solve all the critical issues for Melitopol and the Melitopol region."

Of course SHE was not elected by the people. Have to note the undemocratic actions going on in case anyone thinks a “deal” will work.

Could not agree more. Don’t know if anyone here reads or follows Julia Ioffe. I love to listen to her as a straight talking plain spoken Russia expert. She has also been consistent in her views and I have no clue what her politics are.

I consider her an expert and her latest interview just left me chilled. Her view is Putin has never been more dangerous. I fear she’s right & we’re “discussing” when we need to be acting.

Several British MPs are calling on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to kick out the children of oligarchs who are being educated at the UK's elite institutions.

"Putin's princelings are enjoying education in the finest places of our country while he destroys Ukrainian schools"

"Why should the children of Putin's cronies benefit from an education in this country when Ukrainian children are being murdered?"

The heirs to some of Russia's largest fortunes are rebelling against Vladimir Putin's war
I agree and believe their children should be fighting in the war. See how fast it stops...

It is certainly boiling down to Putin against the world IMO. The madness continues…

Excerpt from the intro before it hits paywall:

Russian prosecutors have issued warnings to Western companies in Russia, threatening to arrest corporate leaders there who criticize the government or to seize assets of companies that withdraw from the country, according to people familiar with the matter.
——
Companies included Coca Cola, McDonalds, P&G, IBM, YUM Brands (KFC), and I am guessing many others.

Russia-Ukraine war latest news: Zelenskiy urges Nato to implement no-fly zone after air base attack near Polish border | World news | The Guardian

British prime minister Boris Johnson has announced that the government will donate more than 500 mobile generators to Ukraine to help provide power for key buildings such as hospitals, shelters and water treatment plants.

The UK government has set up a new Ukraine electricity network support taskforce, including many of the leading power suppliers. They will provide the generators from their stocks, with many expected to be delivered via neighbouring countries. In total, they should provide enough power for 20,000 homes or equivalent buildings.

The prime minister said: “We are seeing the tragic consequences in Ukraine from [Vladimir] Putin’s grave mistake every day, and we will continue to do everything we can to support Ukraine’s resistance against this illegal invasion through economic, diplomatic and humanitarian measures, as well as providing defensive military equipment.

“We will now be sending generators to ease the difficulties caused by the current power outages and help keep vital services running so the people of Ukraine can continue to defend their country.”

A bit more info from another link:

The warnings have prompted at least one of the targeted companies to limit communications between its Russian business and the rest of the company, out of concern that emails or text messages among colleagues may be intercepted, one of the people said. Other companies have moved to transfer executives out of Russia, another one of the people said.
