Lordy. She doesn't even correctly explain what causes borderline personality disorder.

The jury has already determined that Jones is not insane...the defense lawyers, on the other hand, might actually be crazy. The jury must be fuming.
Notes to defense team:
1) Just because you don’t want something to be true doesn’t make it untrue(Dr Cruz’s report)
2) Saying something a million times doesn’t make it true(Jones is schizophrenic)
3) Your job is to make an argument for your client NOT to get the death penalty, not to ensure that he does.

  • #843
She can't really believe Jr. believed N was trying to hurt him???

  • #844
I might be wrong about the mob with the torches and pitchforks heading to the courthouse for Jones....they might be going after the defense attorneys.

I'm getting genuinely pissed off, and I'm not a juror who has sacrificed weeks of my time, been traumatized by direct exposure to sickening evidence and the painful grief of so many witnesses, and hey, thought as a jury we'd made it crystal clear we don't think he's crazy..

Great last question by State, pointing out Jr. confessed to lying about thinking the kids were going to cut him up and feed him to the dogs. Did she know that?
Her: Well, I wouldn't be surprised.
State: But....that statement is in your report (as "evidence" of his delusion).

---
I trust the jury isn't discussing what they just heard during break, but they wouldn't be human if there wasn't a whole lot of eye ball rolling and exasperated sighing going on right now.

I’m glad the prosecution brought that statement up. Out of his own mouth, no experts involved... “ I lied about having a delusion”.
And that false delusion seemed to be the cornerstone of all the defense’s mental health experts’ diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Today marks the third day of the sentencing phase of the Timothy Jones Jr. murder trial.
On Friday, the defense called their first two witnesses to the stand.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 1h1 hour ago
Court is about to get underway, as the defense prepares to bring witnesses to the stand in the punishment phase of the Timothy Jones Jr. case. It's now been seven weeks since jury selection in the case began. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 1h1 hour ago
The first witness on the stand for the defense today is Dr. Donna Maddox, a forensic psychiatrist.

WATCH LIVE: Defense calls more witnesses in Timothy Jones, Jr. sentencing phase

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 1h1 hour ago

Maddox says Boyd Young contacted her shortly after Jones was in custody at the Department of Corrections. Says she has met with Jones at least once a year, saying when she first met him, she says he was "clearly psychotic" and meets the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 1h1 hour ago
The first witness on the stand for the defense this morning is Dr. Donna Maddox, a psychiatrist. She said she diagnosed Jones with schizophrenia--based on evaluations in 2014 and forward. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 1h1 hour ago
This testimony comes even though the jury found Jones guilty on all five counts of murder last week, not rendering either a "guilty but mentally ill" or "not guilty by reason of insanity" verdict.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 1h1 hour ago
CONT: Interesting move, because the jury returned a straight guilty verdict in six hours, indicating they didn't buy the defense of mental illness during the first phase of this trial. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 1h1 hour ago
Dr. Maddox points to genetics as being a major reason Jones meeting the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia, saying drug use also contributed to the symptoms. She says since she started meeting with him in 2014, Jones still meets the criteria.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 1h1 hour ago
Dr. Maddox testifies she has received two calls during the trial, the first on May 8 and again on May 22--both of which after Jones reported his hallucinations were returning. She upped his medication dosages as a result. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 59m59 minutes ago
Dr. Maddox talks about how she received two calls about Jones during the trial, leading to her recommendation that they raise his dosage of medication since Jones told staff he was hallucinating.
She also says Jones often "under-reports" his symptoms during their meetings.

What are the odds Jr. will have the guts to address the jury directly? About zero?

Boyd Young finishes his initial line of questions, leading Solicitor Rick Hubbard to begin his cross-examination.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 47m47 minutes ago
Hubbard questioning Dr. Maddox about how other psychiatrists who conducted similar tests on the defendant concluded that Jones did not suffer from schizophrenia nor cognitive impairment.
She says Jones "definitely has something" since he falls on the schizophrenia criteria.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 42m42 minutes ago
Solicitor Hubbard mentions how conclusions from Dr. Frierson (court-appointed psychiatrist) and Dr. Kruse found Jones had no cognitive issues, as well as how Dr. Wood (SC DOC) changed her diagnosis a couple of times.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 33m33 minutes ago
Dr. Maddox says ever since she first met Jones nearly five years ago, she says "he's not malinguering." Reiterates her opinion that he has schizophrenia.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 21m21 minutes ago
Dr. Maddox says that she increased Jones's dosage of Geodon on May 22. Hubbard brings up how testimony from FBI Special Agent David Mackey (May 17) and Jones's ex-wife Amber (May 20) happened around the time Jones told SCDC staff he was hallucinating again.

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 26m26 minutes ago
Dr. Maddox says she was asked to up #TimothyJones dosage of geodone on May 22nd. The solicitor points out that Jones' ex-wife testified that day as well as FBI Agent Mackey, and LCSD's Mike Phibbs, who went over his phone records. @wachfox

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 26m26 minutes ago
Maddox says Geodone does not make you high but it calms schizophrenics. @wachfox #TimothyJones

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 23m23 minutes ago
On re-direct, Defense Attorney Boyd Young points out that Dr. Maddox has been hired by the solicitor's office before to consult on a case. #TimothyJones @wachfox

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 21m21 minutes ago
After Dr. Maddox steps down from the stand, Judge Griffith calls for a break.

And that false delusion seemed to be the cornerstone of all the defense’s mental health experts’ diagnosis of schizophrenia.

They needed a delusion to diagnose schizophrenia and that's the only one that could be found, even if it was entirely self-reported and contradicted by every other shred of evidence, including his own admission he'd lied.

(Remember that almost comical attempt of his to convince he was afraid of his babies, when the FBI showed him photos of them and he jumped back out of "fear" of them? This from someone who had driven their dead bodies around with him for 9 days).

They'd have been much better off trying to use borderline personality disorder, which he had been diagnosed with pre-murders, as a mitigator.

After a jury break, the next witness called to the stand is Rob Brannon of the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 4m4 minutes ago

Officer Brannon says Jones has been a model inmate and never really left his cell unless he was getting his medication.
Deputy Solicitor Shawn Graham begins cross-examination.

Defense brings up another corrections officer from Kirkland to the stand: Officer Ronald Rogers, who has been trained in crisis intervention.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 45s46 seconds ago
A corrections officer testifies when Jones was originally brought to Kirkland Institution, other inmates had heard of the case as a result of publicity and were saying derogatory things to Jones, but he largely ignored them. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 2m2 minutes ago
Officer Rogers says Jones was very polite in prison and blocked out the noise from other inmates concerning the attention around his case. He steps down from the stand.
Judge talking with the attorneys.

Next up on the stand: Roberta Thornsberry, Jones's grandmother, who previously testified on May 24.

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 3m3 minutes ago
Roberta Thornsberry, the paternal grandmother of #TimothyJones, is back on the stand for the defense. She previously testified in the first phase of the trial. @wachfox

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 2m2 minutes ago
Judge calls for a jury break after the prosecution raised an objection to a question asked by defense attorney Casey Secor to Thornsberry.

What are the odds Jr. will have the guts to address the jury directly? About zero?

I wondered about that over the weekend. I can’t imagine that would go well for him, but it might be his only play, just to throw himself at the jury’s mercy. I doubt it will happen though.

Jury returns from break, and Thornsberry is back on the stand. Defense shows childhood pictures of Jones Jr. She says "Tim was a happy little boy" who loved to swim and go to the park.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 8m8 minutes ago
As Thornsberry talks about Jones's first stint in prison and the last time she saw her great-grandchildren, Jones gets emotions, wiping his eyes with a red, patterned handkerchief.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 6m6 minutes ago
Defense now showing a video of Tim Sr. (wearing an American flag shirt) holding Elias's hand in the backyard while Merah walks around in a blue dress. Appears to be when the oldest children were toddlers.

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 16m16 minutes ago
The court is watching this video of #TimothyJones Senior and Eli as a toddler @wachfox

Tim Jones Jr.'s grandmother, Roberta Thornsberry, pleads with the jury not to sentence him to death. "Our family has been through enough, this has broke us so bad, I think this would be the nail in the coffin." @wis10

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 14m14 minutes ago
Thornsberry cries while saying their family has been through enough. She has lost multiple children and a grandchild. She cries that she still loves her grandson #TimothyJones @wachfox

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3m3 minutes ago
Thornsberry says she loves her grandson with all her heart and she says him being put to death "would be the final nail in the coffin." She says this whole situation has hurt the family.
Shawn Graham begins his cross-examination.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 1m1 minute ago
Thornsberry steps down from the stand. Judge Griffith calls for a lunch break. Testimony should continue around 1:40.

Hi all, I have a question, did Amber testify during the penalty phase?

  • #859
I wondered about that over the weekend. I can’t imagine that would go well for him, but it might be his only play, just to throw himself at the jury’s mercy. I doubt it will happen though.

If they're still trying to sell schizophrenia, I'm guessing he refuses to accept any responsibility. No acceptance of responsibility = no remorse = he'd have to be suicidal to address the jury. Jr. is many things, but suicidal isn't one of them.
