GUILTY SC - Dana Woods, 18, & June Guerry, 22, Berkeley County, 26 August 2012

  • #61
Salisbury confirmed June Guerry, who was last seen with Woods on Sunday night at a home in Pinopolis, died from a gunshot wound.

According to authorities, a man was visiting a family grave off Greenwood Drive and saw a shirt in the trees. Authorities say the man walked a little further and discovered the body.

"It was a shirt or a sweatshirt that was hanging up in a tree. It was like a sign that someone would want someone to come in and investigate and find her," said the coroner.

:(

Rest in peace, Dana and June.

How very sad. I hope whoever did this is found soon.

I agree with this. I looked at the burning of the car as a way of "hiding" it or being unable to identify it very quickly (at least in the criminals mind). They will have a hard time pulling trace evidence or finger prints from it at this point but I've seen worse off cars (same sort of situation / murder) and lo-behold, they could pull a finger print. I'm not sure how the accelerator was used but if they didn't douse the roof of the car with it, their hand could have been placed there, thus leaving a palm or partial print.

Another thing, I think this is the work of an amateur. I also think it's the work of one person. This is someone they knew. I'm not familiar with the area or the logistic details of how far away each destination is; what I wonder is if either girl had cash on her. I'm reading this as a motive of robbery. Of course I'm not sleuthing here - I'm guessing and hypothetically speaking.

Please no one take this as me alluding to the girls being criminals or bad people, I am going to state something that might offend someone but I want everyone to know - by no means do I think the girls deserved it or "asked" for this to happen.

Does anyone know if the girls were known to buy drugs? I don't see hardcore drugs (if they did), I would see something like pot. If the person they picked up at McDonalds (it was late at night) was the hook-up and that person stated:

"I don't have it on me, can you drive me to his house (dealer)"

So they drive him in the direction he points to, and in the course of this drive he asks the driver to pull over & himself and the girl found last, was the girl he killed first. He could have asked her to join him outdoors for a number of reasons:

(nothing that would seem alarming because if it were, it's easy to believe that the driver would have called 911 while they were away from the car OR driven the car OR chased after them. They were close friends and she wouldn't have just let her friend go off and be murdered while she sat there in the car).

She most likely heard the gunshot, noticed the person (I'm assuming male) return to the car and she asked where her friend was. Maybe at this point he gets into the front seat (having already robbed/killed the 1st girl) and they go to another remote location) at this point he may have a gun to her head and she's forced against her will to drive to where she will be killed. After he murders her, he takes the car back 10 miles or possibly drives to it purchase what he will use to burn it. He takes it back to the general area where his last victim is, and douses it, lights it on fire and leaves.

Now, this is just a random scenario and this is thrown out there because something very similar happened to a girl my friend was dating. She was called and asked if she wanted to buy any pot. Her boyfriend and she agreed and apparently it was for a few hundred bucks. They went to pick this person up that had the connection to the dealer. He asked them to drive him to the dealers house. In route (supposedly - I dont' think there was any dealer of course).. he asked them to pull over so he could urinate. He was pretty far off into the wooded area. He then yelled for the boyfriend to come help because he dropped his phone and couldn't see it. The girlfriend stayed behind in the car. He then robbed the boyfriend for the cash (as he was the one carrying it) and shot him. The girlfriend comes running out of the car after hearing the gun shot and the killer then shots her in the head. He steals the car plus the money. Later they found the car torched (although no where near the scene). it was over 300.00.

By all accounts these were good people, young 20's who weren't heavy drug users or running with a bad crowd. Everyone loved them and sadly they trusted the wrong person. So this is why I'm throwing that scenario out in the wind, and showing how one person can manage to over throw and kill two people.

These victims were not sexually assaulted (thank the lord) so it seems that the only reason would be robbery as they weren't beaten or tortured (that's typically a sign of it being personal). Robbery is impersonal, a single gun shot.

No matter how it went down or why these beautiful women had their lives cut short, the question remains:

how did the killer manage to ditch the burning car and get away. Was he on foot? Or did he call on someone to pick him up from somewhere near by or worse yet, create an accomplice by having told that person he was going to commit this crime and later called on them to pick him up. The last part is bothering me as well.

I hope I did not offend anyone with this scenario, I just feel it was premeditated, a robbery and they were chosen because most likely - they were kind hearted and very trustworthy of those around them. If they had been raped, beaten etc I could see it as an ex or someone who disliked them for whatever reason. But if that was the case, it would take 2 people to subdue each girl. I also think if it were 2 men, and it was personal - they would have violated the women sexually to demean them.

I really feel this is one person.

This scenario makes sense. I think the perp has to from the area. Jmo

Can someone please confirm - when a cell phone is 'pinged' does it give the location of the phone, or the location it was last used?

I was thinking....

Did Dana and June drive to Felder Creek and lose the phone, perhaps in a struggle?

Or did the murderer take the phone and dump it there? Or still have it in their possession or in their vehicle and that is their location?

If the girls lost the phone themselves at that location, then clearly they weren't merely popping out for a burger.

Would it make sense for the perp to torch the car then steal a phone? I wonder whether it is a highly desirable phone, which could make the set up robbery idea quite possible.

The only other thing is.... both girls worked but (and I am in the UK so this is just a guess) their jobs do not indicate they would have a high disposable income.

When a cell phone is "pinged" it shows the tower it was last used to communicate from. It does not show however the exact location of where the phone had been used at. I think there is further abilities to track now with smart phones (my Iphone for example and my macbooks have a few different anti-theft "getting away with it" applications). A ping just means the cell phone tower in which it utilized, so it can narrow down the area but not give a direct address.

Most people now have a smart phone of some sort (droids and Iphones being the most popular). If the perp stole the phone, it actually is going to work against him if it's a droid, galaxy or iphone (there may be others but those mentioned are the ones I'm familiar with).

See, when you steal an iphone and you go and slip your sim card in .. if the phone is reported stolen - the carrier of the phone will be alerted to it being used. When you switch to an iPhone you must switch over your services to be specifically FOR an iPhone. In doing so, I've always been asked to read the serial #'s. It will show up if it's stolen. Another thing too with almost all smart phones, if a person isn't with the stolen person's cellular provider then they have to "jail break" it. It can still be tracked.

If a person were to pawn it, all it would take is LE to go to pawn shops and search for that certain phone and look at it's serial # and most likely it's sim card. Most people don't know how to remove a sim card or reboot the system with a "hard start" unless they've had issues with their phone before and called Apple Care (again, for an iPhone).

Yes, people can still get away with the theft but many people now install the free app that's called something along the lines of "Where is my phone" and it DOES give the exact location as it enables GPS. This is what my phone and macbooks have. If the girls had GPS active on their phones - it will give more details in their last hours. Remember the FBI is involved which means the probability that this case will move swiftly to an arrest is high.

And Dana had a smart phone:

Hill continually called her daughter a good girl, a “techie,” one who had to have the latest, the newest and the best in technology.

“Dana has three computers in her room,” her mother said. “A desktop, a laptop and a tablet, and was often on at least two of them at the same time.

“She also has a Smart Phone. And that’s how I knew something was wrong because she is never off that Smart Phone.”

Her mum also says:

Hill remembered her daughter as one who would go out of her way to help and protect others and would often put their needs ahead of her own.

“She would often get off work at 8 p.m. when she worked at Burger King, come home and take a nap and then be back up there at 1 a.m. because there was a boy she worked with who needed a ride home and she would go back to give him a ride home all the way to Cross,” Hill said.

Perhaps she helped out the wrong person this time?

Her poor mum, it's clear she idolised her daughter. Having a teen myself, I don't even want to try to imagine what she is going through.

Yes i know i should provide a link, but i can't remember the site, but it was long story and local. i think
Anyways it said some fella was seen driving around in June Guerry car.
And why was Dana so protective of June - being that June was older and had a child- i'd think it would be the other way around.
There is a very selfish, selfcentred person with a gun driving around, its either random, robbery or rejection -i pick rejection.
i found some stuff on myspace, so june was supposed to or did get married.
So not sure if June Guerry's name is her maiden or married name.

Another friend on the scene Tuesday who would not give her name said Guerry’s father and brother-in-law saw a white male driving Guerry’s car on Saturday night near the Tail Race Canal bridge, and started following it but lost track.

Wilson said he saw Guerry on Saturday night.

“She was acting fine, cutting up and everything,” he said. “June played around a lot. She was always outgoing.”

Dana and June need to be moved to found forum - don't know how to do it.
They were so young - they should be having fun, playing around, having a beautiful life.

Hell at that age between add(15) and minus 5 years i was totally self destructive, still can't figure how i am still alive -- lifes not fair - ya just gotta meet - that random one person with anger management problems.
they probably died for someones ego problem, - it really bugs me that people that try, are responsible, and they just end up in such sad situations.

This doesn't add up does it?

Another friend on the scene Tuesday who would not give her name said Guerry’s father and brother-in-law saw a white male driving Guerry’s car on Saturday night near the Tail Race Canal bridge, and started following it but lost track.

Then Dana's mum says:

Hill said her daughter was out on Saturday night doing a favor for her – taking her cousin home to the child’s mother in Pinopolis and then picking up her friend June Guerry to give her a ride home.

One reports that June's father and BiL were following June's car, and the other (and many more) report it was Dana's car that was found burned out.

Why would she be giving June a ride home when June has her own vehicle? And where was she giving June a ride home from?

It could be a case of poor reporting or maybe the 'friend who would not give her name' was not telling the truth.

edited to add: Unless June loaned her car to someone which is why Dana was picking her up? I feel this is highly unlikely but I suppose it should be considered.

There is another girl missing nearby, although I cannot find an official missing person report for her. However, the man suspected of being involved in her disappearance is on a most wanted list and LE is quoted as saying
"You do something like this to a loved one, cannot imagine what he would do to a stranger.'

I am not sure whether it would be OK to link to this other girl and the wanted man?

if the link is not ok, you can edit -or the mods will -no worries-
dana was giving june a ride,- someone else was driving junes car, so ???

Wright says neighbors are taking precautions.

"Everyone is locking their doors. Everyone has the same thoughts. It has to be someone in the area. There's someone in the area who knows something about it."

"It's something I never thought would happen around here. You hear about things happening so tragically but never something so close to home. That really touches you," said Erica Grant.

Grant says her sister worked with Dana at Burger King. She remembers Dana as a nice girl that wouldn't harm anyone.

"She was a really good girl and she couldn't understand who could have done this to her and

And that's what just about what everyone wants to know why… But also… who?

Berkeley County Corner Bills Salisbury will not say where June Guerry was shot or how many times, saying it would hurt the investigation.

######

June Guerry 22-years old of St. Stephen are now a homicide victim; her body was discovered Wednesday in a muddy and shallow trench in the Francis Marion national Forest near Alvin. Clothes hanging from a tree limb near the body helped searchers pinpoint the area.

Disclaimer - I have no reason to believe this person is linked with the murders of Dana and June, but it is very local and the male is considered dangerous and is now on the most wanted list. MODS - please remove if you feel it is inappropriate. Thank you

On 16th August, Shannon Caruso went missing from Goose Creek, 15 miles or a 25 minute drive from Moncks Corner. A few weeks prior to her disappearance her boyfriend assaulted her and held her hostage for 2 days. I cannot find any official report for Shannon being missing, but that may be down to my lack of skill.

The ex-boyfriend, Kenon Roderick Stevens, is now on the Summerville PD's Most Wanted list. He is now believed to be hiding out 'around Ridgeville', 21 miles or 40 minute drive from Moncks Corner. LE stated

........ no one should go near Stevens if they see him.

"You do something like this to a loved one, cannot imagine what he would do to a stranger.'

two conflicting reports (one based on someone who didn't want to leave their name). One refers to Dana's car and the other says June's car.

http://www.abcnews4.com/story/19422206/report-reveals-details-in-murder-of-two-women

According to the report, a man told deputies he saw a white male with short hair driving Woods' 2006 white Chevrolet north on Highway 52 across the Tail Race Bridge. The report states the man followed the car and believes it turned on to Highway 402.

An incident report released Thursday complemented information provided by relatives and officials in reconstructing the women’s last moments.

The report named a friend of Guerry who lives off S.C. Highway 402, about a mile from where Woods’ body was found. The report also mentioned a friend of Woods who lives near the Felder Creek area of Jedburg, where records show that her phone was last used around 3:30 a.m. Monday.

At some point after the stop, a man climbed into Woods’ compact Chevrolet Metro. In her final phone calls, the Trident Technical College student wasn’t specific about what she was doing next.

She said only that a friend of Guerry was with them and that they were headed to another fast-food restaurant, a McDonald’s.

#####

Family members and friends have hinted on Facebook that the man who got into Woods’ car was a local and an acquaintance, but officials wouldn’t address any of those theories.

An incident report released Thursday complemented information provided by relatives and officials in reconstructing the women’s last moments.

Moon said detectives knew of “some people that could, maybe, possibly be involved.”

“But there’s a lot of speculation,” he said.

#####

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury wouldn’t discuss how many times Guerry was shot. Also unknown is whether she was slain at the dirt pit.

“We don’t actually know where she died,” Salisbury said. “We’re still investigating that.”

That same morning, Guerry’s future brother-in-law, Ernie Young, reported seeing Woods’ Chevrolet traveling over the Tailrace Canal, according to the report. A white man with short hair was at the wheel, but Young saw no sign of the women, the report said.

“He turned around and followed the car,” Moon said. “But he lost it” near S.C. 402, which leads to Cane Gully Road and the scene where Woods’ body was found the next day.

they arrested two men in the connection to this murder. Apparently June had dated one of them in the past. (According to one of June's sister..I read it on her FB page)

http://www.postandcourier.com/artic...-men-arrested-in-woods-guerry-double-homicide

edit to add: I also believe the two men are actually cousins from what I could gather from the Ray's facebook page. Ray is also on June's friends list. I have not been able to find Caleb's FB page.
