Details of Disappearance
Laster was last seen on Kelly Street in Elgin, South Carolina on September 3, 2011. She had left her boyfriend, Freddie Grant, and was hiding from him staying with a woman. The woman advised Laster not to go to church on Sunday, as she feared Grant would find her. Laster has never been heard from again. She was reported missing by a family member in Florida on March 17, 2012, six months after she was last seen.

In June 2013, Grant led authorities to the body of Gabrielle Swainson, a 15-year-old Columbia, South Carolina girl who had been missing since August 2012. He had dated the girl's mother. Grant confessed that he had used a key he claimed to have lost to enter Swainson's home, kidnapped her from her bed as she slept, and sexually assaulted and murdered her.

Photos of Grant and Swainson are posted with this case summary. In 2014, he pleaded guilty to murder and kidnapping and was sentenced to 30 years in prison, to run concurrently with 18 years he was already serving for a weapons charge. In exchange, authorities dropped charges against Grant's daughter, who'd been charged as an accessory after the fact to Swainson's murder. Grant's release date is 2043.

Laster left behind a daughter; although she didn't have custody of her, she was active in the girl's life. She is originally from Florida, and her aunt and legal guardian lived in Alabama at the time of her disappearance. Foul play is suspected in Laster's case; she had been a victim of domestic abuse at Grant's hands and he had beaten her severely on multiple occasions, including while she was pregnant. He has never been charged in her disappearance, however; it remains unsolved.

"We are here to celebrate Adrianna's 39th birthday and bring attention to the fact that she's been missing for 11 years -- that's 11 birthdays, 11 years that her daughter is not going to have -- and also bringing awareness for domestic violence," said Sargent Michelle Sinclair with the Elgin Police Department.

[...]

"There's not a week that goes by that I'm not in contact with somebody, I'm not conducting an interview, I'm not handing out flyers," Sinclair said.

[...]

"She called me every day, that was one, we talked every day, and then when we didn't talk, there were the letters," said her daughter, CL.

[...]

At the time of her disappearance, Laster was living with a man named Freddie Grant, who later pleaded guilty to killing 17-year-old Gabbiee Swainson in Richland County.

Sinclair said Grant remains the only person of interest in this case, although he has never been charged in this case.

''Human remains found in a sandpit in Elgin have closed the 13-year-old cold case of a missing South Carolina woman, authorities said Friday.

Remains belonging to Adrianna Laster were found buried in a sand quarry, the Richland County sheriff and coroner said. Investigators at the time connected her disappearance to Freddie Grant, who was later convicted of murdering 15-year-old Gabrielle Swainson in 2012.

Grant has not yet been charged in Laster’s disappearance and death, but Elgin Mayor Melissa Emmons said her town’s police department plans to charge him with murder her killing. The department has had warrants prepared for more than two years.''

A woman who heard about the tragedy hosted a yard sale to raise money to get Laster's remains back home to her family.

Early Saturday morning there was overwhelming gratitude, strong community support, and heartfelt donations in Jeanette Murphy's backyard.

All for the big task of helping Laster get the proper burial she deserves at home with her family.
