Found Deceased SC - Jessica Barnes, 20, not reported missing for weeks, Pendleton, July 2024 *arrest*

FEB 14. 2025
“You can see the tote being brought out of the poolhouse by Brandon Barnes with the assistance of Ms. Mims and Ms. Tippett,” Wescott said. “It’s put in the HHR … they were searching for a location to dispose of the remains before they ultimately ended at the location.”

Prosecutors say three of Jessica’s teeth and part of her jawbone were found at a site off of a hiking trail, while more of her remains were found in a 5-gallon bucket on the property where all three suspects lived. Wescott testified that the group initially tried to dig a hole to bury Jessica’s remains but ultimately burned them.

The hearing for 20-year-old Victoria Tippett and 20-year-old Kendall Mims was held in Anderson County last Friday (February 14, 2025). The proceedings exposed harrowing details of a murder that began as a missing person investigation – but evolved into a tragic tale of violence and deception
Noting:
  • Tippett was present during the murder along with the infant child of Brandon Barnes and Kendall Mims.
  • Mims was at work during the murder and when she returned home, was told that Jessica had died by suicide.
  • Jessica's body was placed in a plastic tote purchased by Barnes and Tippett from Walmart, along with a shovel.
  • The purchase was confirmed by bank records as well as surveillance video from the store.
  • Ring camera footage at the home of Mims’ grandfather, RH, showed all three suspects moving the tote to the car.
  • The tote was transported to Twin Lakes Drive.
  • Using data from a tracker placed on a vehicle by RH, LE determined the site was repeatedly visited by the suspects.
  • After police began their investigation, the same tracker showed the three suspects fleeing to CO.'
  • While they were gone, LE placed a trail camera at the site where Jessica's remains were found.
  • When they returned from CO, their first stop was where they had burned and disposed of Jessica's body.

Two young women who Pendleton police say helped cover up their roommate’s murder appeared in bond court this week.

*****
Tippett appeared in circuit court for a bond hearing on Monday. The state argued during Monday’s circuit court bond hearing that they believe Tippett is a danger to the community and a flight risk.

The judge denied Tippett’s motion for bond but granted her leave to re-file in six months.

*****
Mims appeared in circuit court for a bond hearing on Thursday. The state said it was concerned she would be a flight risk, but also said Mims has been cooperative in the investigation.

*****
The judge granted bond for Mims, setting it at $75,000. When released, she will have to wear an ankle monitor and cannot have any contact with her co-defendants.

A woman accused of helping burn her roommate’s body has received an additional charge from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

SLED said 21-year-old Kendall Mims was charged with destruction, desecration or removal human remains on April 16 in connection to the 2024 murder of 20-year-old Jessica Barnes.

*****
Mims was issued a $25,000 surety bond and is on hold for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said Mims was initially charged with accessory after the fact, obstruction of justice and misprision of a felony, according to the department in Anderson County.

Just six days after S.C. circuit court judge Jessica Salvini granted Kendall Mims, 21, a $75,000 surety bond in Anderson County, she found herself in front of a judge in Pickens County facing a new charge.

On April 16, 2025 — one day after her bond was posted — Mims was arrested and charged with destruction or removal of human remains under South Carolina code §16-17-600(A). The new charge adds a grim layer to the already disturbing allegations involving the death and disposal of the body of 20-year-old Jessica Barnes of Pendleton, S.C.

*****
Mims’ bond hearing was noteworthy thanks to the support she received from Jessica Barnes’ own mother, Cecilia Varvara, who told the court she supported the judge’s decision because she believed Mims was also a victim of Brandon Barnes.

*****
Now, one day after her bond was posted in Anderson County, Mims finds herself back in custody — this time facing a felony charge in a new jurisdiction.

Did this man child have that much control over these women? I understand that coercive control is very much a real thing, but at the point in time when the murder took place, you would think at least one of the girls would have asked for help immediately after from their parents especially KM who had a child.
