Satellite could plummet to Earth

The attempted intercept is unlikely to take place this evening. I haven't heard the reasons.

I just heard "rough seas" are preventing anything from happening soon. :(

Don't they have some type of stabilizer on these ships for problems such as this? It just seems like they would have that technological advantage....

This is a problem with launches from ships, and/or submarines. Waves can only be so high.

Does anyone know where they are going to break this thing up at and if there is any danger to anyone if larger chunks fall?

  • #206
Larger chunks?
Man a small chunk could do major damage if it's going fast enough. lol

I'll be waiting for the footage of the intercept.

Pentagon PC now, missed the beginning:
Probably will take the next 24 hrs to insure that they got the tank, but they have reduced the mass. Pieces nothing bigger than a football. By all indications successful intercept.

24-48 hrs to count pieces, can't rule out that hazardous materials may fall to the earth. Staff standing by to respond to that, embassies have been alerted. No debris has hit the earth that they know of. Elements of missile defense they used was the sensors.

Satellite went on orbit and immediately went dead. This is the only satellite that this has occured on.

22,000mph combined velocity of the two.

Missed some...video at Fox News and probably other media outlets by now.

Sounds successful. In the beginning the spoke of several things that they thought proved they got the fuel tank - vapor mist, fireball upon impact and something else, but I missed it! They will be confirming everything in the next 24-48 hours though.

Well I hope they got it and I hope none of those pieces hurt anyone anywhere.

My question though is why China is all upset. Are they upset because we shot it down, thinking we are flexing our muscle or because we shot it down and they could not get their hands on the wreckage like they wanted?Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Don't even know why they are upset seeing as they shot down one of their own not long ago and their junk is still floating around out there :waitasec: .

Is it safe to come out of my bunker yet?

Well, nothing has landed yet! Here's what the heavens-above website says:

"Now that the satellite has been broken up by the missile, the debris will come down over a wide area over the coming weeks as they are slowed by atmospheric friction. Re-entry will happen when the pieces reach about 100km."

Most of the pieces will burn up during re-entry. It should be possible to see some kind of blazing fireball in the sky when that happens. Satellites fall back to earth all the time, and no one has ever been hurt. :)
