Lawyers for Alex Murdaugh requested a new trial Tuesday in an explosive motion filed in Columbia, South Carolina, that alleges that the court clerk tampered with jurors so she could secure a book deal.

Colleton County Court Clerk Rebecca Hill penned the memoir "Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders," which hit bookstores Aug. 1.


Hill pressured jurors to "reach a quick verdict" and had "frequent private conversations with the jury foreperson" to sway the panel toward a guilty verdict, attorneys Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin wrote in the filing.

"Ms. Hill did these things to secure for herself a book deal and media appearances that would not happen in the event of a mistrial," the filing says. "Ms. Hill betrayed her oath of office for money and fame."

'He thought that Becky Hill was a friend of his. He has known her while he was practicing law.'

Citing claims that Griffin told jurors 'not to be fooled' by the defense's case and that she warned jurors to 'watch [Murdaugh] closely', Griffin said: 'These revelations that the jury had sworn to, the jurors, completely caught him off guard.

'And frankly, [it] has caught us off guard.'

Griffin went on to hint how he and his partner - a member of the South Carolina Senate - had become aware of the clerk's alleged behavior, which he claimed he had began to hear rumblings of shortly after the double-murder wrapped.

A status conference has been scheduled in Beaufort County General Sessions Court beginning 9 a.m. Thursday and will include Murdaugh, former Beaufort attorney Cory H. Fleming, and former Hampton bank CEO Russell L. Laffitte.

Fleming will be sentenced for his state crimes, and it's possible that court dates may be set to try Murdaugh and Laffitte for their alleged state financial crimes.

This criminal reunion was ordered by Judge Newman, who is presiding over all of the S.C. State Grand Jury cases involving Murdaugh's more than 100 financial and drug-related crimes, and who sentenced Murdaugh to two life sentences for murdering his wife and child - but the guest of "honor" is expected to be Murdaugh himself, who has not been seen publicly since March 3.
