I graduated from CCU & Gamma Phi Beta is definitely one of their larger sororities... but I personally haven't heard anything about HE attending classes there. It's likely she has a lot of friends who do/did though and I imagine some of them could be in that sorority. I don't think a lot of CCU students live at River Oaks though and it's not close enough to the school where someone would assume it was filled with college student. Most students live in apartments closer to the school on 544 or in the middle of Carolina Forest like Canterbury, Turnberry Park, or Seaside Grove... from what I can tell.

go chants! did not graduate from coastal, but i do work there and can say for a fact she did not attend classes at ccu. i do think she attended hgtc, and then later was enrolled in an online school

Some people have said that tourism is the reason why LE isn't saying anything, why there isn't much local media attention, etc. But there have been some very high-profile cases in tourist areas. Caylee's case was in Orlando. There are more hotel rooms in Orlando than any other case in the US. It's a major tourist destination. If I go by what some people are speculating, then Disney should have put a stop to that circus, right? Or what about Madeleine McCann or Natalee Holloway, both went missing from tourist areas, and their cases were huge. So what's different about Heather's case?

That's like comparing apples and limes. Orlando has a ton of attractions and is a larger city on an entirely different scale. Myrtle Beach's main attraction is the "family friendly" beach. That's it. There isn't much here. No amusement parks, no casinos, etc.

MB and Horry County keep the crime out of the news for fear of spoiling the "family" image. Nevermind that there is a strip club, liquor store, or adult toy store on every corner, the girls turn tricks all hours of the day or night in the most populated tourist spots, and the main park, Chapin, is dubbed "Crackpipe" park by the locals.

Maybe LE leaked the police report on purpose so that people would see that is quite possibly a domestic-type issue...or conclude that, anyway.

I don't recall LE saying a whole lot of anything in the Natalee Holloway case, either, until they got a better lead. And Madeline was three, not 20, so I don't count that the same. I find that LE is more forthcoming with minors that are missing.

So all I can think of is that if LE let people know that people keep going missing in Myrtle Beach, that might kill their Spring Break business and the area might not be able to take that hit in this economy. Just another thought.

Is there really a violent ex? Cause I find it amazing that this hasn't come up on FB (at least to my knowledge) when it seems like everything else has.

Sorry, it's actually Chapin park. I was listening to something and typing at the same time.

It's about 16th Ave N. in Myrtle Beach. Right in the heart of the tourist area. The Chapin Library is right next to the park. Al hours of the night and day you can see the deals taking place, people passed out on the swings, etc.

I have attached a picture for reference - 10th Ave to 29th is considered the "downtown tourist areas" . You'll notice Chapin Memorial Library around 16th Ave, the park is right next to it.

The poice station is on 10th and Oak. Just behind that would be Carver and Dunbar streets - two of the most dangerous street in MB. I just to work on Oak and would travel between the police station, city offices and court houses all day. You would see cares leaving Carver and Dunbar, head straight over to Grey or Nance streets and then back to Carver and Dunbar, all day long, making deals.

Locals know not to walk the streets here, day or night. Def. do not go out on the beach at night - so many armed robberies. From 10th Ave to 29th Ave, from the beach to 17 Bypass, tourists love to walk this area between the hotels and Broadway at the Beach. Locals KNOW not to do that because this is where about 70% of the robberies take place in myrtle beach, all hours of the day!

Hardly any of this is reported in the media. If you look at the public index, the crime report sites, MB's Citizen to Police site, you will see the sheer numbers of crimes not reported.

IDK...I just feel like people are overestimating the effect on tourism that a missing person case is going to have. Yes, there are multiple unsolved ones, but which ones is the average person going to "worry" about? None of the missing are children, for instance. I just can't see there being some significant loss. The state of South Carolina has a $15 billion a year tourism industry, with about $6.5 billion of that being in the MB area. I would think there would need to be major national media coverage for there to be a noted impact. Like constantly telling people how dangerous MB is, you will go missing, putting fear into people, very sensational rather than the local media just giving more coverage to a missing woman case.

In so many cases we have been allowed to see search warrants and contents.
IIRC long lists in the Anthony case.........photos of LE in & out of the home. Webcams from news stations...........why did that all stop? I know some SW are sealed. In this case is it because the couple are not named suspects? In my small corner of the world this would be top headlines every night on the news...........I just do not get all the tight lipped around this case. Why were old pictures being used? tattoos & car not pictured on flyers? No one speaking out about anything.......friends & relatives of victim and couple........mum is the word for this case :banghead:

Also, re: tourism, most people are going to go where they want to go and where they find the prices, hotels, and etc. that they want. Unless I was traveling out of the US, I would never think about local crime as something to affect my vacation plans. We used to go to Atlantic City all the time when I was young and that was no paradise, crime-wise, lol...within a block or two of the boardwalk, it was horribly seedy...may still be that way.

It's not just about a missing persons case not being cover, it's basically a media blackout down here. As someone pointed out, those with close ties to the media also sit on the board of the Chamber of Commerce.

They banned bike week, instituted a helmet law that was later repelled due to the impact it had on the tourism, the public outcry. Just from having to wear a helmet.

Our mayor just took a $30,000 pay raise for "additional duties" for what would generously be called a part-time position that he shares with the City manager. For reference, mayor of Charlotte, NC makes between $13,000 and $16,000.

They instituted a 1% tax increase to pay for the "tourism" ads they were putting out everywhere to make up for the losses incured from the bike week blowout, the helmet law, and the general decline in tourism due to the economy. That tax brought in millions.

The powers that be are not going to take a chance losing any of that!

She read for about an hour then told her husband "I'm done with that!" She has 1 daughter and 3 granddaughters from 16 down plus one step granddaughter who is 17. They have always watched them but not guarded them while there. This is what would really happen if people heard about all these cases.

I do think MB is a tighter market than say, Orlando, and there probably is some effort to limit national news. At the very least, they sure don't want it publicized.

Perhaps some of you wouldn't choose a vacation destination based on crime rates, but it is definitely something I think about. The closer you get to downtown Myrtle Beach, the sketchier it gets. You really see some ratchet people down there and if you look up the crime rate, it's high. The mayor likes to blame it on the bloated population during the season, but IMO most of the crime is committed by locals. Not many people who travel to a family beach destination are going out and robbing others at gunpoint, etc. That is just his poor excuse for not doing a better job with the city.

I, on the other hand, live very close to North Myrtle Beach (a completely different city, not just the northern part of Myrtle Beach), and it is like a whole different world in terms of the locals population and general shadiness.

So it was leaked and not requested through a FOIA request? Are you referring to the partially redacted officially-looking one published in myhorrynews?

Or the other one that family friends were floating? Whether that one was officially released or not, I'm trying to find out how that one came to be in a private citizen's hands, but not in an official report format.

If anyone can shed some light on either of these reports, and, if anyone knows if one nor both were leaked, or how they came to be released to the public, I would appreciate it. TIA
