The children were found inside a small SUV, which the coroner said was a "family car." Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Rutherford said the daycare staff was not involved or complicit in the death.

When asked by reporters, Rutherford wouldn't say who had driven the children to the daycare, other than saying it was a "parent," citing the ongoing investigation by the Richland County Sheriff's Department. She said at this point, it's not known if this was an unfortunate accident, so she does not want to identify anyone until it's clear what actually happened.

She said the children were enrolled at the daycare and supposed to be at the facility all day. According to Rutherford, it's believed the children were first put in the SUV in their rear-facing child seats between 7:30 and 8 a.m. Wednesday, and the SUV came back to the facility at 5:30 p.m.

Just saw this article. SMH.
Two little boys. Another case of hot car deaths -- but at a daycare facility. How could this happen?
Did the parent go in to speak with someone at the center, to pay the bill, etc., and then when the parent came out, to assume the boys were in the center, so the parent left? If so, maybe the boys were sleeping and quiet, so the parent went to work or whatever, did not see them, and then returned to get them?

It says at the bottom of the article that the childcare centre reopens on the 7th September, which just makes it all the more bizarre!
The article says the day care staff were determined to not be complicit or responsible for the tragedy, so I can see why they shouldn't have to stay closed when they did nothing wrong. MOO

Edit: I'm referring to the first article linked. I see another article says it's not been determined yet.

I agree with the above. They were likely closed for the investigation and this weekend is a holiday weekend. Daycare's near me are not open (aside from select ones) on Labor Day, which is Monday.

Could it be that the children were placed in the SUV at home in the morning and the parent accidentally didn’t drop them off at the daycare? The parent then spent the day at work, and returned to pick them up not realizing they never actually dropped them off. Or there was some miscommunication between both parents as to which car they were placed in and who was picking up and dropping off? This is heartbreaking.

That's what I posted earlier -- I could see that happening, perhaps,
the parent was running late for work, or felt lousy, or had a big presentation to give at work, or a very sick parent, or any number of things. Certainly it never should happen, but that's my guess.

These cases make me so angry. Parents don’t forget their cell phones in their vehicles but they forget their precious children. MOO
IIRC, at least when my son was that age, he was kind of hard to "forget". He was chubby and chunky and wiggly and very noisily verbal...picturing two of those, and...not getting it.

Moo I forgot to drop my child at babysitter a few times. My mind had switched to my college courses and needs of the day. I had a front facing child seat. So I always eventually noticed him. (he usually slept on car rides). But if I had tinted windows or rear facing child seat....the story might of ended sadly. ....moo

The fact that we could be so busy and distracted by our lives to forget our babies in our car, or believe that someone could be so distracted as to do that, makes me cry.
The one case where the teacher left her child in the car even after she went back out to get the donuts she forgot in the car. The child died but she remembered to go back out and get the donuts.

Still shaking my head over that one, several years later.

Good point -- and unless they were already asleep, they'd probably be babbling. My son would fall asleep easily in his car seat, but when he was awake, he would talk-talk-talk. I never had twins, but from what I've heard from those who have, is that the two chatter with each other all the time -- and they can even have their own language -- but if they were asleep, which would not be unusual in the morning IMO, they would be quiet.
This will be a tuff call, I'm thinkin'. SMH.

I truly feel for parents this happens to. In almost every case, they never thought it would happen, and they truly did believe their child(ren) were safe in daycare all day.

I am sorry for the children, for other relatives, and also the parent who will suffer forever for this mistake. It's a known possible cognitive error, however it may seem to outsiders. All IMO.

That’s what I think. Not so sure why media reports can’t be more easy to follow.

I'm not a parent but I have pretty severe ADHD; I can and have forgotten even extremely important, life altering things. Fortunately for me never anything that has meant life or death, but it's a contributing factor to my decision never to have children- I could VERY easily see myself forgetting a sleeping child in a car, or forgetting some other aspect of care.

Which isn't to say that I think due diligence of investigations of everyone involved shouldn't happened, just that I fully and completely believe it's possible for this to be the kind of horrific accident that could happen to even a very loving, caring parent.
