@jimsciutto

Russian opposition leader Alexey @navalny is missing from penal colony where he has been serving his term. “He didn't show up for the meeting with his lawyers today. We have no further information on where Navalny is being taken,” the head of his Investigation Dept tweeted.
This is very worrisome. I watched the Navalny documentary on HBO Max last week and found him quite endearing. The amount of maltreatment he has endured at the hands of own country is astounding.

Ukraine’s forces suffering ‘painful losses’ in Donbas, Zelenskiy says – as it happened

4h ago 18.29
Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskiy has provided a brief update on the fighting unfolding in Donbas, maintaining the region is key to determining the course of the war.

"Over the past day no drastic changes have taken place in the battle in Donbas. The fiercest fighting is in Sievierodonetsk and in all cities and communities nearby - as before.

The losses, unfortunately, are painful. But we have to hold on. This is our state. It is vital to hold on there, in Donbas.

The more losses the enemy suffers there, the less power they will have to continue the aggression. Therefore, the Donbas direction is key to determining who will dominate in the coming weeks.

We also have painful losses in the Kharkiv region, where the Russian army is trying to strengthen its position. The battles for this direction continue, and we still have to fight hard for complete security for Kharkiv and the region

Russia tells Ukrainian fighters to lay down arms in Sievierodonetsk

Russia has told Ukrainian forces holed up in a chemical plant in embattled Sievierodonetsk to lay down their arms by early Wednesday.

Ukraine says more than 500 civilians are trapped alongside soldiers inside Azot, a chemical factory where its forces have resisted weeks of Russian bombardment and assaults that have reduced much of Sievierodonetsk to ruins.

Fighters should “stop their senseless resistance and lay down arms” from 8am Moscow time (5am GMT), Mikhail Mizintsev, head of Russia’s National Defence Management Centre told the Interfax news agency.

Civilians would be let out through a humanitarian corridor, Mizintsev added.

Shelling on Azot was so strong that “people can no longer stand it in the shelters, their psychological state is on edge,” said Luhansk regional governor Serhiy Haidai.

Ukraine: UK man's family 'devastated' by death sentence

LONDON (AP) — The family of a British man condemned to death for fighting for Ukraine said it is devastated by the outcome of what it termed a “show trial” and called Saturday for him to be released and accorded the treatment an international human rights convention guarantees prisoners of war.

A court in the separatist-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic of Ukraine convicted two British fighters and one Moroccan on Thursday of seeking the violent overthrow of power, an offense punishable by death in the eastern territory controlled by Moscow-backed rebels.

[...]

A statement issued by Britain’s Foreign Office on behalf of Pinner’s family said the 48-year-old had been a resident of Ukraine for four years.

“We sincerely hope that all parties will cooperate urgently to ensure the safe release or exchange of Shaun. Our family, including his son and Ukrainian wife, love and miss him so much and our hearts go out to all the families involved in this awful situation,” the statement said.

The family also described Pinner as a proud “contracted serving marine in the 36th Brigade,” a Ukrainian naval infantry division that helped defend the besieged southern port city of Mariupol before it was captured by Russian forces.

As a member of the brigade, Pinner “should be accorded all the rights of a prisoner of war according to the Geneva Convention and including full independent legal representation,” the family said.

Ukraine and the West have denounced the proceedings in the unrecognized Donetsk republic as a sham and a violation of the rules of war.

Tbh, I never understood why Truss promoted fighting in Ukraine.
She must have known that communication - for not speaking the language, puts her citizens in a dangerous situation.

It is officially reported that 2 volunteers from USA has been captured as well:
‘Two American volunteers from Task Force Baguette, a contracted foreign volunteer group under the Ukrainian military, are feared captured by Russian Forces after fierce fighting in the Kharkiv Region.‘

———————————————————————————————————————————

Also, now looking back, the Ukraine army wasn’t trained or prepared at all.

Even traning overboard with NATO weapons seems very difficult:

Western weapons too modern, Ukrainian army loses time with training

“The Ukrainian military is losing time in its war with Russia because it does not immediately know how to deal with the state-of-the-art weapon systems that individual NATO countries have been supplying of late. That is what NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said before a new meeting of the Ukraine contact group this afternoon at NATO headquarters in Brussels.”

When he U.S. left Afghanistan, a lot of lot of state-of-the-art military equipment was left behind, I am sure that Russia will benefit from more than wheat, glass and timber in a trade agreement with Afghanistan.

10%? I'm just getting frustrated here. Good Lord. Let's see. Just the US alone has given them $5 billion or so of military equipment. Thats like asking the US (rather demanding) to give $50 billion of equipment. Er. I'm sorry, I'm just getting overwhelmed with "we demand to be let into NATO" "we demand to be in the EU" "we demand fighter jets".

Well, Ukraine is rich of oil,gas and much more..

Ofcourse,Putin,China and so many other countries are bound by allies -
including Taliban
moo

The country also has significant cobalt, copper, titanium and nickel reserves.

“Ukraine has 10% of the world's iron reserves, 6% of titanium and 20% of graphite.
In geology, this extremely flat region is called peneplain,” Andrea Dini points out, “because it is so ancient that it has been flattened by erosion. Many of the rocks are billions of years old and you don't see them on the surface because they are covered by layers of sediment.”

... The United Nations is trying to broker a deal to resume Ukraine exports and Russian food and fertilizer exports, which Moscow says are harmed by sanctions.

"We are not responsible for establishing safe corridors. We said we could provide safe passage if these corridors are established," Russia U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said.

"It's obvious it's either de-mine the territory, which was mined by the Ukrainians, or ensure that the passage goes around those mines," he told reporters.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu earlier on Wednesday said it would "take some time" to de-mine Ukraine's ports but a safe sea corridor could be established in areas without mines under a U.N. proposal. Ankara was still awaiting Moscow's reaction to the plan, he said.

"Since the location of the mines is known, certain safe lines would be established at three ports," Cavusoglu said. He said commercial ships, using guidance of Ukrainian vessels as detailed in the plan, "could thus come and go safely to ports without a need to clear the mines."

[...]

Ukraine fears that de-mining its ports would leave it far more vulnerable to Russian attack from the Black Sea.

"Our military people are against it, so that's why we have very, very limited optimism for this model," David Arakhamia, a lawmaker and member of Ukraine's negotiation team with Russia, said at an event in Washington on Wednesday.

So, this includes lifting some sanctions against Russia. I'm guessing that's mandatory. JMO

I think there has to be something in it for both sides in order for it to work.

ETA: According to the Russian version of the call, President Xi endorses the "legitimacy" of the Russian war with Ukraine. According to the Chinese version of the call, it is more nuanced.

But the interesting thing is that the Chinese government has not stopped Russia's interpretation of the call from being reported on Weibo, social media in the PRC that everyone reads. So Xi is trying to have it both ways. The PRC government could block it on Weibo if they wanted to.

"The president and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev are shown using the exercise equipment at Putin's residence near the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, where Putin appears to mentor his workout buddy on the use of the machines.

Afterward, they grill a manly meal of steaks for breakfast and clink teacups in a toast. There's an opportunity for symbolism, there, too. In Russia, tea is considered a more down-to-earth, more quintessentially "Russian" beverage than coffee.''
