'Walking dead' robber, covered in mud, caught on video attempting break in

A man who was caught on surveillance video apparently trying to break into a home in South Carolina looked like something out of "The Walking Dead," according to the homeowner.

"Watch this video, this is my front door," Savannah Brotherton, who lives in Myrtle Beach, posted to Facebook, alongside the footage on Thursday night. "What a Friday night."

The video showed the man, apparently covered in mud, forcefully and "with so much aggression" slamming his body into the front door. He did it three times before falling over, backward, onto a railing along the front porch.

The woman said she was baking Christmas cookies at home when she heard a bang on the door, then noticed the man outside. She said she'd just installed the surveillance system two days beforehand.

Brotherton called police, and Myrtle Beach Police Cpl. Tom Vest told the news station they found the man in a nearby ditch.

The officer said police determined the man needed medical attention, and he was transported to a hospital. No arrests were made; Vest said the man's condition put into question the man's intent.

His parents must be so proud... :/ On a more positive note, it looks like he got some immediate justice in that he seems to have knocked himself out before staggering backward and collapsing...:D

The article said he wasn’t arrested due to his medical condition. What??

I don’t care what his problem was, Medical, drugs, bath salts, he did not live at that residence and was trying to break in! When did it become acceptable to scare the resident to death in their own home and let the perp go?

Let’s hope there is a follow up story and this man was arrested. What is this world coming to!

Did he smell cookies baking? Lol

What would have happened if he was able to break into the home? He looked scary dangerous.

Did the man have a medical condition before or after trying to break the door down? It sounds like he had a medical condition before trying to break the door down, but he definitely looked like he had a medical condition afterwards. Kwim?

I would hope he'd be arrested if he was drugged or intoxicated. So, that leads me to believe he may be suffering from Mental Illness. If the latter is the case, I certainly hope the man is getting psychiatric treatment.

I also have to say I'm thankful Brotherton called LE instead of shooting blindly through the door. Now the man has the opportunity to get help for his condition.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department tweeted on 12/24 that they'd like the public's help in finding the suspect (AS) on a warrant for attempted burglary.

That certainly looks like him, but are you certain that's the same guy? I think this is the original news story:

‘I thought I was going to have to kill him’: Woman relives holiday nightmare

In this article, I get the impression the man was injured trying to break the door down (concussion, maybe?) rather than having a prior medical condition. But, it also says the case was closed. I can understand LE wanting to get the man medical attention for his injuries, but would they close the case without knowing his intent? Did they later re-open the case and get a warrant for his arrest after they determined he had criminal intent?

Looks like it’s him. SB shared him on her Facebook as well.

I'm positive it's the same person -- the homeowner retweeted the MBPD tweet on her own twitter account. I bet the case was "reopened" because there was an outcry over them letting the suspect go without charges.

(Google the suspect's name, you'll find some prior arrest info and mugshots...)

*Probably he’s just counting his money to check if he can buy that venti salted caramel mocha frappucino with five pumps of frap roast, one pump of maple pecan sauce, two pumps of caramel sauce, two pumps of caramel syrup, three pumps of mocha, one pump of toffee nut syrup, triple blended with extra whipped cream? :p

He's only 18. Where'd he get all that money? I have a good guess. Robbing people and selling their property, probably to buy drugs?

How scary that he was so bold to try to break into an occupied home. Makes me think of the Closs family in Wisconsin.

Whose the person waiting on him or watching him from the sidewalk?

The more I watch it, it looks fake like a funny YouTube video.

Where is the person you see on the sidewalk? There's some sort of banner blowing in the breeze at the base of the stairs. Could that be what you're seeing?

“Vest explained intent is needed in order to charge someone with a crime and the man’s condition put his intent in doubt.”
His intent was a Home Invasion! and the “if in doubt” was Possible Murder.

Folks this is another good reason to have DEAD BOLT LOCKS
on all your exterior doors.
Criminals know that many times you can kick or slam the doors
open.
