SC SC - Johnny Lamar Brown, 44, Myrtle Beach, 3 Aug 2012 - #2

Not at all. A few hours of my time is nothing compared to the time all of you have put in trying to find Johnny. Do you all think the MBPD poster is the appropriate one to use here?
http://p2c.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/p2c...ease_Brown.pdf

I do,but that's just my 2 cents . They have jurisdiction over this case and could involve local LE as needed.

It would be wonderful if you could get posters up around Charleston. :tyou:

I put up posters along HWY 17 North of Mt. Pleasant . My experience was that most stores and gas stations have bulletin boards or places to put up fliers ,but not out front :waitasec:

The Sewee Center that has the wolf viewing area let me put one on the glass door at the entrance.

The whole thing is a bummer! Is anyone else sad that we don't even know if he is still really missing? :notgood:

I don't have a high level of confidence that the public would find out if he is no longer missing.
There's a difference between returning home and being found. A missing person could be located yet not return home.

We may never know. :banghead:

is anyone else sad that this thread is no longer an "ACTIVE SEARCH"
such a bummer.

There may be,but we don't know it.
Unless it comes out in the news we can no longer pass on what we know or what we we've been told. .

I did do a Topix post for him in Charleston (and Atlanta, Cartersville, MB, and Ninety Six, SC). I haven't been down that way in awhile but will be going there in a couple of weeks to pick up someone at the airport. If he's not located by then, I can bring some posters with me.

There's heavy road construction on Hwy 17 N. From Mt. Pleasant on up . I handed out some fliers to roadside crews because they see people who are walking along the HWY.

I handed out some fliers to some landscape crews on my first search trip to MB.

I think anyone that feels comfortable doing this ,it's one way to get Johnny's info out to people who have a chance of seeing him.

As I posted before ,shops weren't keen on putting the fliers in the front or on the doors .

This was all done in the first weeks after we heard about Johnny missing ,so a fresh round of fliers may be a good idea, but I'm putting out where I covered in case others don't want to duplicate.

:great: It does my heart good to see a renewed interest in getting more info out there :loveyou:

We need the media on this. If Nancy could just cover this case for a few minutes one night, it would get the attention of some who don't follow WS. It's just so discouraging that very few seem to be interested. When I clicked on the link to here, he was the last thread on the front page. I am hereby bumping him up!
I know there is not much more we can talk about, and some of you who are near MB are still trying and doing what you can, but sadly, it seems like Johnny just fell off the ends of the earth. I have a big fear in my heart that something has happened to him, or he's not even in that area anymore. He could have started trying to walk home, and went the wrong way and got lost somewhere.
Johnny, where are you? I pray for you every night.

I wonder if the poster next to the red car with the familys phone numbers is making people not take this seriously. Maybe they think if he was a "real" missing person, his poster would be from the FBI or something? I found out from the Cartersville UNCUT FB page that 2 weeks from today, saturday November 3, there are 4 events going on in Cville - a flower show, crafts fair, sporting clay tournament (i guess that's shooting?) and a pet portrait thing. What if we showed up en masse (you know all eight of us-HAHA!) and passed out flyers at all of these events. Maybe we could get the local news to do a story as well. He's just as likely to be in GA by now as he is to be in SC. Maybe the family would get wind of it and pop their heads in for a hot minute! Any thoughts? Wait, how far is it from Lynchburg, VA to Cville? - shoulda checked that first before I started flapping my big mouth.:blushing::blushing::blushing:

Got some flyers up yesterday and I'll try to get some more out today. Leaving town for about 10 days tonight so what I can't finish today will have to wait. Maybe by the time I get back, there will already be good news about Johnny!

Thank you so much CodeSiren. Here's praying your fliers will be what brings Johnny home safely. Have a safe trip...:seeya:

maureen, I think that's a wonderful idea...I do have an extra bedroom here. Everyone bring a sleeping bag. We could plan a "Help Find Johnny Lamar Brown" rally at our Dellinger Park. Maybe Johnny will show up, and we can have that big celebration we've all been talking about. We can wish can't we? LOL :yesss::yesss::yesss::yesss::yesss::yesss:

I think I'm up too late. Nite all.

Oh my! Well, I must confess I just looked at a map of GA and saw where Cville is -:what:. This whole time, I have been thinking all he had to do was head south along the coast and he would find his way home!:banghead::banghead:. I couldn't have been more wrong! This is much more complicated! OK, I'm officially depressed, I'm going to bed!:pullhair::pullhair::pullhair::pullhair:

There is a missing truck driver alert FB page!!!! I'm posting!!

  • #732
I think it would be helpful if people checked out his new FB page, like it, and pass it on to anyone they know. The two young men who are missing from the Carolinas have thousands of likes and the support of so many. I wish Johnny had that kind of exposure. What's the difference? The boys seemingly left willingly to drive to the beach and their situation is scary because no one has heard from them, but Johnny has special needs, no money, a speech impediment, and left on foot. Perhaps it's because the boys' families have been so active in doing whatever they can to find them? Something is wrong if Johnny Brown doesn't matter as least as much as any other missing person. I hope some of the new flyers being put out and the truckers will be a big help in bringing Johnny home. I pray that it's not too late for him.

Is it because he's black and poor? I like Black and Missing's FB page and they feel very strongly that black people do not get the exposure pretty blondes do when they go missing. I hope and pray that that is not true. When Jessica Ridgeway was still missing, B&M posted on their page how many Google hits you would get if you typed in her name compared to how many if you typed Jhessye Shockley. I didnt think that was a fair comparison because Jhessye went missing over a year ago, so, I type Gabrielle Swainson who has had network coverage and she had far fewer hits. Part of that may be because a lot of people think they know the answer in Gabby's case , that she is dead and the handyman did it. No sense looking for her. Meanwhile, there is a maniac on the loose in Colorado. I think we probably tend to be more interested in people who look like us, I'm more interested when a woman goes missing because women are so much more at risk and I imagine if it was me. When Gabby was getting network exposure, someone on B&M posted- Oh, Thank God, a black person finally went missing! Maybe we should all try to step outside of our comfort zones a little more and realize people are people and their hearts ache just like ours do. I invite you all to come over to the b&m page, maybe we should all try to get our black friends more involved in stuff like this, acting more as advocates for people who look like them? Just for my own Knowledge, you certainly don't have to answer, is anybody on this page black? At work, they call me the whitest woman in America, that's my picture there as my avatar!:floorlaugh: Oh well, let me drag my soapbox back to the kitchen! See you all later!

When Adji Desir went missing, his case made national news and was on the NG show. He has never been found.
Hassani Campbell's story has been featured numerous times. He has never been found.
Isabel Celis disappeared and has not been found. She has been in the news.
Brian Wehrie of Carrolton disappeared and his case is no longer top news.
The three Skelton boys, Tanner, Alexander and Andrew, went missing and have not been found.
Trenton Duckett from FL has never been found.
The Jamison family in OK have never been found.
Brittanee Drexel, Lindsey Baum, Hailey Dunn, Joshua Davis, Ayla, Lisa....
Black, white, hispanic, girls, boys, men, women, babies.

I could go on and on with cases that have died out even when they have had national attention. It's not because people don't care and not because of race or sex or age or rich or poor. People do care and when they know about a case, they will research and rehash every bit of clues and information they can find to help solve it.

You can only go over and over the same things so long. If no news, tips or stories are put out in the media, people will eventually go with the next or newest case where they feel they can help more. That's not saying they have forgotten about the case. Older cases are still being monitored and when something breaks in a case, everyone will jump back in again. An example of that is the Hailey Dunn case when human remains were discovered nearby. WS was mobbed by everyone hoping and believing it was her, but sadly it wasn't. She's still missing.

Most cases that are highly publicized are because of interaction between LE and the family/friends and the media.

In the case of the two missing boys going to Myrtle Beach, the family is highly involved and are keeping everyone hopping with their updates. In Johnny's case though, we have just not had any news updates or help from family or friends or tips to keep his case more active in a long time.

Hopefully, he will be found with the new flyers being posted now.

I think that is our biggest problem- we are not getting help from the family! And not just us, I don't see that they are doing anything to look for him? Since I started the FB page, whenever someone from Cville likes it or comments, I ask them what the family is doing, is it in the local news, etc. So far, not one person has answered. By the way, it is sooo funny posting as 2 different people on FB. I'll have JLB say something and then Maureen comes in and tells JLB what a brilliant thought that was -HAHA! It gets confusing too, I'll go to comment on something from one of MY friends and they'll be like, Who is the black man and why is he looking at my baby's pictures? I'm constantly looking to see if I'm Maureen or Johnny!!

But everyone thought (and still does) that Casey murdered Caylee, and look at how much media attention and interest that case generated....

I definitely think there is a racial bias in the media. People use cases like Jhessye or Gabby's case to prove why there isn't, because they've received national coverage, but I can name 50+ cases of missing white women & children who haven gotten more media coverage.

I agree with you, but it's kinda like "preaching to the choir." We're the ones still looking for him. I don't know what race we all are, I'm sure we're average...I pray it isn't a race thing. We're all the same. :seeya:

I agree with everything you've said. I've followed many cases on here and some stay active for a long time, while others get maybe 20 posts over a week's time and die out. I think, for the most part, posters tend to flock to the threads where there are at least a few eye-popping details to talk about.
People love to speculate about a husband killing their wife, or a child being kidnapped or a young woman raped and murdered, but when it comes to a black man with special needs... it's not that sensational after awhile. So some just moved to different threads.

Some of the lack of interest is, like you said, the interaction between the family, the police and the media. Nobody from the media is interviewing Johnny's family. The family are not seeking out the media, and the cops are not giving updates on anything. It's like no one cares anymore except a few here on WS. Oh, I'm sure his family cares, but maybe they've been brushed off by LE in either place. LE in his home state can't do much, it's not their case, but they could get the word out to the LE in S.C. to just be on the lookout for him. And the media could run a couple of paragraphs in the paper or give a short blurb on the news in both places and get some attention.

I don't care that he's black, I wouldn't care if he was green and purple polka-dotted, he's a human being and he has to be out there somewhere. If he has passed on, God forbid, he still needs to be found and taken home to GA to be laid to rest properly.

This is MOO, but I'm sticking to it!

This case confuses me because I don't understand why he stopped calling his home number for help. That really worries me. We know he called home initially. So why did he stop?

I hope that is not really bad news. I can't figure out if it is because he is no longer able to call OR if he does not want to .

  • #740
Having raised 3 white girls ,1 white boy and 3 black boys ,I know there is a difference in how the black boys can be treated differently, especially when we are shopping .

I think Johnny being a grown man may be making a difference .
Being a black man probably hasn't helped .

The media definitely covers white girls the most ,and the longest .

I thought that Johnny would get SOME national attention because he is special needs . It's really all very sad .
