GUILTY SC - Devon Epps, 7, murdered, Greenville, 12 Aug 2007

My husband has lost numerous cell phones over the years and he still has the same number he always had, even switched providers in between.... so her calls showing up from her old number doesn't worry or surprise me.

At least she didn't say the carjacker was black.

LOL...that ones been used already. :D
The "cavemen" are fairly recent fictitional characters. Guess she thinks it's worth a shot.

Serves me right for not reading the whole thread. I'm always a day late. :banghead:

I really thought she would have confessed by now. I was just checking to see if she did.

Well, I too know that if you lose a cell phone you can keep the same # ( I lost mine when I left it on the roof of my car and then proceeded onto a highway, lol).
I hope we do see an arrest soon-this is disgusting!
ETA: who leaves a blanket on a lamp anymore?!
Maybe it was an accident if he put a blanket over the lamp to keep the light from shining under his bedroom door, if he was supposed to be asleep?

Reannan and sister, thanks for the drive-by. Is this a popular road to take when coming back from the beach? Who hangs around the beach till that late at night? Our park rangers kick us out practically when the sun goes down. Seems like it would be easy to prove with eyewitnesses and all the sand that comes with being at the beach.

I enjoy reading the local news forum. That place gets heated. A lot of people there have legitimate questions and nobody is really answering them.

Me too! She must really be sticking to her story.

I wonder if Devon had any DNA under his fingernails.

Here's my theory, for what it's worth.

Anyone with an ounce of medical knowledge would know that when you smother someone, you leave distinct clues. For one, the front teeth would cause bruising or indentation on the inside of the upper and lower lip lines. Two, there is usually a showing of petechial hemorrage. From the National Institutes of Health:
"[Dr. Fierro]: Petechial hemorrhages are small pinpoint hemorrhages generally seen and looked for in the lining of the eyes in the conjunctiva, either that of the lids which is called palpebral conjunctiva or the bulbar, that covering the bulb of the eye and they generally are sign of terminal asphyxia. Now what's interesting of course is what causes people to have petechae in the first place and it's generally because there's increased intravascular pressure that causes the small end vessels of the capillaries to rupture. When do you have that? You have that when you breathe against resistance or try and breathe against resistance. So what would cause that? Well, many varieties of asphyxia such as smothering, strangulation, anything that compresses on the neck, while the person is conscious and trying to breathe against it. So generally petechae are something that you need to account for—you have to explain those."

I particularly love that last sentence. She is a nurse. She had to invent a stranger to cover up because she knew what the evidence would show.

I think something went wrong at the beach. Maybe he completely ticked her off. Maybe he wouldn't settle down and she was trying to headlock him to hold him and she cut off his airway. Maybe he had a screaming fit and didn't want to go home and things got out of hand.

Somehow I don't get the feeling that she was gearing up to do this. I think it happened by accident and she had to cover her tracks. Seriously, in this day and age, I can't imagine that she would leave a MySpace up like that----party central---while she was "planning" to kill her son.

I'd be interested to know if the pillow had any trace evidence that could show that it was actually used. I'd also like to know if his hyoid bone in his neck was crushed. That most likely wouldn't happen in a typical smothering, but would happen in asphyxiation.

Just my :twocents: .

Do we really know why she was out that late at night? I think I read the beach thing at the forum, then someone else said she wasn't at the beach but was going to his (or hers?) gp's house. Something about that road not being the best way to the gp's from the beach. I don't think the media ever said.

I think you are right though, FLMom. I don't think it was premeditated at all. Probably just rage, and maybe drunken rage at that.

Well, if she is guilty, she is incredibly stupid or she would have come up with a better story. That would explain the lack of foresight regarding her Myspace. Why didn't she just say an intruder broke into the house? What is up with this carjacking stuff? I don't believe LE is buying it either, because they haven't issued any warnings to the local residents regarding knife-wielding pillow-smothering homeless people running amuk in the neighborhood.

Has anyone learned what evidence LE has to support her story? That was something stated in an article, but I'm not clear what was meant.

I saw that too, Marie. It was a one-liner with out any other information! I haven't learned anything new about this case except from the various news site forums, and you really can't go by those.

Here it is: "The mother is the only eyewitness we have," Hildebrand said. "There was some evidence found that would substantiate what she told us." He would not say what that evidence was. -- associated press

And another:
Investigators say she is not considered a suspect. They say they won't release her name in case the suspect tries to retaliate. Link

i think they should step up and clear her if they know something. if they have evidence this mom did not do it why let her suffer such public scorn?

They said the exact same thing about that man who shot his wife and three kids and then blamed his wife. They said it right up until the point they arrested him.

30 tips followed in boy's death
No named suspects as investigation begins its second week

In the week since a 7-year-old boy was killed, investigators have spoken with his mother more than once and followed up on about 30 leads, a spokesman for the Greenville County Sheriff's Office said Sunday.

The investigation into the Aug. 12 death of Devon Epps begins its second week today with no named suspects, Lt. Shea Smith said, and deputies continuing to pursue leads.

Epps' mother, Amanda Reagan Smith, told deputies that a knife-wielding man ordered her out of her car before locking himself inside and putting a pillow over the boy's face, said Master Deputy Michael Hildebrand.
