GUILTY SC - Nine killed in Emanuel AME Church shooting, Charleston, 2015; Dylann Roof GUILTY #3

http://www.postandcourier.com/charl...cle_35dfb694-b719-11e6-82ad-1f849d85769b.html

Dylann Roof is highly intelligent and objected to his defense team raising recent questions about his mental competency, according to a judge's newly unsealed order that allowed the accused Emanuel AME Church shooter to represent himself.
U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel wrote that he found Roof has an "extremely high IQ" and no cognitive impairment.

Gergel, who is presiding over Roof's federal death penalty trial, verbally granted Roof's request to represent himself on Monday just as jury selection was set to begin. The written order provides more detail about Roof's prior competency hearing and Gergel's reasons for allowing Roof to act as his own attorney.

"While repeatedly asking Defendant to confirm his desire to represent himself, the Court closely observed Defendant's demeanor. Defendant was alert, focused, and confident as he expressed his resolve to represent himself," Gergel wrote in the redacted version of his order released Wednesday.

Thanks, Spellbound, I think that may well be the article where his mental capacity was discussed, i.e., "highly intelligent," along with the other informative discussion of the case.

 • #123
This has probably already been said here but high intelligence and mental illness are not mutually exclusive.

I dunno, he said like 4 words on the initial video, and from what have heard he has spent most of trial looking down at the desk.

The judges capacity to make a statement is kinda based on limited interaction.

The longest interaction (if you will!) was in his confession, and clearly there were aberrations as it relates to affect, memory, time concepts, and an inordinate amount of time needed, consistently ,to respond to simple probes.

His "worries" while facing 8 murder charges were extraordinarily child- like. Where would he sleep, what would he wear when they took his clothes , wanting mommy etc etc.

When discussing the permission to search his car, he said something like maybe I am hurting my case ( or something like that) when an hour earlier he had clearly stated that he did it. IMO, that indicates he is not really grasping the intensity of the situation he is in.

Same kind ot thought processes were evident when he refused to answer questions about drug history. Most would know that multiple murder charges would trump over RX pill abuse, amd would add nothing to his predicament seems as if it would be something a 19 year old would be aware of.

The notion of surprise when told pictures would be required, IMO was also, for a 19 year old , just unique. A five year old might be surprised, a 19 year being taken aback, unaware, that in a murder trial some pictures would be part of the process is curious at best.

When asked repeatedly throughout the confession at what point did he decide to murder a bunch of people, he was unable to identify when that occurred.

I would think when a decision was made to go kill people that would be a "moment" one would recall.

His concern over the location of his drivers license was, in light of the situation, IMO,was bizarre, as well.

His need to complete the ninth grade twice, and then stopping IMO indicates some limitations in academia.

His handwriting is childish.

Wearing jeans over sweat pants , when it was 99 degrees that day, is most certainly peculiar. Near the end of the confession, the investigator discussed if those were sweat pants under his jeans.

FRI 6/17

Actual Temp
99°

The only notion of some "smartness"(!) was when he was regurgitating thoughts, from others, online regarding AA history. Even those statements were concrete, i.e being able to recite dates, that is a different kind of thinking.

As opposed to being able to incorporate broad themes and integrate them into thoughtful conclusions as opposed to mere repeating simple facts. .

There is def no relationship between mental illness and IQ IMO. IQ determination must be administered by a highly trained individual!

But, only mo, when the confession is looked at in a cohesive whole, there are definite indications of some learning deficits.

IQ:

The four areas identified are verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory and processing speed.

I truly do not believe he will follow through with handling the next phase by himself. He cant look any of the victims in the eyes - so how exactly is he going to handle it?

He has three weeks to ponder and jmo one of his biggest fears is looking "dumb".

Again, his thinking that he can be his own attorney is also indicative of failure to grasp the big picture, and certainly does not indicate an individual with an high IQ and or bright!

I also think he will step down at the 11th hour. That's what I'm hoping for anyway.

Dylann Roof Says Psychology Is 'Jewish Invention,' Won't Present Mental Health Evidence in Trial

"Dylann Roof, who considers psychology a “Jewish invention,” said he will not ask jurors to consider his mental health when they decide whether or not to sentence him to the death penalty for the murders of nine black worshipers at a Charleston, South Carolina church...

“It is a Jewish invention and does nothing but invent diseases and tell people they have problems when they don’t,” Roof wrote, according to reports including from the Associated Press..."

U.S. executions hit 25-year low as capital punishment wanes: study

"The number of U.S. executions fell to a quarter-century low in 2016 as new death sentences plummeted, indicating capital punishment is on the decline, a study released on Wednesday showed.

The number of U.S. executions in 2016 was 20, the lowest since 1991, according to the study from the Death Penalty Information Center, which monitors capital punishment...
Legal battles and a sales ban on execution drugs will likely hold down the number of executions next year while the high costs of death penalty cases is set to keep capital punishment prosecutions down as district attorneys instead seek sentences of life in prison without parole, legal experts said.

"America is in the midst of a major climate change concerning capital punishment," said Robert Dunham, the center's executive director and the report author..."

THE SYNCRONICITY

Sometimes images or plotlines appear in the mass media that seem to eerily presage real life events. The most famous example of this is the episode of the "Lone Gunmen" TV show where the terrorists plan to fly a plane into the twin towers--aired before 9/11!

See here:

youtube;IIdhoc0PRr8]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIdhoc0PRr8

These are known as "synchronicities," and there is also one for the AME church massacre. That would be this scene from the movie "Kingsman: The Secret Service" which came out six months before the Charleston attack.

Interestingly the movie-scene massacre was due to covert mind control, which I also suspect played a role in the real-life killing spree.

I attended a concert of Handel's Messiah last evening.

As I looked around the church at everyone with open hearts and their faces filled with joy I thought of the moments during the prayer circle in Emanuel Church just before the beautiful worshipers were gunned down.

It was fitting for me to pray again for the victims and their families. I continue to send prayers.

As Dylann Roof awaits sentencing, note from his car haunts Midlands community

"On Wednesday, the convicted Charleston church shooter, Dylann Roof, will be back in court ahead of his sentencing. Jurors will soon decide whether Roof gets life in prison or the death penalty.

Meanwhile, a piece of evidence released during his recent trial continues to haunt a small Midlands community.

During that trial, prosecutors showed a number of notes found in Roof's car after he was arrested outside Charlotte just a day after the massacre in June of last year.
One of the handwritten lists had 'Emanuel AME' on it, along with the names of other Charleston churches. Another note had the names and addresses of some churches in the Columbia area.

Yet another note had the name of an historic African-American festival on it – a festival near and dear to the hearts of many in the small Calhoun County town of Lone Star, which is northeast of Orangeburg. There, each second Friday in August, hundreds gather for a picnic: the Good Hope Picnic.

"We usually have about 800 to a thousand community members out here,” said Albert Fowler, the co-executive vice president of the picnic...."

Unrepentant and Radicalized Online: A Look at the Trial of Dylann Roof

"Dylann Roof’s plan was simple. The 21-year-old wanted to start a race war, following the same demented path as infamous white supremacists before him.

He bought a .45 caliber Glock handgun with money his parents gave him for his 21st birthday and practiced shooting in his South Carolina backyard, taking selfies of himself with Confederate flags. Then, like an increasing number of extremists bent on racial violence, Roof decided to be a lone wolf.

He made a list of potential targets, ultimately picking one of the oldest, historically significant black churches in the South where he hoped to kill as many parishioners as possible. He took along 88 hollow-point bullets, symbolizing Heil Hitler, hoping his act would precipitate racial violence. He expected to encounter police, so he saved a few bullets for himself, intending to commit suicide like so many mass killers have done.

While his storyline may sound familiar to other premeditated acts of U.S. racial violence, there is one largely new component. He wasn’t radicalized by shaving his head bald and joining a neo-Nazi skinhead gang.He didn’t attend Ku Klux Klan rallies to soak up hatred around burning crosses. Nor did he attend Aryan Nations churches where the racist religion of Christian Identity is preached. Dylann Storm Roof learned to hate online.

Roof used a computer to research racial crimes committed on white victims. He walked away with the convoluted notion that a race war going to be his answer..."

Dylann Roof expected to speak at hearing in preparation for sentencing phase of trial

"CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC
The Columbia-area man who killed nine black parishioners at a Charleston church will go before a judge on Wednesday to prepare for the sentencing phase of his hate crimes trial.

Dylann Roof, 22, is expected to represent himself when the jury returns on Jan. 3 to decide if he should get the death penalty. Roof has until then to change his mind and have his highly experienced, anti-death penalty lawyer David Bruck take over.

But before then, he’ll attend a pretrial conference at 10 a.m., at the Charleston federal courthouse. Details on what the hearing will entail were not included in the Dec. 19 order by presiding U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel..."

I was thinking about why Roof would not want his psychological testing revealed in his trial.

I think that Roof does not want the jurors to know anything about his mental status because he thinks his reasons for the murder of those 9 innocent people is not because he has some sort of mental problem, but because he feels what he did was for a legitimate cause, that came to a legitimate conclusion. He has an agenda and, for him, it has nothing to do with a cognitive impairment. He might even try to argue his cause in court to the witnesses he will question (if he does represent himself in the next phase of the trial, that is), although I wouldn't think the judge will allow it, IMO. The defense thinks a mental condition might save his life, but Roof wants nothing to do with that; then his "cause" will be meaningless and will be just the ravings of a lunatic.

Dylann Roof has told a judge he plans on calling no witnesses and presenting no evidence to try to convince a jury to spare his life for killing nine black Charleston church worshippers in a hate crime.

Roof told U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel at a hearing Wednesday he still plans to act as his own lawyer when the penalty phase of his federal death penalty trial begins next Tuesday.
