Why the heck not? Why are we pandering? Of course the removal of Putin would change the fate of this conflict. IMO.

This is what I wonder. Are we sure? There surely is a group supporting him, probably a couple of old “grey cardinals”. How do we know that they are different?

Zelenskiy calls on US and Europe to supply planes and tanks
In his nightly address to the Ukrainian people and the world, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has called on the US and Europe to supply more planes, tanks, anti-missiles defences and anti-ship weaponry, arguing that Europe’s own security was at stake.

[...]

Referring to those who are defending the besieged port city of Mariupol, he continued:

I wish at least a percentage of their courage to those who have been thinking for 31 days how to transfer a dozen or two of planes or tanks ...

Ukraine cannot shoot down Russian missiles using shotguns, machine guns, which are too much in supplies.

And it is impossible to unblock Mariupol without a sufficient number of tanks, other armored vehicles and, of course, aircraft. All defenders of Ukraine know that. All defenders of Mariupol know that. Thousands of people know that - citizens, civilians who are dying there in the blockade.

The United States knows that. All European politicians know. We told everyone. And this should be known as soon as possible by as many people on Earth as possible. So that everyone understands who and why was simply afraid to prevent this tragedy. Afraid to simply make a decision.”

Here’s a bit more from Ukrainian president Zelenskiy’s speech earlier, in which he warned Russia its invasion was only working to “derussify” Ukraine, where Russian is widely spoken.

By the way, we talked today with our military in Mariupol, with our heroes who defend this city, in Russian,” said the president, himself a native Russian speaker.

“Because there is no language problem in Ukraine and there never was.

But now you, the Russian occupiers, are creating this problem. You are doing everything to make our people stop speaking Russian themselves. Because the Russian language will be associated with you. Only with you.

With these explosions and killings. With your crimes. You are deporting our people. You are bullying our teachers, forcing them to repeat everything after your propagandists. You are taking our mayors and Ukrainian activists hostage. You are placing billboards in the occupied territories with appeals (they appeared today) not to be afraid to speak Russian.

Just think about what it means. Where Russian has always been a part of everyday life, like Ukrainian, in the east of our state, and where you are turning peaceful cities into ruins today.

Russia itself is doing everything to ensure that de-russification takes place on the territory of our state. You are doing it. In one generation. And forever. This is another manifestation of your suicide policy.”

This article from Medusa.io is in Russian, but I shall translate it.
https://meduza.io/feature/2022/03/26/otkazyvatsya-ubivat-lyudey-ne-prestuplenie

“To refuse killing people is not a crime”.

Twelve fighters of OMON (special purpose police units) refused to be sent to Ukraine and were fired. Now they took matters to court. The motivation? “It is not a war there, not an excessive situation, merely a “special operation”, as we were told” (in Russia one can’t call Ukraine invasion “a war”, it is just a “special operation”. So these young men refused to go, citing that the special operation gave them the choice).

“On March 24, Pavel Chikov, a lawyer for the international human rights group Agora, said that 12 riot policemen of the Russian Guard from Krasnodar, who were on exercises in Crimea, refused to follow the commander’s order and did not go to war in Ukraine. After that, the National Guard was fired - however, they decided to challenge this decision and demand to reinstate them in the service through the courts. Their interests are represented by Krasnodar lawyer Mikhail Benyash. Meduza spoke to him about the case and its possible consequences.”

“When and under what conditions were your clients fired? - On February 25, my clients were going to be sent to the territory of Ukraine, but they refused to leave the territory of Crimea. The check has begun. On March 1, an order was received to terminate the contract due to non-fulfillment of the order. They [the National Guard] thought about it and decided to reinstate through court. In general, there are more laid-offs, but so far 12 people have contacted us. Do they have legal grounds to get reinstated? How obligatory for them to participate in the "special operation"?

If there was an armed conflict, an emergency or a martial law was introduced, terms of the contract could be changed without their consent for six months. But we don’t have an armed conflict or a war there at all, but simply a “special operation”. The law says nothing about it. You can go there, but only if you agree.”

- What a beauty.

- The authorities themselves started - by not calling it armed conflict. Which war you have chosen, that one you’ll receive. This means that consent is required from everyone who goes there, and it is not worth threatening him. And if this is still an armed conflict, question number two immediately arises: who started it? Oops. And no one wants to answer this question, because there is a completely different qualification of actions - and not [actions] of a warrior. Therefore, it will not be recognized as a developing armed conflict.

- What will put pressure on the refuseniks later?

- Publicity put more pressure on them. People have been wearing masks and helmets all their lives, and now they have gotten names and surnames. It is very traumatic for them. Despite the fact that they have done an act approved by part of society, another part verbally poisons them.

- That is, if you have cases of reinstatement, this may be a precedent, after which contract soldiers can massively refuse to participate in "special operations"?

“They are already refusing en masse. They just feared that it was unexpected. And now they will know that there are legal grounds for this.”

‘White Phosphorus’ Claimed To Be Used In Ukraine May Really Be Russian Napalm Weapon

White phosphorus...

..."However, it is also an effective antipersonnel weapon: it sticks to the skin and keeps burning. As Human Rights Watch notes, it is notorious for the depth and severity of the burns it causes and is also toxic, so victims may die of organ failure even if they survive their burns."...

Thermite Incendiary Submunitions...

..."This incendiary rocket was specifically designed as an antipersonnel weapon."...

..."The magnesium burns briefly with a bright white light, the fire mixture produces a longer-lasting flame, and typically sticks to the target while burning. Attempting to scrape the mix off just spreads it, and it is not extinguished by water."...

..."this isn't White Phosphorus, these are thermite incendiary submunitions which are in fact even worse. we've seen similar footage of these unguided 9M22S incendiary Grad rockets in use by the Russians in Syria countless times before"...

..."Each 140-pound rocket covers about 250 feet by 250 feet with flaming projectiles, so a whole 40-rocket barrage will hit a large area."...

..."The use of the weapon in the current invasion no great surprise, as it had previously been identified in Eastern Ukraine in 2014."..."and Syria"...

..."The use of such weapons in cities is another indication of Russia’s willingness to ratchet up the levels of destruction, destroying apartment blocks and causing mass casualties. This serves no military purpose, but aims to demoralize the civilian population and undermine their will to fight. Bombarding cities cannot win the war, but at present it seems to be the only tactic the Russians have left."

For one head of a country to actively call for another head of country's overthrow is a slippery slope. He can say he's not worthy of his office but asking for his removal is calling for action. So the President of the US would be soliciting the removal of anther country's leader and the US is not officially at war with that country.

I know it sounds like yeah so what but it's a line. I mean Biden did call Putin a "butcher" the same day in Poland after meeting Ukrainian refugees.

I agree. It was essential that the White House clarify that statement because it flirted with crossing a line.

Then what happens to Georgia and Moldova? Are they next? Putin might very well decide to take them before they are accepted into the EU like they want to be, like Ukraine has wanted also. I don't think there's any agreement without Putin leaving Ukraine.

Is it really expected that abducting hundreds of thousands of Ukraines from Mariupol, supposedly 85,000 of them children, after pretty much scorning the earth there, will that just be allowed? Is Ukraine expected to just forget and give Putin his strip of land (Mariupol and adjacent land) connecting Crimea and Dombas?

Is there any agreeing with a maniacal murdering dictator? I don't know unfortunately I don't think there can be.

AJMO

I get that sentiment, but Georgia and Moldova do not have large populations that are trying to secede from those nations.

Here in the US, it's easy for me to call for others to sacrifice their lives since my life is still safe.

But, I have to consider the lives of Ukrainians. And, in my opinion, they would be well served by Zelensky negotiating an agreement with Putin to give up the Donbas and not block water to Crimea in exchange for an assurance of peace.

I don't really think it's necessary to promise that Ukraine will not join NATO, because NATO has made it clear they are not welcome.

I do wish Zelensky would quit trying to draw other nations into this war. I get it that he wants support--and, who knows? In his position, I might do the same thing--but, I think it's dangerous to the world at large.

I'm seeing a lot of brinkmanship, and I'm hoping cooler heads continue to prevail.

I agree with you. It's awful and it's heartbreaking to watch. I posted upthread the American people have given 2 billion dollars towards the war in Ukraine. That's just the US.

The difference in this war, in my opinion, is now it's being fought in the media. So many other wars going on right now across the globe that don't have this kind of attention.

Sadly, this is nothing new in Ukraine. It's an escalation. :(

Biden says Putin 'cannot remain in power' in speech about war in Ukraine | CBC News
''U.S. President Joe Biden said that Russia's leader Vladimir Putin "cannot remain in power" in Poland Saturday, remarks a White House official said later were meant to prepare the world's democracies for extended conflict over Ukraine, not back regime change in Russia.

Biden's comments on Saturday, including a statement earlier in the day calling Putin a "butcher," were a sharp escalation of the U.S. approach to Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

In a major address delivered at Warsaw's Royal Castle, Biden evoked Poland's four decades behind the Iron Curtain in an effort to build a case that the world's democracies must urgently confront an autocratic Russia as a threat to global security and freedom.''

"For God's sake, this man cannot remain in power," Biden told a crowd in Warsaw after condemning Putin's month-long war in Ukraine.''
It makes me wonder if their is a secret military operation being puttin’ forth to take someone out. Ordinarily I would not wish this on anyone but desperate times call for desperate measures!

Snipped by me...

"...negotiating an agreement with Putin to give up the Donbas and not block water to Crimea in exchange for an assurance of peace."

Dombas region has basically been under Russian control since 2014. Didn't Russia just conscripted peoples from there to send to front lines? It's the land bridge (Mariupol) from Dombas to Crimea that's been Putin's objective since he realized he couldn't roll over the rest of Ukraine. IMO So he decided to obliterate all the residents and their homes, leaving nothing to come back to.

What of Mariupol? What of it's abducted peoples? Will they be allowed to return to THEIR city? Or does Russia say Mariupol is ours now?

Does Russia get to keep them, speak for them and say they don't want to go back to Ukraine and not even offer a verified account for where they are to Ukraine?

I shutter to think what has really happened to those families, they cannot be forgotten. They are prisoners of war.

I do agree that water should not be blocked from flowing to Crimea. People need to have access to water.

How U.S. Special Forces Can Fight Putin Without Starting World War III (thedailybeast.com)
''According to former U.S. Army Ranger Tom Amenta, there are advantages to having on-site, operational intelligence gathering in Ukraine that can’t be equaled by remote technologies like satellite imagery or radio signal interceptions.''

''When it comes to gathering HUMINT, one option for elite U.S. forces is the use of Special Operation Groups (SOGs). Amenta described the typical SOG as a small, covert, reconnaissance task force, often made up of intelligence agents from the NSA or CIA, paired with Special Forces soldiers like Green Berets or Delta Force commandos. In order to avoid detection, the SOGs are able to work undercover within local populations.''

Could Vladimir Putin be ousted over his Ukraine invasion? (theconversation.com)
''The defection of powerful elites, rather than civil dissent, is almost always necessary to remove an authoritarian regime. The split is essentially between “hardliners” who will defend the regime by any means, and “softliners” who have their doubts and want reform.

Reluctant to give up power
Research also shows that in personalist autocracies like Russia’s — regimes in which nearly all power lies in the hands of a single person — dictators rarely relinquish power through negotiation.
This is because such leaders are typically determined to cling to power, and only a small and tightly controlled circle of people have any influence on them.
By all accounts in Putin’s case, the pandemic has exacerbated this, and his circle is much smaller and more hardline authoritarian than it used to be.''

''The military in Russia has historically been resistant to launching coups — largely due to Communist party oversight in the U.S.S.R. and a continuation of these habits in the post-Soviet era, along with a heavy dose of infiltration by the security services.''

''The former KGB
Finally, state security services might provide the most likely source of an insider coup. Putin is a creature of these agencies, but tensions are surfacing.
Putin recently placed the head of the Federal Security Bureau’s (responsible for external intelligence) under house arrest due to bad intelligence about prospects for a quick and successful victory in Ukraine.
An elite “palace coup” is possible, particularly if several of these groups join forces to forcibly remove Putin or persuade him to step down.
These processes would take time to develop, and they may be unlikely since major cracks have not yet emerged. But if there is no coup, Russia’s path will unfortunately involve even more severe repression of its population and continuing devastation in Ukraine.''

Group of Russian elite plans to assassinate Putin by poison, claims Ukraine intelligence : The Tribune India
''The goal of this group is to remove Putin from power as soon as possible and restore economic ties with the West, destroyed by the war in Ukraine.

"A part of Russia's political elite sees Federal Security Service Director Alexander Bortnikov as Putin's successor. It is Bortnikov who has recently fallen out of favour with the Russian dictator. The official reason for the FSS leader's downfall is fatal miscalculations in the war against Ukraine", Ukraine intelligence has said, Ukrayinska Pravda reported.''

''It is known that Bortnikov and some other influential members of the Russian elite are considering various options for removing Putin from power. In particular, poisoning, sudden illness, or other "accident" is not excluded, the intelligence said.''

NATO does not want to make any move that could trigger WWIII and escalate to the use of nuclear weapons. The decision to supply planes to Ukraine could be seen as crossing the line between defensive and offensive actions on NATO's part, hence the reluctance of NATO to go down that path.

There has been some talk of giving Ukraine parts of the fighter jet planes so that they could repair their own planes, but I don't know if that decison has been made yet, and which NATO country would supply the parts.
