Family seeks answers as police search for missing man in Socastee

The wreck happened around 3 a.m. and no driver was located at the time of the collision, Lee said.

Alex Stead, Morrison's cousin from Hendersonville, North Carolina, said that after Morrison’s gold Chevy Trailblazer was removed from the pond around 5 a.m. Tuesday, he hadn't heard anything from officials.

Stead believes Morrison, who had a passion for running, could’ve gotten out of the car and tried to walk home.

“He can run 16 miles like it’s nothing,” Stead said. “After he got out, there’s no telling how far he went, where he went. It could’ve been anywhere.”

Stead said he started calling local jails and hospitals. He even asked hospitals if there were any “John Does” in case Morrison didn’t have his wallet on him.

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has assisted with the investigation by supplying Horry County police with a helicopter to search the area where Morrison was last seen.

The article says Corey lives in an apartment at Ivystone — which is within easy walking distance of Azalea Lakes. It’s not a straight shot and I’m not sure why he wouldn’t just go down another block to make his turn, but the intersection of Palmetto Pointe Blvd and Hwy 17 Bypass can become somewhat of a bottleneck during high traffic hours. He probably just cuts thru Azalea Lakes to avoid dealing with it.

Welcome to WS. I’m so sorry your friend is missing. I was thinking of a possible carjacking at a stoplight. Would that not be possible in your opinion? I’m seeing lots of stoplights between Murphy’s Law and the accident scene.
I wouldnt want to rule anything out though ive gotta say its not like its the worst parts of MB that he prospectively went missing at.
Especially at that time. Its not a great area but its hard to imagine a car jacking. Not impossible just hard. I know he would not pick somone up. If he was drunk especially.
I do find it strange though that no one offered him a ride home. Considering how well liked he was by just about everyone.

I love the man but given the time hes been gone and knowing how he operates. Ive got a feeling this is or was more than a DUI in a ditch.

Bump for Corey!

Hey guys. I live in Myrtle Beach and my parents live in the Socastee area, specifically. I see that someone already mentioned the carjacking that occurred the other night but just wanted to reiterate that. It seems there’s been a lot of that — carjackings and robberies and so forth — happening all over Horry County in the last few weeks or so.

Kind of OT, but an uptick in crime around my neighborhood as well. Big time increase. Maybe we all should just be really more observant in case “it’s something in the air.”

Search dogs, excavator brought in to assist in search for missing Horry County man

The Socastee area remains the scene of a massive search for a Horry County man who went missing earlier this week.

Mikayla Moskov, spokesperson for the Horry County Police Department, said CUE, a missing persons organization out of North Carolina, has a large search team out across Socastee Friday aiding in the search for 26-year-old Corey Morrison. That team includes about a dozen search dogs, she added.

Additionally, officers and members of Horry County Fire Rescue are out on local waterways, with the dive team also in some of the water sources throughout the Azalea Lakes community.

Authorities said an excavator was brought in to attempt to locate any items of evidence at the original crash site.

According to Moskov, the HCPD ran its bloodhounds through the area again as part of the search.

Still searching: Family and friends continue looking for Corey Morrison

A few things I thought I’d mention —

1. He lived only 1.2 miles away from accident site.

2. He was last seen at Murphy’s Law (bar & grill) around 1 am but the article says “Just after 3 a.m., South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers found his car crashed in a ditch in front of the Azalea Lakes neighborhood...”

Where was Corey between 1 am and 3 am? Did he wreck soon after leaving ML but the car wasn’t found until much later? There wouldn’t be a lot of traffic at that hour (obviously) but there would be some. I wonder if the vehicle was visible from the road.

3. We had some heavy rain on Sunday night / Monday morning and intermittent rain every day since. The ground is very saturated, low lying areas are experiencing some minor flooding, and pond water levels are probably higher than usual.

The Help Find FB page confirms the search for Corey is over. RIP Corey, and prayers for his family and friends.

It's horrible to be curious, but I'm curious exactly how and where he was found. I wish in cases like this where it takes a few days to find a crash victim we knew more so that maybe a sort of playbook could be created to help find other crash victims more quickly in the future. There must be some commonalities I would think. Tragic.

Ohh no. :( This is such a sad outcome. I've got Corey's loved ones and all who cared to help find him in my prayers. Rest in peace, young man.

@BlkMtnGirl, it's natural, not horrible, for us to be curious and to wonder what happened in cases like Corey's. Though the mouth may never speak of it, the human mind, more often than not, is designed to ponder the unknown. You're not alone, my friend.

This is the area where an ongoing search was taking place for a missing man.

Horry County first responders and family members have been combing the area of Azalea Lakes for days after 26-year-old Corey Morrison did not return home on the night of the Super Bowl.

We have a crew at the scene and will provide further updates when they come out

Oh, his cousin is a strong, relentless force. We would all be so lucky to have such a dedicated and determined advocate in our lives. My heart is broken for the loss. Alex accomplished what so many cannot. At least his search can rest. He was able to bring Corey home.
