Det Acting Supt Mark Hatt has released a statement:

Our thoughts today are with Samantha’s family and friends.

Since Samantha’s disappearance at the start of February, a significant search and investigation has been undertaken in an effort to find her. This has included a dedicated and committed investigative effort led by the missing persons squad and also involving detectives from right across crime command, counter terrorism command and western region. This has been further supported by a range of specialist resources from across Victoria police.

To get to a position where we have been able to charge someone is testament to the commitment and dedication from all those areas.

We have also had exceptional support from many people in the Ballarat community, particularly local search volunteers and members of the SES and CFA.

I know that Samantha’s disappearance has had a profound impact on the Ballarat community and I want to thank all of those people who have assisted police in many different ways over the past month.

This isn't the ending I had hoped for but it is an ending of sorts and for that I am grateful.

Hopefully the no body no parole law leads to police being able to bring her home to her family

It could still have been an accident. Ie hit by car, and died instantly.
I think these days that would be considered murder, especially if you tried to hide the body.

If you accidentally hit someone with a car, and they were still alive and and you didn't get help and they died, I think that would also be murder.
Murder of course if the injured person was still alive and you then killed them.

Or it could have been deliberate.

I wonder if he acted alone or if others are involved?

Minimal info has been released.

The news have said the man in custody has still not revealed where her body is
Hopefully he talks soon. I pray the Murphy family can get some semblance of closure soon.

Scotsburn looks like a Rural area,
it's nearby to Lal Lal state forest. I'm hoping sissy Austin gets answers too.
hopefully they checked Pings from a phone when sissy was attacked too. Sissy was left unconscious, what sort of psycho does that?

There must be some serious evidence against him if he is being charged with murder without a body found. I wonder if his house and vehicle have been searched already?

Likely we will get a presser later today. However as he has not revealed body location, I’d expect very little details to be released.

Where he lives (Scotsburn) is south of Mt Clear - where we think something may have happened to Samantha.

Dear Sam, I’m so sorry this happened to you. Taken too young, a beautiful strong woman with so much life still to live. May you rest easy. Thoughts with your family as well, Sam xx
