GUILTY SC - HT, 4, Johns Island, 13 Feb 2018 *Arrest*

Maybe she or another adult family member was a witness against him, or on the jury, etc., and he figured taking a child was payback. Something made them look for him.

They were not from the area. Their family was not from the area, according to reports. They moved to SC because he was military and they had been there less than a year. Evans has been in jail since 2010. I just don’t see how their paths could have crossed unless it was since he was released from jail this month.

That's reasonable. Though, it was also pointed out earlier that the POI wasn't the suspect at large to begin with. Many people seemed to gloss right over it, including media sites who flashed the POI photo intimating that he was the suspect on the loose. That was never actually stated by the police officials.

Yeah...the media was probably bummed it wasn’t the dude with the flame and lightening bolt on his face. Far more article-clicks versus some random dude with beard stubble.

"*Interim Police Chief Jerome Taylor said an “unwelcome guest” was at the T home, but couldn’t characterize the incident as a burglary.

Taylor said investigators are trying to “unravel . . . the motive.”

Can't call it a burglary if nothing is stolen. Guessing they are trying to determine if the motive was to take Heidi, to beat up a woman, or some other motive. Maybe he was delusional and thought this was his ex and a kid she was hiding from him. He has an extensive drug history, who knows.

What may I ask are your thoughts, Henry?
Not sure....feels like gaps. But hopefully we will understand more in time.

I did find 2 quotes from 2 different sources that the Mom stated her attacker was Hispanic.....clearly he wasn't Hispanic, was 10 years older than she thought, and had very little hair.
We know eyewitness testimony is bad...

"Police Chief Jerome Taylor emphasized that H's mother provided very limited information on the alleged perpetrator,

"She basically stated that it was possibly a Hispanic male," said Taylor. "The description was very, very brief."*

"Taylor said she could only provide "limited information" on the attacker, describing him as a*Hispanic male, 25 to 30 years of age, skinny with a short haircut and wearing all gray clothes."

My guess is drugs. The reported attack on mom sounded very personal.

Eyewitness testimony is notoriously bad quite often. In this case the victim was attacked and may not have gotten a good enough look at his face. BBM. I just want to point out that mom may have been right about the clothes at least. They found H wearing an adult size grey hoodie.

"The mother was hurt. Somehow, though, she managed to come to the door, the police chief said."

I’m ashamed that my first thought was, “Why hadn’t she dialed 911yet if she had the coherency and strength to go to the door?”

Then I remembered how I lose my cell phone about 3 times a day — while not battered and bruised. So I’ll just take a seat on this one. But yeah, that caught my eye for various reasons.

I agree with others here who think drugs (on the suspect's part only) play a role. He is recently released from jail, needs drugs so he also really needs money. Thinks Mom With Kids will be an easy attack. Enraged when he realizes she has no cash.

But WHY take the 4 year old? And I'm definitely glad she's alive but why would someone take her? If he worried about her being a witness, then why keep her alive?

The only other kinda theory I have is that there is indeed some history between him and the mom, and he spent many years in prison stewing about it. But I am still stumped as to why he would take the child.

I can think of many cases where killers or rapists have used brutal violence on strangers.

Agreed, but they don't typically grab the 4 year old on their way out.

I believe that was a mistake in the article. It was taken from the press conference and reporters were asking multiple questions at the same time. The Mayor said the neighbor/friend came to the door. It has been reported that the mom had a very long road ahead of her with multiple surgeries because she was beaten so severely. She was unconscious most of the day. I don’t think there was any way she could have walked to the door. I think the reporter misunderstood what LE was saying when he said the neighbor found the mom and answered the door when police arrived.

RBBM. I think you answered your own question. He needed cash for drugs. JMO.

This is a dangerous man who never should have been released from prison. There doesn't have to be some connection between him and the family for a hardened criminal to act like a hardened criminal. JMO.

Gaps again....wrong neighborhood for cash. Didn't steal anything other than a 4 year old. Beats up the mom......

Something else going on.

Do we know for sure he didn't steal anything else? What do you mean by "wrong neighborhood for cash?"

Agreed.

If not, then he’s really out of touch with kidnappings these days. While incarcerated, he must have missed the nightly seminars we see on the news about the ease of abductions.

This dude’s plan plays out more like a movie plot; possible B&E, assault that could have been deadly, alleged kidnapping across state lines, and CAR CHASES. Directly after getting out of prison early.

That’s a lot of effort to get one kid, no cash, yet all the drama.

I don’t get it.

On a completely unrelated note, would the prison have records of who his pen pals were? A log of calls he made from prison before getting out? Are they recorded? Since he didn’t seem to waste much time after release, I wondered what his communication records might show.

The houses are brand new and in the 300,000-400,000 range. Maybe that is middle class but to a career criminal/drug addict who just got out of prison and is probably living in a half-a-way house or trailer those people are wealthy. The houses are also easier targets because of the new construction (many empty units and less likely to have cameras) AND their exact house floor plan with pictures is online.
