Must be so frustrating for the cops not to be able to find Sam for her family.

Who wouldn’t be tempted to spin a good yarn (whether in jail or not) if it meant a mid week drive to the country, some fresh air and a pub lunch?

Why is this coming out now that Stephenson went for a drive last year and may go again soon, and who told the media?

Also, which forest???

But interesting they suddenly switched from keeping their lips sealed (understandable) to a very specific and detailed public display, selective of what gets out to the media

They wanted this out

The accused was taken out of jail to assist investigators, even though it had previously been reported that the accused was not cooperating with police.
To finding her phone and doing high-fives

Her body can't be there as it has been searched exhaustively

They might want to observe his demeanour
Possibly to explain his movements / or provide further alibi evidence

Or possibly others of interest they want to flush out, worried about what is being discussed

The Canadian Forest is another story however, and people certainly detect there. It is so named because it adjoins the suburb of Canadian, but on the other side of the suburb, and nearly 2km from Canadian Gully. There is still plenty of evidence of mining there, with many shallow shafts near the Pax Hill scout camp.

I posted this earlier today, the story is paywalled, but it looks like Stephenson was being taken to the “Canadian” Forest today. I was hoping someone would post the story if they had a sub to the Herald Sun, but nothing forthcoming.

I don't think I can post the entire article, but these are the bits (that haven't already been mentioned) that were of interest to me:

"The Herald Sun has not confirmed the reason Mr Stephenson was removed from prison, which would have required special approval from the most senior chiefs at Victoria Police and Corrections Victoria."
