Guardian:

Russia reopens criminal case on 1918 Romanov murders
Investigators will test remains believed to belong to Crown Prince Alexei
and Grand Duchess Maria, who were killed with their family by Bolsheviks

Russia’s investigative committee has reopened its case on the 1918 murder of the Romanov royal family after the Russian Orthodox church demanded further testing of what are believed to be their remains.

The church’s hesitancy to allow the remains of two final members of the family to be buried has divided the Romanovs’ descendants, with one branch of relatives supporting the call for more tests and another expressing impatience with the hold-up.

In a statement on Wednesday, a spokesman said that, at the suggestion of a working group created this summer, the committee had reopened the case to conduct additional identity testing on the remains using previously unavailable evidence.

Russia exhumes the remains of the last Tsar Nicholas II
and his wife to relaunch a criminal probe into his murder

• Russia's Romanov dynasty were massacred by the Bolsheviks in 1918
• Remains of tsar, empress and three children were thrown into a mineshaft
• They were buried in a military ceremony at a St Petersburg church in 1998
• But Russian Orthodox Church is not convinced the bones are authentic
• The remains of two other children have now been found and Russia wants
...to convince the church to let them be buried alongside the tsar

Somehow I don't think this will ever be truly resolved, no matter how many tests they due.
It feels like a hamster wheel.
