Cassandra Cline, 45, of Hilton Head Island, was walking the dog along a residential area of Sea Pines Resort when she was attacked. The 8-foot alligator was later found and killed. The alligator latched onto the dog's leash and engaged in a tug of war with the woman. The dog was unharmed in the attack.

Ok now that the gator population is coming back heavily , people need to be aware , I think its a really bad idea to walk your dog by the water , well pretty much anywhere in the south , we have gators here in Dallas and people seem to have no idea they are here and have been here for a very long time , I think its time for gator warnings or at least resorts should have lots of signs , northerners come down to resorts and are clueless of course , its not the norm in most parts in the US

We live in Hilton Head less than a half of a mile from where this occurred. It's horrific. We walk these same trails almost every day.

The alligator grabbed onto the leash. Not the dog, not her. It then pulled both her and the dog down a 14 ft hill into where the lagoon was. The leash was wrapped around her hand. The leash snapped off the dogs collar, allowing the dog to run back up the hill.

This was vicious, horrific, startling.. our entire community is very shaken.

Cassandra was a kindergarten teacher, an amazingly kind woman who would say hi to everyone as she walked around and would always stop to help anyone (especially children). My heart is breaking for her husband.
