Valerie Bauerlein — The Devil at His Elbow: Alex Murdaugh and the Fall of a Southern Dynasty

During a book signing at Politics & Prose Bookstore and Coffeeshop in Washington, D.C., about a year ago, VB answered a question from the crowd about Buster M where she confirmed that Buster did plagiarize from his then girlfriend's (now wife) law paper, and that the money Alec paid to "fixer" Karl "Butch" Bowers was tracible to have a direct link to the funds that were stolen from the Satterfield boys. I'd never heard the background about the plagiarism story before, or how Buster allegedly benefited from Alec's deed.

(This passage is provided on YT at about the 47-min mark).

That's intriguing - I never knew he cribbed off his own girlfriend's (now wife's) paper. Was it with her knowledge? If so, why didn't she get penalized as well? If not, why would an aspiring attorney stay with someone who'd do that?

Fortunately, AM has no legal right to appear at the oral argument before the South Carolina Supreme Court on Feb 11, 2026! Perhaps he will be allowed to view a replay of the live stream (with his visiting attorney). The livestream will be available for the public. (See Supreme Court of NC YT channel link below).

Unless his defense is able to convince the panel that his conviction should be tossed, chief among them that they allege there was jury tampering by the former clerk of court for Colleton County, and/or that Judge Newman improperly allowed the state to make the case that Murdaugh's ongoing financial crimes were a motive in the killings, AM should never see beyond his prison walls ever again. IMO, AM made himself comfortable there long ago, and he's exactly where he should be.

The Supreme Court of North Carolina is the state’s highest court, and there is no further appeal from its decisions on matters of state law. It is made up of the Chief Justice, who also serves as head of the Judicial Branch, and six associate justices.

She totally should have received jail.

This is a really dishonest framing of the issue by FITSNews. First of all, the SAO decides who gets prosecuted and for what. Not the judge. In this case, the SAO has an interest in protecting the guilty verdict so they are not going to initiate a prosecution for jury tampering. Yes, one juror did say she was influenced but she also indicated that her verdict was not influenced if I'm remembering correctly. She gave a mixed response. I don't think the SAO should throw away a verdict by charging jury tampering based off of one wishy washy juror.

After that hearing with all the jurors, the judge concluded there was no jury tampering.

Therefore, what the judge and prosecutors said in Becky's hearing is not "bizarre" or at "odds with the record." It is FACTUALLY correct.

Appellate hearing tomorrow morning.

The South Carolina Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Alex Murdaugh’s appeal starting around 9:30 a.m. in Columbia.

The Court has issued time limits for the oral arguments.

According to a court order, attorneys for Murdaugh and the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office will each have a total of 40 minutes to present their cases. That time will be divided, with each side given 20 minutes for arguments on the alleged jury tampering issue and 20 minutes each for arguments on alleged errors in the 2023 trial.

Murdaugh’s attorneys will then have 10 minutes for a combined reply to the state’s arguments.
Justices will likely interject throughout Wednesday’s hearing to ask questions or seek clarification as they review the legal arguments made in court and the many court filings already submitted by both sides.

Murdaugh will not attend the oral arguments, a spokesperson for his legal team told CNN. Attorneys Dick Harpootlian, Jim Griffin and Phillip Barber will all return to argue for Murdaugh.

Senior Assistant Deputy Attorney General Creighton Waters, who led the prosecution, will once again make the state’s argument. Attorney General Alan Wilson – who is running for governor in the Republican primary – will be seated with Waters at the counsel table, court filings show.

Wednesday’s hearing will be open to the public on a “first come, first served” basis. It will also be livestreamed.
