GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina)
- Greenville County deputies are searching for a boy they say went missing near the YMCA Camp in Greenville Thursday night.

GCSO says 9-year-old Matthew Yarbrough was reported missing around 6 p.m. while attending the camp at 100 YMCA Camp Road. Search and Rescue Teams are actively searching for Matthew now.

He was last seen wearing a dark or navy-colored shirt, gray shorts, and gray New Balance shoes.

According to Jimmy Jones with Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue, crews have scaled back their search for the night and will resume at 7:30 a.m. on Friday. Jones says helicopters, ATVs, and drones with flare capabilities have aided in the search.

Jones notes crews searched the entire camp and immediate area around it, with plans to expand their search radius in the morning.

Anyone who knows where Matthew is should call GCSO immediately.

GCSO is joined by Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue, Connestee Fire Rescue, and Transylvania County Sheriff's Office.

The camp later sent out this statement to FOX Carolina:

“At YMCA Camp Greenville, the safety and well-being of children in our care always has been and always will be a top priority. We alerted the authorities this afternoon as soon as we learned that he was missing and have been focusing all our efforts on the search and rescue mission to locate him. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.”

Just woke up and saw this on the news. They need to post guards around all water sources. In fact, they should have done that overnight. I'm upset they called off the search until 7:30am. It's light enough to see before 6am. :-( Sorry, I mean no disrespect to the search leaders, and I know they're also trying to keep searchers safe, but he could be anywhere by now, and with autism, no water source is safe. Stay put, Matthew!

Also, if the search team sets up a perimeter and won't allow the public to search inside the perimeter (I don't know that that's the case, just IF they do that), I urge Matthew's family to search water sources outside the perimeter.

OMG, I didn't realize where that camp was located. It's in pure wilderness. This video shows just how dark that area is, so I guess I will have to amend my thoughts about having searchers out all night. Please, though, I'm praying for them to post watches at the water sources.

Very detailed video of the search. I'm impressed with the search effort! They actually did search throughout the night.

Matthew was found by staff on a neighboring kids' camp's property, about two miles away. He covered himself with leaves overnight to stay warm and tried to follow the water back to the lakes, but was accidentally going the wrong direction. Bless his heart. Hug a tree! Stay put! Teach your kids...

The boy had obviously learned some survival skills in the YMCA.
