I really think we need to start studying these mass shooters in detail now more than ever before. They tend to follow a pattern of being white, middle class loners who usually have obsessive tendencies with violence and guns.

It still to this day freaks me out how little we actually know to this day about Adam Lanza, thr sandy hook killer. No online footprint, testimonies of friends or even acquaintances or people he conversed with online, nothing.

I think when something like this occurs it's easy for society as a whole to say "they're evil, don't pay them any attention! Why should we care about such bad people and learn about them?" And just ignore it despite it happening again and again. My brains frazzled from lack of sleep, someone please tell me I'm making sense please?! Haha

Do we have any more info about the shooters parents and/or family? I have an inkling he was estranged from his sister and wasn't invited to the wedding (I remember reading it somewhere but am currently at work so can't find a link - sorry!)

That's definitely an interesting possibility. I just thought that when he drove off he was going to go to another target to kill more? Considering the guy wanted to start a race war, you'd think he would want to kill as many people as possible instead of a small bible study class JMO

I wonder if perhaps Roof wasn't racist all of his life, and this was a recent (and extreme) turn of views? I know a few people who say they dislike black people, and most of them when asked why would give an example of where they've been robbed or got into fights and the other person just happened to be black so it coloured their views. (Excuse the pun)

I sure hope weed is not blamed on his actions. Clearly, he was dangerous and should have never had a gun in his possession.

this link verifies that the gunman actually bought the gun himself in a charleston gun shop with money he was given for his birthday, despite false earlier reports.........

even though he had been arrested for drugs earlier in the year and they were felony charges, he had not yet been proven guilty or adjudicated and therefore he passed the background check and purchased the gun legally..........

now can we lay this matter to rest? it was haggled over a billion times at the beginning of this case........the gun has been traced to the gun shop and HE bought it

he was not convicted nor adjudicated as of yet, therefore it was legal for him to purchase it at that time (yeah i know :facepalm

I have nothing to add except to say that I truly believe there is real evil in this world and in this situation we are looking directly at it.
There is no explanation to be found in science or politics or education etc.
Evil cannot be stopped.
Gun laws are in place but they don't stop it.
It has always existed among us and sadly it always will.

He looks pretty much like every racist I've met when they go on a rant. Its the same look I see at family reunions when people start ranting about Trayvon Martin or Obama. Their faces get cold and frozen, their eyes glaze over, spittle flying, etc. If these people only knew how they appear to others. Their appearance just oozes hate. But, yeah, the eyes. Racists eyes always look like that when they're discussing their true beliefs. They do know how to compartmentalize, though. They know how to appear normal, jovial and friendly when they're in situations where they know expressing their beliefs is inappropriate.

As a middle aged, midwestern-looking woman, racists often mistake me for someone who shares their sick beliefs. When they get going on a rant, I'm almost always afraid for my own safety. I usually try to get away as quickly as possible and fear that, if I challenge them, they will harm me. They always invade your personal space, get up in your face. Once they realize you don't share their beliefs, its like a curtain comes down and they appear normal again.

But how do we recognize them even before they act and are unknown to any of us? According to the Southern Poverty Law Center there are several hate groups in our country but most of them just preach and brainwash others about their twisted evil hate and most do not act violently against the ones they hate.

While Mass Murders do happen they don't happen nearly as often as the one on one murders in this country which is a total of about 14-15K murdered each year. We cant even identify those murderers beforehand and know they are going to kill so I am not sure there is a way to find and stop these lone mass murderers who don't strike nearly as often. And in this country you cant arrest others for their beliefs even if they are hated filled. Even hate groups are followed by the SPLC and even they cant predict which ones in the hate groups will resort to murder. I wish there really was a way to stop these mass shooters or those who stabbed several victims to death before they strike. Or a way to stop all murderers before they kill innocent people but I don't think there is a way.

The problem is police cant arrest everyone that may act strange or even those who may be racists until they do a criminal act. That is the reality we have to live with although totally unnerving when things like this happens.

Even the experts cant predict beforehand who WILL become a murderer and who will not. Even if there are red flags it still not proof positive they will ever kill. They may only be ranters and racists verbally. The same way DV abusers may be grossly abusive but never resort to murdering the victim.

All any of us can do is report any kind of threats or strange behavior we may overhear made against anyone no matter their race to police but still there may be no evidence at the time to insure an arrest and no prediction they will ever commit horrendous crimes such as these.

We do see there are a lot of very strange people in our society today but most of them fortunately do not go on to be murderers.

Most mass murderers don't usually pick a specific race to target. When they enter gun free zones their intent is to shoot as many as they can regardless of race. I don't know what the statistic states about which race loses their life due to mass shooters more often but from the cases we have seen in recent years (not this one) most of the victims seem to be white. To the mass shooter at the time it really didn't matter which race the victims were. They were all free game for the mass shooter and if they were cornered where he or she was...then they were shot and no one was spared because of race even though most mass shooters tend to be young white males in their late teens, 20s or early 30s..
