The State Law Enforcement Division is assisting officials in McCormick County after human remains were found there last week.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry said Monday the agency was called in by the sheriff’s office to aid in their investigation. The remains were discovered last week near the intersection of Upper Mill Road and Highway 67.

Officials said an autopsy was slated for Monday, but the person’s identity was not immediately known.

Berry said the remains were “badly decomposed,” and said the case remained active.

This actually turned out to be two bodies, Ruth Huetter, 48, and her boyfriend, Nathan Smith. The deaths are being treated as homicides.
