He ran out of bullets.

Dylann Roof tried to kill himself during attack, victim's son says
http://touch.latimes.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-83832120/

During the attack at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C., on Wednesday night, suspected gunman Dylann Roof tried to kill himself, according to the son of one of the victims.

"He pointed the gun at his head and pulled the trigger, but it went 'click,'" because the chamber was empty, said Kevin Singleton, the son of 59-year-old Myra Thompson.

“His plan was never to leave that church,” Singleton said.

This is totally congurent with him asking if he shot her, and said good, tell them what happened here - I totally beleive his whole plan was to do it and die ---------------thats also mass murder profile ....

This one is hard to believe. When the mag on a semi-automatic handgun has run out of bullets, the slide moves backwards and is locked into place. This also locks the trigger--it can't be moved at all until you load another mag and slam the bolt home. A semi-automatic does NOT go "click" when it runs out of bullets. Revolvers do this, but not semi-autos.

There has been discussion if we think he was under the influence. There are some , IMO, indicators that that may have ben the case. Asking , in a small room, if 12 people "did I shoot you?", (compared to a football stadium) and the later statement that he did not realize he murdered that many people, does give me pause that he might have been messed up.

In addition, reports indicate multuple shots for each, makes me think he might have been high - in the setting and timeframes, a sober person would be able to keep track of who they did or did not shoot IMO

does not change his choices - but ........

How does South Carolina's justice system determine a death penalty ruling? Does the judge decide or is it up to the jury. States vary in how these sentences are decided. TIA

He was with them for an hour. Wouldn't they notice if he was high and ask if he needed some assistance?

I predict he will offer to plead guilty and accept LWOP to avoid the DP. If that happens, I for one hope they take it. I'm not sure a jury will give the DP to someone that young, and it would save the familys a lot of suffering. When he goes to prison, I think he will kill himself.
My opinion only.

When you're sentenced to death don't they put you into a single cell on death row? If that is the case, DR will definitely be safer there. That baby faced young man would be claimed by Big Bubba before he can make his bed. SMH

I don't think they necessarily would. People who are not often around "high" people may not notice.

As an example, a girl at work came up to me one day and said "man, he's high as a kite" talking about one of our co-workers. I was flabbergasted because I hadn't noticed. After that, when I started paying attention, I didn't know how I didn't notice before. And this is someone I work with daily.

And they didn't know him before so they didn't have knowledge of his normal (non-high) personality to compare how he was that night.

So I believe he could (and probably was) under the influence of something that night.

But that's just speculation on my part. I have no clue.

To seek the death penalty the decision in South Carolina is done the same way as all other states who have the death penalty. The Solicitor will make the decision whether this will be a death penalty case.

It will be the sole discretion of the Solicitor... who has the burden of proof not only to enter evidence in the trial to show he is guilty BARD but they also have to produce supportive evidence in the sentencing phase proving why the case is a death penalty case. There are different prongs that must be met. There is usually a list of those prongs to choose from and only one of them on the judicial list has to be met. Such as extremely cruel and inhumane or multiple defenseless victims etc.

Once the Solicitor informs the Presiding Judge that they plan to seek death... when the potential jury pool is brought in they have to be a death penalty qualified jury. Which means they have affirmed to the court they will consider the death penalty based on the aggravating factors and the mitigating factors. No one who doesn't believe in the death penalty will be allowed to sit on the case. They are asked those straight questions during jury questioning both written and orally.

The USSC has ruled that only a jury can sentence someone to death. A lone presiding Judge cannot impose death even if he had a bench trial and the Judge found him guilty. It has to be unanimous in SC iirc. In Florida it only has to be a majority vote but in SC I do believe it has to be 12 to sentence him to death.

I think it is very possible he did use a timer.

I could not imagine he had other people helping him because he feared that they may blow his cover.

Bbms: HMSHood: Two very interesting points you raise here (imo).

It takes $$$, good equipment, skill, settings, staging, and post production, to publish photos to a website. I think he had coaching.

I read somewhere the website was designed to hide the identity but not the message. This ties in to some sort of cover.

As an aside, I agree with the other posters, the photos taken in his bedroom are selfies. He almost seems to be trying on the persona…

Additional thoughts are what happened in the bible study room? - drugged or not, I believe they (the murdered 9) may have focused the entire hour on this evil child before he did the unthinkable.

Understanding exactly what happened is a long way off, as I am sure the details are unknown and under intense investigation on both sides of this tragedy.

The indoor pictures, yes. The outdoor pictures look to me like they were taken by another person. It would have been hard for him to take those himself.
Why do you think outdoor photos would be more difficult? It is the same as indoors, except with a flash. He probably had many "takes" prior to uploading them.

The outdoor photos appear so staged - from a photographers point of view, the settings seem almost predetermined. -Did he even know the history? Really? Oh, I have my doubts... I think he had help, support, coaching, locations, staging, lighting, and a like-minded group (of hate) behind him... And, I think the subsequent events that transpired were rapid fire, ie: impulsive vs. well thought out. I don't think this kid was knowledgeable enough to create this narrative (by himself). --imo... just a hunch...

Yes, he researched the church, and the bible study group but what beyond that?

With respect, these days it sometimes takes only a push of a button to publish photos to a website. I publish & maintain a personal website and I can upload a photo to it without (believe me!) any special coaching, training or ability. Plus, given smart phones, selfie sticks and time-delay photo apps on all digital media, no one needs friends to take staged photos. This digital age is a great equalizer.
