She gave us his first name, Roger, though I'm sure she knows his last name. He is no longer staying there.. he has moved to "The Hill" which is a drug infested area the manager told us is not pretty. I would be totally willing to go there, we were going to go there but MissJames and I discussed it and we just don't think he's there, it is nowhere near where the sightings have been.. would be a heck of a long walk for Johnny to keep going back and forth and we both agreed he'd probably moved on from this Roger guy once he'd moved. Though, if you all want me to check it out, I will. Let me know!

With all due respect OLG, there is a difference between a caring person and being a stupid person. JMO

I'm thinking maybe that's a job better left to the authorities. You two are awesome! ...but shouldn't put yourselves in danger.

Maybe the police could learn something from Roger, though, about what Johnny is thinking or where he may have gone next.

My son broke my computer yesterday so I'm on my phone and limited . I strongly expressed my concern about OLG going into thAt area. Even the manager of the motel discouraged the idea . As for the admin of the motel , let's just say this was not a motel 6 or Best Western .

Anyone in the area be on the lookout for A man with a golf type umbrella that is yellowish/orangish/white .it's overcast and rainy . A ws reader believes she may have seen Johnny with such an umbrella walking on a frontage Rd last Friday . At the the time he was near Old Town Pottery .

As for those who saw Johnny at the flea market , a man in a food booth said he mumbled . The other person who spoke to him said he just shook his head .
OLG , my dr. Confirmed your diagnosis , yesterday : (

Three places of interest in the same basic area of Surfside Beach:

The wooded area between Denny's and McDonalds.

Near the pier that is near Surfside Beach Resort.

Near Surfside Christian Church and the grassy area with the dip on N. Azalea off Hwy 17

I wish I could get back there , but if anyone in the area could go look and put up flyers in these areas that would be great,.

Surfside Beach Resort is at 15 S. Ocean Blvd. We believe Johnny was hanging near there and may go back looking for family .that's not the hotel they were staying at but Johnny may not realize it. We also believe ,based on talking to a waitress , that someone bought Johnny a beer at the Bar and Grill across the street .

There are places in the woods near Old Time Pottery that have places where it's obvious homeless sometimes stay (camp). We went behind old town pottery but maybe we didn't weren't in the right area . The mcdonalds is just in front of Old Town Pottery in the same parking lot . I think Denny's must be Just north so check the woods in between .
Dang, there is a fenced private parking back there and we almost went in , but it was private property .

I don't recognize the church but it's definitely worth checking out .

OLG,
Is "The Hill" in MB or Surfside? Just wondering on the general area. I am getting out as I can since my son drove my car down but it is still just two cars (one of which I don't drive) among 7 of us so I'm a little limited. But if I happen to be near any of these areas that are more questionable/safe when we're on our way elsewhere I can do a driveby when my husband or adult son are with me. The area I was in yesterday (behind the Community Kitchen going to the Rec center) certainly seemed similar to what you described but I know it's not "The Hill"...I definitely don't think you should check out these type of areas on your own.

I'm just sorry (from the gist I'm getting) that the police aren't seeming to be actively investigating, just going on tips. I know it's kind of like a needle in haystack for us but I would think the PD would have a much better idea and much better contacts suggesting specific areas he might have gravitated to or where he might have been taken in. Not bashing but just wishing there were more official activity. Maybe there is more going on that we're not aware of besides just "being on the lookout". That's what I'm hoping and praying. I think if he had committed crime they would have found him by now. Sorry if that sounds cynical.

I just spent about an hour talking to Johnny's dad and mom. I think all churches in the area may be a great place to look. Mr. Brown is a minister, and they go to many churches, taking Johnny. I believe he would be very comfortable finding a place to sleep in or near the churches. Don't know why I haven't thought of that b4. The family is planning on leaving Fri AM to go to MB. Has anyone heard anything about whether or not Tim Miller is still planning on coming to search? Who has been in touch with Equasearch?

if church congregations are aware of johnny being potentially in their area then that is many more eyes looking for him as well. So, talking to churches might be double duty.

TES usually works with the family and with the local law enforcement. The family should know when they are planning on being there .
The squeaky wheel ......

It may sound stupid but I think going to some of those wooded areas and yelling for Johnny might be worth a try .
We yelled his name and said Rubypop wanted him to come home to Cartersville and that his dog ,Blackie , was missing him .

Also leaving flyers in those areas, he may even see himself . It sounds like Friday morning to mid afternoon at the flea market in Surfside Beach would be worth staking out.

I hope to go back but I'm fighting an infection right now.

Nosysw , Brianna who did the interview with Johnnys mom , will do another story if there's something new in it . People from out of town putting up flyers would be new. If you or any of your family are willing I would encourage you to contact her. We were scheduled to do it Sunday but I got so sick sat night I felt I needed to be at home.

The weather in Charleston is awful and we are experiencing flooding . It's moved up to Georgetown and the MB area .
I hope Johnny is safe and that by seeking shelter he will be found!

Please , God, keep Johnny warm and safe .

  • #311
MissJames, I agree that going to these wooded areas and yelling for Johnny would be very good. If Johnny isn't found b4 Friday, I'm gonna try to go up then. It many be that afternoon. If anyone who is able to go wants to meet me up there that would be great. Nosysw, will you be available lat Fri, Sat, and maybe Sun?

Does anyone know if any posters have been put in the Walmart there in MB? Seems like that would be a good place for posters, as that is such well "visited" spot there. Brittanee Drexel's grandparents and family used to sit outside of Walmart and pass out posters I think. Just a thought. Praying Johnny comes home soon.

  • #313
Does anyone have an already drafted email about Johnny so I don't have to redo work? I'm going to start searching businesses and churches in the area he was last seen and start emailing.

BethInAK, Here is a previous post by Steely Dan that might be helpful. Also the poster by MissJames and OLG would also be good.

His sister Julie will be on Tricia's radio show tomorrow. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/websleuths The show normally lasts an hour but will go into the second hour so she can talk to Julie. I just got off the phone with Julie and put together a timeline of the case. Since this is coming from Julie I think this is the most accurate reporting we'll find.

The family arrived at the Seacrest hotel at 803 ocean blvd. on Thursday 8/2/2012. http://www.myrtlebeach-resorts.com/sea-crest/

On Friday at about 3:30pm Johnny said he was going to the “Family Kingdom Amusement Park” which is about two blocks away. He left his wallet and ID, and probably had about $20 on him total and no jewelry.

At 4:30pm the family went to dinner at a restaurant and when they got back they noticed Johnny hadn’t returned. They went looking for him up by the amusement park and continued to drive around looking for him until about 5:30 in the morning. While looking they saw two police officers and stopped them. The family told the officers that Johnny was missing and gave them a description of him and what he was wearing.

On Saturday morning, the 4th, a hotel worker told them that he had been across the street around 5:30pm on Friday. She didn’t know who he was or that he was missing. Johnny had said he was missing his family and went off in the opposite direction of the amusement park. The hotel worker also saw him on her way into work that morning. She told them he was sitting on the curb by a bank.

The family left to look for him and got there about 3:30pm. They stopped into nearby stores to ask about him. They found out he’d been at the BBQ place next to the bank and the BBQ place had fed him at about 12:30pm and they had just missed him by about three hours.

Friday night about 10pm he had been stopped by police in Surfside off the bypass near Georgetown because he was walking alone down the highway. (He had gotten there by taking a cab, but the driver found out he had no money and she wouldn’t take him any farther because she couldn’t understand him, but she didn’t call the cops on him either.) The missing persons report hadn’t gone through yet and they didn’t know about him being lost. He told the police about the Seacrest Hotel and they called the hotel to ask if anyone knew of a worker like him. Nobody knew a worker by that name and were unaware he was missing.

The family looked for him all day Saturday, but since they didn’t know he had gotten a cab the night before, they didn’t go all the way into Surfside.

When the grandkids got home on Sunday they found out he had called on Friday night from a Chic Fil-A, Arby’s and from a couple of cell numbers to his home in Georgia.

On Monday Julie contacted the Myrtle Beach police with the phone numbers he had called from. They tracked one of them to a beach store he had called from on Saturday the 4th about 9am. The family went to the store and ID’d him when they saw the surveillance video. That’s the last reliable sighting they’ve had of him.

There was a sighting on the 13th at Mcdonald’s in Surfside. A woman pulled up to the drivethru window and there was a man standing there at the ordering board, and she didn’t know anything about the case and rolled up windows and drove around. She was a little nervous about him. When she got home she turned on the news and saw a story about him and recognized him immediately. She called the Surfside PD and the police said it’s not their jurisdiction and to call Horry county. She called them but they told her it was Surfside PD she should call. She demanded they check it out, but they appear to have let it go. She called the news and left a message. The next morning she called Julie crying because she felt like she was responsible for not getting him help.

Another sighting was from someone calling from their home who had returned on the 14th of August after staying at the Seacrest hotel. They had stayed there for eight days and they think they saw him four or five times while there.

After that somebody said they saw him at the Conway soup kitchen between the 20th and 24th.

The latest possible sighting might have been at a Surfside flea market on early Friday morning the 24th.

TES is planning to come in and should be on the ground by Wednesday, but the Labor Day holiday may push it back to the 7th or 8th.

If you see him tell him “Ruby Pops”, “Blackie”, “Rev.” and Julieanne are looking for you. Call home Johnny. Stay with him. He’s afraid of police so call the number on the poster first. Julieanne’s number is: 404-576-6306.

Some identifying characteristics are that he will always nod his head. He looks down and messes with his ankles. If you ask him do you live in Cartersville Georgia he’ll know it.

Since the picture on the poster was taken he may have grown a beard, his hair would be thicker and he might be wearing a beige camouflage hat and may look very tired and disoriented.

The people in their town have been helping out with expenses so they can go back on the 31st and stay until the 3rd or 4th to continue looking. They had to leave on the 14th of August earlier.

I don't know If his poster has been put up there . It's a great idea but IMO it will take a lot more people involved to handle all these wonderful ideas . I live an hour and half away from Surside Beach . OLG a little closer but taking college classes .
Nosysw is there on vacation with a bunch of people : )

I wish I could do this 24/7 . Johnnys family and Nonni Brenda will be there this weekend .
If y'all could just see how many places there are in that area , you'd have a better idea of how limited just 2 or 3 people are .

I don't know what the MBPD are doing so I don't want to criticize . As I've said before , their hands may tied to some extent . Maybe this is a learning experience for all of us . That's how better procedures come about , like Code Adam and Amber Alerts.
Yes, I would like to see an all out effort as you would with a lost child , but I don't know what they might know.

The thing is , it's often civilians who find missing people , either by simply coming upon them or by organized searches .

I never thought I personally would find Johnny, but I wanted to make as many people aware as possible , especially in the areas where there were possible sightings .
How can anyone watch that video of the interview with Johnnys mother , and not want to do something if they can? Especially WS members . We are inspired here every single day .

Hi, SF!! I did speak to people outside and inside Walmart and also gave them a flyer to put up. I went back yesterday and it was prominently posted there which made me very happy. This was the Walmart right as you're coming into the heart of MB on 501. I believe there are a couple more on the outskirts.

I didn't get much accomplished today as it was my nephew's birthday and rained most of the day but I hope to do some more tomorrow.

I just can't believe it's been so long and poor Johnny is still out there scared and wandering and maybe thinking his family has forgotten him...and the weather has been so yucky but at least it hasn't been nearly as hot as it usually is. I'm praying tonight will be the night we get some good news... :prayer:

nosysw, why do I get the feeling that you're using this as an excuse to not go back to NJ?

Don't go there Steely :maddening:

You know I'm a Jersey Girl by birth and choice...although I consider South Carolina my home away from home. I tried NY but it just wasn't so awesome, dude, lol!

But seriously, I will use your info to get in touch with Brianna...thanks!
