Apparently, he lived at home with mum and dad.. he must be a master dissembler.. . he's been able to live in his community , with the parents, everyone would have been talking about Ms Murphy, everyone would have had a theory, yet he never gave away the slightest shiver of a hint. A lifetime's art of looking people in the eye and lying. A very dangerous young man.

Especially when his lawyer already had told the court he had no mental health issues … but he may develop them from being charged with murder!

the lawyer earlier told the court the man, who is in custody for the first time, had no mental health or drug issues.

“As you can imagine there’s significant seriousness to the allegation and some risk of self-harm,” his lawyer told the Ballarat Magistrates’ Court.

The lawyer also raised concerns about prejudice to the administration of justice, and the safety of the accused “where he may have significant mental health challenges that arise from being charged with murder”.

Sadly, for the victims …. it always pays to get a good lawyer…

This Lawyer doesn’t have Murder on his portfolio as yet ….

Paywalled for some
Gee No mental health or drug issues. statement by lawyer. First time charged with something. is this correct?
Well OMG, WTF, have Vic pol Just found a young offender who had the capacity to do whatever he wanted.
This is seriously concerning at 22yo. AND Police have said, " a deliberate attack on Samantha. I am a 59YO male, OMG.

We don't know yet how he came to be on the police radar, maybe it was someone he knew that became suspicious and reported him.

Mobile phone pings in the area and investigating each ping? It may not have been premeditated murder to the degree where he travelled without any devices.

I suspect they have something else aside phone pings. If he is not being co operative in custody, they must have something of significance that enables them to put forward the said charges.

Unless he admitted it during the interview but won’t advise the body location.

What a weird thing for a lawyer to say - there goes any access to that defence….

Everything about this makes me feel so desperately sad

The reporter has stated the accused is an electrician in Ballarat. None of his family were in attendance at the court.

It has been said he replied ‘no comment’ when being interviewed by police.

Their evidence must be extensive to charge him. IMO

Given the Jesse Baird and Luke Davies case, I think at some point the accused is going to crack and tell the police where Samantha's body is.

Charged with murder, without a body.. ... that's a big step, not usually done without a whole lot of evidence... must have left traces of himself all over the place.....

Makes me think more has happened to Samantha, more charges

You would think his legal team would tell him to let the police know, otherwise you could get a life sentence

the other thing as well, if he does not co-operate with police to disclose the whereabouts of the body, he will not be eligible for parole.

The alleged murderer lived at Mt Clear. He was arrested in a house in Scotsburn.

“The man, from Mount Clear on Ballarat’s southern fringe, was taken into custody from a home in Scotsburn just after 6am on Wednesday.”

He allegedly murdered Sam in the Mt Clear area.

“According to court documents, the 22-year-old man allegedly murdered Ms Murphy within the Mount Clear area — where he resides — the day.”

Well spotted.
So perhaps he had been watching Sam on her runs for sometime and became obsessed with sick fantasies about her.
I wonder if she ran past his house regularly?

G'day fellow Sluethers. long term member, who very rarely posts, but reads a lot. Here are my thoughts.
The Police have now let the public know what they thought we needed to know. They will completely close up until the conviction is said and done. SO, lets focus on the FACTS we know from todays press conference.
1. The accused is a 22 year old male from around the Ballarat area.
2. Apperently he has not been charged before.
3. The accused parents are not invovled.
4.It was a DElIBERATE/INTENTIAL ATTACK ON SAMANTHA.
5. noone else is involved.
6. Accused will not tell police where Sam's body is
WHY,WHY, WHY ,WHY, would a 22year old do this?
Slueth you girls and guys slueth. Just think lets not speculate. which is very hard hence similarities in definitions.

He thinks he is running the show. He has a very steep learning curve to surmount. All this reluctance and obstruction is laid before the judge by the Prosecutor, ( no one gets away with anything once you are arrested and charged. EVERYTHING you do is noted for further adjudication)..as evidence of a lack of remorse and it carries weight.

He can probably maintain his attitude for years.. there are men serving LWOP in AU who , to this day, refuse to disclose.. the bodies remain unfound, because there is payoff in it, it's a big up-yours to the system, which, I hasten to add, will inevitably run him over like a steamroller, notwithstanding his current position. ..

Why would anyone do it? There is no excuse at any age.

so obviously sm was targeted by this man and it wasnt random, otherwise they would have warned the public in the area to be careful

After finding out who he is and reading more about him, I get entitled prick vibes.

Of course they would have more proof than just phone pings to charge him with murder. What I said was that phone pings likely led police to him (and possibly other suspects who were then ruled out).

Likely Samantha’s DNA in his car I’m suspecting.

I have no doubt he has had issues... bullying, mental health, trauma etc ..all conveniently covered up IMO.... no-one ever just suddenly murders another person!!!! without any history, signs, provocation...there would have been many many signs ...no criminal history? BS...none on record...but juvenile offences are undisclosed.....his family would have definitely had some idea, his school, his friends, ...he has murdered a much loved person, a mother, wife, friend....This is not just a 5 minute psychotic episode...may he rot in hell...along with his enablers!
